It s a bit crazy with all the commercial flights; however, they have 68 general aviation single engine aircraft, 24 multi-engine aircraft, 67 jets and only 2 helicopters. At Lunken I met with one of the city planners attached to the Department of Transportation and Engineering, Aviation Division. We reviewed current and future plans for the airport discussing many topics mostly on how we can participate in promoting general aviation and potential future events. The aircraft on site inclue 151 single engine aircraft, 33 multi-engine aircraft, 47 jets, and 6 helicopters. 174 Fly Out Season is Here If you ve got them, fly them! Stay tuned for the latest about our chapter fly outs listed in this newsletter. Next event: Saturday, May 15 - Sporty's Fly In (and International Learn to Fly Day!) Our display area is a six-foot table. Our mission is to promote aviation and explain what it is we do as an EAA chapter; encourage attendees to consider membership, and promote our upcoming events (especially the Young Eagles event). Sporty s Fly In Schedule Saturday, May 15 at 8:00 am Starting at 8 am we can set up our exhibit or add final touches. 10 am to 3 pm our booth should be staffed, we can use additional volunteers. Complimentary hot dogs will be served for lunch. Sodas and snacks will be available for sale. This is a BIG EVENT lets show our support for I69 and Sporty s with our attendance. There will be many vendors and a lot of aviation stuff, you won t want to miss this one! Thank You Big thanks to the member volunteers participating in the Lunken Day s event: Kathy Doyle, Lee Jewel, Ted & Maryann Fichesser, David Glassmeyer, Gary Collins, Fred Williams, Mark Webb, Kevin Kinney, and Eric Laing. Weather was not the best; however, the event was successful especially for the upcoming Young Eagles event We currently have approximately 50 Young Eagles signed up. Another Part of Our Mission Continue to invite friends relatives or acquaintances to any of our chapter meetings or events and share your passion for aviation. I look forward to seeing everyone at our next chapter meeting on Wednesday, May 19th at 7:00 p.m. at the Hawk Building. Remember: For the summer we ve moved the regular chapter meetings to Wednesday nights. We hope this time is more convenient for folks to join us. As always~fly safe. Chapter Dues Still Needed Several members still need to pay their 2010 chapter dues. Please pay Phil Cady as soon as possible. Feel free to see Phil at the chapter meeting on Wednesday evening, or, as always you can mail your check to: Phil Cady 3071 Sarsi Road Sardinia, OH (make checks payable to : EAA 174)

3 TALESPINNERS CHAPTER 174 Page 3 Young Eagles Rally 2010 by Eric Laing, Young Eagles Coordinator Our annual Young Eagle Rally is quickly approaching and we need volunteers for the June 12 th event. Last year, we flew 125 Young Eagles. We currently have 70 Young Eagles preregistered, which is approximately 2.5 times as many as were pre -registered at this time last year, so this is shaping up to be a well attended event. We need approximately 40 volunteers, spread among the following assignments: Pilots As always, we need as many pilots that can volunteer their time and aircraft. Pilot briefing will be held at 8 a.m. on June 12 th at the Hawk Building. Flightline Crew With a single runway, small ramp space, and limited taxiways, we need volunteers with experience working around aircraft. These folks will be directing aircraft movements to keep our Rally operating efficiently, while also keeping an eye out to ensure the safety of the operation. The Flightline Crew briefing will be held at 7:45 a.m. on June 12 th at the Hawk Building. Ground Crew These are the folks that get the Young Eagles to their aircraft and back safely. They also handle the plethora of paperwork required for each flight. We re looking for volunteers that won t mind being on their feet most of the morning and can be depended upon to keep operations moving smoothly. The Ground Crew briefing will be held at 7:45 a.m. on June 12 th at the Hawk Building. Registration and dispatch Not the most glamorous job, but at least you re guaranteed a seat in the Hawk Building. In addition to checking the registration forms for completeness and assigning Young Eagles to flights, the registration and dispatch team also handles the Young Eagles flight certificate and log books. Over the next few weeks, I ll be contacting you to ask if you can volunteer for our Young Eagles Rally and in what capacity you d like to help out. If you have any questions, comments, or would like to let me know what role you ll be volunteering in, please call ( ) or (eric_laing2@yahoo.com) me. Happiness is a Young Eagle flight in a beautiful Citabria Young Eagle Flights with Sporty s The very first Young Eagles flight coordinated with Sporty s was held on March 27 th. Pilots Scott Hersha John Zimmerman, and Dennis Wolter flew six Young Eagles following a briefing on Sporty s Next Step program by Mike Wolf. The Next Step program provides Young Eagles with access to Sporty s online ground school course. Chapter 174 plans to conduct monthly Young Eagles flights in conjunction with support from Sporty s, as long as the weather cooperates. The April 24 th event was rained out, rescheduled for May 1 st and rained out again. Nevertheless, future Young Eagle events are planned for the fourth Saturday of each month. Scott Hersha explains the finer points of flying to his Young Eagle. The smiles of two happy Young Eagles attest to the success of their pilot, John Zimmerman Young Eagles listen as Dennis Wolter goes over his preflight routine with them

4 TALESPINNERS CHAPTER 174 Page 4 Sun-N-Fun 2010 The faded sign said, "the telephone line is down, no gas available". What a bummer for the first and, hopefully, the only gas stop on the way to S-n-F. Dave Glassmeyer and I had just arrived in Madison, GA, in 3hours and 5 minutes. Madison is almost exactly half way to Lakeland and had gas for $3.79 per gallon according to AirNav. Even though there was no fuel, there was a nice building with the necessary facilities, some vending machines, etc. We ate a sandwich and studied the map for the nearest airport on our way south. I flew slowly, at about 50% power to stretch the remaining fuel, to Baldwin County airport near Milledgeville, GA. I knew it was going to be a bite when the attendant said "We got a new load of fuel last week." We paid $5.05 per gallon for 30 gallons and went on our way a little lighter in the wallet. Mark Webb and Don Bilbry were flying down by Delta and I was hoping to beat them there with a light tailwind and one stop but it was not to be now that we had made the extra stop for fuel. Except for the fuel issue this was the second fastest and perhaps the best weather I have ever had on the way to S-n-F. If we had been able to get fuel at Madison as planned the trip would have taken just less than 6 hours and 30 minutes. But with the extra stop it came to just under seven hours total flying time and we got into Lakeland about 4 o'clock. Mark met Mike Logan many years ago when both were building KitFox planes. Mike flew his family airplane, a Grumman Traveler in from eastern Virginia. He had had a direct tailwind and got there first. One of the benefits of flying an antique/classic airplane is parking. I always park with a whole row of Cessna 170s near the east end of the main vendor area and usually camp by the airplane. Mike and Mark figured out last year that there were benefits to camping in the woods--protection from wind, sun and rain and since we got there on Saturday before the show begins on Tuesday, we had no trouble finding a good spot in the woods. The problem is we are in Florida and the ground is covered with all sorts of fast growing things. Mike, Mark and Don worked hard to clear a spot for our camp, put up their tents and a fly to protect our breakfast table and stove before we got there. When Dave and I arrived, they put up our tents while we tied the plane down and got out the table and stove and chairs etc. It was a fine camp, and we had great weather. It was about 80 in daytime and 60 at night. No rain. It was the best S-n-F ever for me. We all volunteer as the Gopher Team for the Workshops. We worked hard Sunday, Monday and Tuesday getting all the various workshops set up. Hauling tables, extension cords, fire extinguishers, welding tables, etc. After that it is more the routine of getting drinks and sandwiches for the instructors, keeping the coffee pots full and directing S-n-F attendees to where they want to go. Mike uses the golf cart to help folks get to their cars after the air show especially after a big attraction like the Thunderbirds. They often do not know where in the huge field they parked but they do know their rental car is white! The question "What time did you get here" does help him get to the approximate area. Arrivals were slow Tuesday and Wednesday but then it really picked up Thursday and by Friday evening it was close to normal. Some vendors did not come. Sonex was not there. But Cessna, Piper, Cirrus, Beech, Mooney and others had large displays. Most everyone that looked closely at the Cessna Skycatcher was surprised at the lack of an interior--not even a partition (just a cargo net) to separate the cabin from the tailcone, and the strange control "handle". I heard more than one say "Why would they do that?" On the other hand (excepting price), everyone seemed impressed with the Piper light sport. When the Light Sport idea was being considered maybe ten years ago, Dick VanGrunsven asked for input on what it should be. I told him it should be a high wing plane with large doors making it easy to get into and out of for the older folks that would probably be the likely buyers. Cessna must have intercepted my letter as the Skycatcher comes close. But a new Italian import comes even closer. See attached photos of the Rampage sold by Skykits. However it will not be a kit. The wing is just too complex. It has double slotted flaps and leading edge slats that deploy together reducing the stall speed from 51 mph to 32 mph. The wing is tapered in plan form and thickness. The Rampage is all metal. It was so new that I got 3 different prices but eventually a sign appeared in the window listing the base price as $84,995. It is powered by the Rotax 100 hp engine used on most light sports. There were several antiques of interest to me. See photos. Pitcairn Autogyro that was flown to Lakeland from Urbana.
