The auto makers were installing black boxes in four-wheel drive pickup trucks in an effort to determine, in fatal accidents, the circumstances in the last 15 seconds before the crash. They were surprised to find in 47 of the 50 states the last words of drivers in 61.2 percent of fatal crashes were, "Oh, Shit!" Only the states of South Carolina, West Virginia and Arkansas were different, where over 89.3 percent of the final words were: "Hold my beer and watch this!" 5 This Is What I Call Going Out In Style... IGNITION. May A wet and windy winter is starting to appear as I write this months Ignition, a bit colder than our recent last 18 days in Sydney. We managed Sydney harbour fishing, swimming and relaxing in the sun. Still the start of winter is almost upon us. While over in Aus it was pleasing to see a pristine black Rover P5B saloon parked on the main road at Edgecliffe alongside the BMW's, Audi's and Mercedes. Following May's Club meeting we now have a Rove to the Best of British Timaru for the 5 th June (Queens Birthday ) weekend. To date we have seven cars on the list. A restaurant dinner on Saturday night is booked but accommodation arrangements are your own. P5 Hearse With the Christchurch earthquake in mind, accommodation is scarce in these days. A programme is being finalised for our June meeting. Briefly, a 8am start at the Gardens, picnic morning tea in Oamaru, a picnic lunch somewhere on the way with a visit somewhere envisaged then to your Timaru accommodation. An evening meal together at Bennies Again Restaurant completes the day. The Best of British Timaru Rally on the Sunday. Should be a great weekend! Ray or myself if you are thinking of joining the Rove to Timaru, but remember accommodation can be a problem. The Nove Rove and Use It Day are in the pipeline for later this year. The Coupe has a new wof and is all ready for Timaru and Carleen and I are looking forward to taking part in this one this year. Rover 75 Connoisseur 2.5 V6 Norman & Carleen S. President. 6 ROVER CAR CLUB of OTAGO MINUTES of the Annual General Meeting of Otago/Southland Division of The ASSOCIATION OF ROVER CAR CLUBS INCORPORATED, held in the University Staff Club, Union St East, Dunedin, on the 6 th April PRESENT Walton Brown; Diana Kearns; Alastair McInnes; John Moore; Jeff Sparrow; Norman Sparrow APOLOGIES Ross Allan, Bernie Halford, Ray Pilley, Ian & Eleanore Clark, Jo & Glenice Smith MINUTES OF 2010 ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING Agreed that the minutes as circulated, be confirmed SECRETARY S` REPORT Agreed that the report as circulated be received. FINANCIAL REPORT Agreed that the report as circulated be received. ELECTION OF OFFICERS National Secretary agreed that Chris Clark continue in office Assistant Secretary no nomination received GENERAL BUSINESS National Rallies We are unable to comment on why local club members do not attend rallies in their own district We look forward to next years rally in Canterbury, and our members will be supporting this event. As for 2013, it is up to the North Island Clubs to get together and design a rally that will be supported by the membership, and be a success. Closure The meeting closed at 8pm Norman Sparrow President Alastair McInnes Secretary/Treasurer Dunedin EASTER RALLY??????? In mid February Steph and I decided we would attend the Rotorua ARCC Rally. After checking with rally organisers that it was still on, we went ahead and booked our flights to and from Rotorua. Some very short weeks later, the rally became doubtful, then cancelled. Unable to get our money back for our flights, we decided to make it a holiday and head up north to visit Steph s Whanua in Auckland and Whangarei. We managed to catch up on our Otago Club member Stephen Buckley, who lives in Auckland. Our meeting place was decided on being George and Michael s (Auckland Rover Club members) home, as we wanted to catch up on them also. I knew George had quite a selection of Rover memorabilia and I was hoping to have a wee peek at what he s got; I wasn t disappointed. I was like a little boy in a toy museum, lots of things I d like, but nothing for sale. It s great to see I m not the only Rover nut that collects all sorts of memorabilia. Of course it wasn t all nic nac s. In sheds, car ports and on the lawn is a fine collection of real Rovers. He has10 s, P3,4, 5, 6, 800 coupe, 75 and a Range Rover. A dozen or 15 in total, many waiting there turn for restoration. Michael kept Steph entertained with his collection of many old gramophones and antiques. George cooked up a lovely meal for us all. By this time numbers had swelled with more friends and club members arriving. We had a very enjoyable evening catching up on Rover club friends. I ll have to catch Stephen at his home next trip north so I can peek at all his Rover goodies. Bernie 6 11
7 Who says we are not sensitive? The class was in full swing. The room was full of pregnant women with their husbands. The instructor was teaching the women how to breathe properly and was telling the men how to give the necessary assurance to their wives at this stage of the pregnancy. She said "Ladies, remember that exercise is good for you. Walking is especially beneficial. It strengthens the pelvic muscles and will make delivery that much easier. Just take several stops and stay on a soft surface like grass or a path." She looked at the men in the room, "and Gentlemen, remember -- You're in this together -- It wouldn't hurt you to go walking with her". The room suddenly got very quiet as the men absorbed this information. Then a man at the back of the room slowly raised his hand. "Yes", answered the Instructor. "I was just wondering if it would be all right if she... carries a golf bag while we walk? Graber P3 75 This P3 convertible special was built by Herman Graber in Switzerland in 1948 and it was exhibited at the 1949 Geneva Motor Show. It left Switzerland for France in 1953 and was eventually taken to England in It is the only special bodied P3 ever made. 8 8 ASSOCIATION OF ROVER CAR CLUBS OF NEW ZEALAND Rover Car Club Nelson (Inc) April 2011 P.O.Box 2170, Stoke NELSON 7041 NEWSLETTER NUMBER THREE. APPROVAL OF 2010 BALANCE SHEET. General acceptance and support noted. Thank you. CLUB REPORTS TO THE AGM. I enclose copies from most, to keep you informed of activities around NZ NATIONAL SECRETARY & ASSISTANT. The Auckland Club has requested a postal election so nominations for both positions signed by proposer and seconder and nominated member are to be in my hands by 22 nd May with an election to follow during June. The Constitution suggests one position to be a South Island member and the other North as at present. Note also that David Raven is available only as Assistant Secretary at this point in time. UPDATE OF CLUB CONTACTS. Thank you for the changes noted, and if there are further changes, as the year progresses, after AGM Meetings, please remember to notify me LEVY. With the decrease in planned expenditure due to the cancellation of the AGM, we ll be able to stay within budget, so I m sure all Clubs will concur with my recommendation to leave the Levy unchanged for a further year at $2 for membership and $2 for Public Liability Insurance. WEBSITE. Nothing has been placed for Auckland, Manawatu or Wellington. If it would help, there is absolutely no reason why information on an existing website, cannot be simply transferred to the new (now 6 months old) ARCC site. It would be so nice to have it all complete! Or if that doesn t suit why not just put up your list of office bearers with a link to your own site, just so that the public know something is there! All of us place notice of Coming Events in our Newsletters so why not add it to our web page? Remember, also, all Clubs voted support for an ARCC Website 12 months ago at Dunedin! 2012 NATIONAL RALLY. The word is that Canterbury s planning for the Rally is under way and they will release details as they work beyond the awful experience they are coping with. The experienced team they have will, I m sure, cope with the challenges. Ashburton is the venue, but that s all I know at present. YOUR VIEWS. All Clubs have expressed surprise that there has been such a poor response to North Island Rallies, in particular the lack of entries from members living only a short drive from the venue. The question of promoting Rallies every second year has arisen again, as with the prospect of changing to a different weekend. The problem with a shorter weekend, is the fact that if you want to attend from a distance, the extra days at Easter are necessary to travel to and from the venue. Is this a hidden intimation that the whole concept of National Rally is losing desirability? Some remarked that they would like to see less judging/navigation, more time to socialise perhaps even to the extent of having only a People s Choice. There also seems to be a marked difference in aspirations, between the North and South. Is the answer to do as the Jaguar Club, and stage a Rally every third year with local meetings in between? At present, the intention is to support Canterbury as host for 2012, and discuss at that AGM, what the future plan will be for Rallies and especially as regards the North. I would welcome feedback on this, especially as some of the above could be controversial, so let me have your thoughts so we can make for constructive discussion over the next 12 months. I enclose suggestions from the Auckland Club and the Easter gathering in Waikato as starting points. Kind regards, Chris Clark. ARCC National Secretary. 9
