1 Regular Monthly Meeting Colonial Pancake House Family Restaurant, directly across the road from the airport. This month s membership meeting and election of officers for 2015 will be held at Copperfield s on Thursday, January 22nd at 6:00 p.m. Please try to be on time because we would like to have the food orders taken at 6:30 and the meeting started at 7:30 for those not having dinner. We ll gather at Penn Airways at 1000 for 1030 takeoff. Bring a friend or bring a student pilot (or a friend who is a student pilot), or maybe someone who may be a candidate for membership. Contact Gene Poppel at or genepoppel@comcast.net if you want a ride or have an available seat in your plane. Call Mike ( or ) and let us know how many are coming to make sure we have enough seats for everyone. Flyout BRUNCH IN COAL COUNTRY It s hard to imagine now, but until the 1950s Anthracite, or hard coal, was the principal home heating fuel in the east. Much of it came from northeastern Pennsylvania, with the Wyoming Valley or eastern Susquehanna Valley, forming the heart of the region. The railroads that served this area and carried the coal used locomotives specially designed to burn this cleaner, but slower burning fuel. The heavily industrialized Wyoming Valley was key in the Industrial Revolution, and was even the site of a Revolutionary War battle (unfortunately, a massacre of the American patriots). The major city in the area is WilkesBarre, served by two airports the large, towered Wilkes-Barre Scranton International (KAVP) at Avoca and the smaller, friendlier Wyoming Valley (KWBW) at Forty Fort. It s the latter that is our destination for the January 25 flyout. From the Prez It has been hard for me to decide what I should write about for my last Newsletter column as President of the Pottstown Owners and Pilots Association, Inc.. I have my ambitions for to continue to outreach to the aviation community and grow. I have my personal desire to see the improvements and use of the Roost as the center of aviation social and educational opportunities, yes including our steak dinners. I have my wishes that the membership will keep the ball rolling on improvements to the Roost and expanded use for the area scouts and students including the campouts. Our 65 nm journey will take us over the heart of the Anthracite-laden mountains, including the now filled-in strip mining that devastated the peaks and ridges. We ll get a look at a large wind farm, too, one of today s cleaner energy sources. Brunch will be at the President: President: Secretary: Ethel Bailey, Vice Randall J. Dotterer, Dennis Galvin, Joseph Horvath,Treasurer: Michael Sehl, George Yarzabek, Open Position Gene Poppel, Anthony Puco,
2 But, then I picked up the January 2015, Volume 31, Issue 6 copy of the Aviation Digest. On it s cover was a drawing of a proposed electric 2 person General Aviation Trainer. Right now it is referred to as the Airbus E-Fan 2.0 Electric Aircraft. Can you imagine a twin ducted fan whisper quiet 2 person airplane that is state of the art construction, sleek and slick. The article went on to state that Daher Socata announced the signature with Airbus Group s VoltAir subsidiary for design, development and certification of E-Fan 2.0 the world s first all electric series production aircraft. I want one. On the other side of the world, in China, Mooney announces the line up of planes with Diesel Engines. That s right Mooney the Chinese Aviation Company. It must make life exciting for Piper and Cessna. They still make Archers and 172 s. Cessna abandoned it s Chinese built low end entry. Piper and it s Czech counterpart fell out of bed and the LSA imported as a Piper ceased. Where is the innovation, well there is Cirrus. A visit to Oshkosh and you will see new developments from around the world. My introduction to flying was in a Piper Cub out of a grass strip on Delsea Drive in Vineland New Jersey in about My favorite airplane to fly out of the rental fleet at PTW was a Cherokee 140, or was it the Beech Sierra. Sue and I flew the Cherokee to Penn Yan for a fall wine tasting weekend. I flew the Sierra to Morgantown West Virginia and back solo, and then it was taken out of the rental fleet. In between all those were the fleet 172 s and 152 s. Fast, you will notice there has been nothing fast in all those planes, just normal traditional General Aviation. So, I can get excited about new developments in aviation. Like most of us, I just like to get in the air and fly. Isn t it just the greatest thing to be able to do. I went up recently and flew a triangle to New Garden, landed and took off for Smoketown. I had a slice of pizza at Gabriella s Pizza, then headed back to PTW. I had three very good landings, stayed low and flew the Archer at full rpm s in all three legs. I told Suzanne, I was out honing my craft. The bottom line to all this rambling is that what it all comes down to is that we are all involved in because we love aviation, or we love to fly. And thanks to Madison and Jefferson we are guaranteed our right to travel across this great country. We need to spread the word, expand the education and introduce aviation to those who haven t experienced it. I will miss my time as President of, and I thank all of those who have supported our organization during the past three years. Enjoy your flying and be safe. Mike. 2
