3 CELEBRATING 13 years of Art Deco Festivals in Ranfurly Friday the 23rd - Sunday the 25th of February 2013 Get a group of friends together and come, escape to Ranfurly and join us to celebrate our heritage. Ranfurly s successful Art Deco Festival is now in its 13 th year. The Festival celebrates the art deco building style that is prevalent throughout our small rural town with a weekend of fun. It commences on Friday night with a cabaret followed by a street party on Saturday that includes live entertainment, street performances, fashion parade, classic cars, games of the era, market stalls and much more. The Festival has a strong following from those who have an interest in the Art Deco era with visitors coming from all parts of New Zealand and as far away as Australia & England. The Festival is also well supported by our community who have a sense of pride in showcasing our town and area to visitors. The numbers participating in the Festival swell each year with the influx of competitors and supporters involved in the Duathlon (running & cycling) on the famous Otago Central Rail Trail (the competition finishes for the day in Ranfurly around mid afternoon). From The Editor This is a photo of a Rover Gas Turbine on display at Southward Museum, Paraparaumu. I saw through the Museum last month and I plan to include photos of the many Rovers and other interesting displays in future editions of the newsletter. I would recommend a look through this fabulous Museum which is a credit to Sir Len Southward who began collecting cars in The sign in the photo reads as follows England Rover Gas Turbine Type 2 S/150 This Turbine was a development of the production unit fitted to the Rover Turbine Saloon T4 model styled along the lines of the Rover The Le Mans Rover-BRM driver by Graham Hill and Richie Ginther finished 7th in the 1963 race covering a distance of 2592 miles at an average speed of KPH (108MPH) Temperatures of 2200deg C are reached in the burner while the turbine wheels revolve at around 50,000 RPM. Friday 22nd Feb The Art Deco Cabaret / Deco Dance at Maniototo Stadium (7.30pm) is a wonderful evening of dancing, food & wine. Tickets are limited and will be for sale from December. $45pp includes a delicious supper. Saturday 23rd Feb Relax and be entertained at our street festival continuous music, market stalls, vintage cars and much more. Entry is $5 for adults and gold coin for kids (under 16). 14 Enjoy fabulous food & wine, fashion, classic car parade and street entertainers. Explore a variety of markets at the Saturday street festival including local and visiting displays. This iconic Maniototo event is for the whole family as well as Art Deco enthusiasts. Kids entertainment includes Treasure Hunt, Noddy Train, Face Painting and Colouring Competitions. The day culminates with our evening entertainment in the main street from 5-8pm. Suitable for all ages. Sunday 24th Feb Enjoy an Art Deco themed church service on the Ranfurly Railway Station Green on Sunday morning. February Rove, Saturday the 2nd of February. Leave from Performance Cars, Kaikorai Valley Rd at 1.30pm. Drive for approx 1hr to meet at the foreshore in Waihola. Then another drive for a picnic afternoon tea. Newsletters from Australia, Canterbury and Nelson clubs. GENERAL It was suggested that the first meeting of 2013 take the form of a club outing on Saturday 2nd of February. Dunedin participants leaving from outside Performance Cars in Kaikorai Valley Rd. at around 1.30pm, and meeting up with members from the South at the Waihola foreshore at 2pm. Then, if the weather is O.K, continue to the final destination. (To be advised), possibly Milton or Balclutha via Taieri Mouth. The meeting closed at 7.55pm. NEXT MEETING See Above. 5 Batmobile Going Under The Hammer IGNITION. December 2012 Hi All, last Ignition for the year. I had a successful BBQ, despite the rain, at my place, only 3 car club members attended. We discussed at the last meeting our first function in the New Year. As the first Wednesday in February is due to fall on Waitangi Day, so instead of the Wednesday night meeting at the Staff Club, we have a short rally, with picnic lunch on the Saturday. Glenice & Eleanore have plans underway with more to come in the Mag. We are looking at inviting the Land Rover Club & Triumph Stag Club. The original Batmobile from the 1960s TV series is being put up for sale for the first time ever. Owner and creator of the iconic car George Barris (who has owned the car for nearly 50 years) will put it up for auction at Barrett-Jackson s Scottsdale collector-car auction on the 19th of January The heavily customised car is based on a 1955 Lincoln Futura concept car. The Batmobile appeared in the Batman TV series that ran from 1966 to Contact Ray if you think of others who may like to join us. I am still looking for more photo & articles to add to the club web page so please give it some thought over these holidays. Still waiting!!! And what of requests to Santa?? 6 The Last P6 One year after the first SD1 rolled off the production line, the last P6 was built on the March The car was a base model P6B with a spare wheel kit from the optional extras range. It has power steering but was never fitted with a radio. In August 1977 the car was moved to the Leyland Historic Vehicle Collection before it was sent to Donington Park. It became part of the British Motor History Heritage Trust Collect in Syon Park in 1980 along with the rest of the collection from Donington.. Its next move was to the Rover owned Studley Castle where it was in storage until Then it went on display at the Heritage Motor Centre at Gaydon for 10 years and then it was sold at the Bonhams sale of Rover owned items. At this time it had travelled only 12,300 miles (19,800km). Rover P6 Club Magazine Editor Mark Gray now owns the car and had a Corgi Vanguard model commissioned of it in 2006 which was released in 2007 to mark the 30th anniversary of the end of production. The car is affectionately called Graham. In the 8 years that I've owned this car it has had: New steering rack, track rod ends and steering column bushes. Braking system rebuild with re-sleeved brake cylinders and a rebuilt servo. Replacement of all suspension bushes with new polycarbonate bushes. New windscreen wiper motor. New bonnet and boot struts. Re-cored radiator, all coolant pipes replaced (originals were starting to perish), new water pump with new Kenlowe electric fan. Recent engine rebuild with new rings, bearings, cylinder head strip down and uprated gaskets. New rear springs and dampers (original ride height with heavy duty dampers). Replacement of original Lucas ECU with fully programmed Link Storm ECU controlling fuel injection and ignition system. Don't forget Early Bird registrations close on 31 January We can post out a pack to anyone who doesn't have - just let me know Thanks Gary Corbett Secretary Rover Car Club of Auckland 2013 ARCC Rally, Auckland The Air Force Pilot During a commercial airline flight an experienced Air Force Pilot was seated next to a young mother with a baby in her arms. When the baby began crying during the descent for landing, the mother began nursing the infant as discreetly as possible. The pilot pretended not to notice, and, upon disembarking, he gallantly offered his assistance to help with the various baby-related items. When the young mother expressed her gratitude, the pilot responded, "Gosh, that's a good looking baby, and he sure was hungry!" Somewhat embarrassed, the mother explained that her paediatrician said that the time spent on the breast would help alleviate the pressure in the baby's ears. 10 The Air Force Pilot sadly shook his head, and in true pilot fashion exclaimed, "And all these years, I've been chewing gum." 7
