3 From The Editor About 6 years ago I bought a Gold 1986 Rover SD1 Vanden Plas. It was running at the time and we driving around in it for a while, but the interior needed (and still needs) work. I was then given a Silver Rover SD1 SE, not running. but the interior was in way better nick. I had every intention of making one good car out of the two, and turning the other one into a track car. Finances; and now time, have dictated that I have not been able to bring this to fruition. I am writing in the hope that maybe the club, or someone in the club; might be interested in buying the vehicles from me. If anyone is interested, or would like more information about the cars. Contact me on (07) or (027) Regards John Hill Club Subscriptions. If you have not paid your annual subs by the end of this month, this will be the last newsletter you receive and you will be taken off the club membership list ARCC Rally in Auckland. I have an copy of the registration pack for the 2013 ARCC Rally in Auckland. Contact me if you want me to forward it on to you. Moved by M Tapp, Seconded by R Pilley. Motion Carried A brief discussion followed on possible suitable venues for next years Best of British. Several suggestions were made but the result was somewhat inconclusive. The first meeting of 2013 is to be on the first Saturday in February, and will incorporate a barbecue or similar. Details will be decided at the December club meeting. Club members are invited to a barbecue at Jeff's place (90D Carroll St.) on Sat. 1st of December from 2pm onwards. Photos of the 2012 Nove Rove will be put on the club web page. The meeting closed at 8.05pm. The next meeting will be held on Wednesday 5th December at the University Staff Club at 7pm. through Woodside, then around the back of the airport at Momona, to the railway crossing at Henley, which is where all four routes finally converged. Across SH1, through old Henley township and over the historic bridge, where the river was running brisk and high. We joined SH1 to Waihola, the day being fine and warm, well as long as you were behind glass! We continued on to Milton, turning left and traversing suburban streets. I m not sure if this was to give the local residents a thrill, or just to wind them up! Back on SH1 we took the left turn to Kaitangata, passing Lake Tuakitoto on the right, what a lovely country drive this is. After Kaitangata we drove beside the Clutha River, on to Stirling and back to Milton, passing the historic Alliance Textile Woollen Mill, before stopping at the VCC Checkpoint. We recorded our mileage and handed in our instruction sheets, before being directed to parking for our lunch stop at the Milton swimming pool complex. Here we had a chance to admire and appreciate the many different cars that were part of this Taieri Tour, and make a selection for the People s Choice Award. The swimming complex was closed so we sat beside our cars to enjoy lunch, it was a lovely day after all! Halfway through my filled roll, my mug of hot tea quickly became iced tea, as the heavens opened up and delivered a short rain of hail. Winter obviously, was not prepared to concede defeat just yet! After lunch it was time for the field tests, which required each navigator to toss quoits onto a post, and then several balls of different sizes into a bucket. Not as easy as it appears, especially as the sun had come out by now and did its best to dazzle everyone taking part obstacle No 3. By now it was getting close to the start of the afternoon run. I thought it prudent to visit the gents before setting off, but where is it? The swimming complex was closed so it was necessary to make your way some distance across the reserve to the camp ground facilities. Halfway there you encountered a section of wet slippery mud, which curtailed one s progress considerably! Not good with a full bladder obstacle No4. After receiving our afternoon instruction sheets we departed Milton, heading north at around 3-00pm. The sheet advised a little of the history of Milton, which was originally known as Mill Town. Of course there were mills here, including a woollen mill, flour mill and timber mill. Heading north we passed the latest industries of McLay Boats, Calder Stewart Industries and City Forrest's Mill, not to mention the Milton Hilton, where, they tell me, the three ring perimeter fence is there to keep intruders out, not the inmates, or shall we say guests, in. We passed a little green building, which I have always thought was a little small to be a house, even an early settler house. Our instruction sheet advised that this building was the Toll House, when in the early days of motoring, this part of what is now SH1 was a Toll Road, and County Tolls were charged and collected here. Continuing north, we passed through Waihola, on towards Henley and turning left at the first airport sign. From here onwards we were given cryptic clues to follow the correct roads to our destination and finish of the rally back at J-Tees Conference Centre. Most vehicles arrived by 4-30pm, and liquid refreshments flowed while the organisers tallied up the official results. Prize giving followed, prior to dinner being served around 6-00pm. What a great day we had and a truly fantastic rally. A big thank you to George and Marjory Martin, and the many other members that made it all happen. 13

5 12 40 th ANNUAL TAIERI TOUR Saturday 3 rd November, By Kevin Phillips Early November, and the weather will be perfect for the highlight of the Otago Branch calendar year! Wrong! Friday 2 nd November, a nasty storm is brewing south west of the country. The huge cruise ship Sun Princess, has opted to race north from Akaroa, instead of risking the entrance to Port Chalmers, the second cruise ship of four to take this action. In Dunedin, tour operators are drowning out the bagpipes with their wailing! Friday evening, and the Rover is all set to go for the 40 th Annual Taieri Tour. The rain came down and the wind blew, and I thought, this is going to be a fizzer unless it blows itself out over night. Saturday morning arrived with bright sunlight penetrating the curtains. A look outside revealed a good dusting of snow on the Maungatua's, but otherwise fine and sunny, no wonder the heat pump had been working overtime! I fired up the Rover, then went inside to lock up. Jenny jumped in the driver s seat obstacle No 1. We headed into Dunedin with more snow on the hills, meeting at Memorial Courts on Victoria Road. Here, we were joined by about fifty other vehicles, a very good selection, dating from 1912 through to After collecting our instruction sheets we were allowed 10 seconds to study a photograph, of which we would be asked a question later in the tour. On departing the car park we headed to St Kilda, Caversham, Green Island and Fairfield, then took the old road to Mosgiel. Left just before the railway crossing took us along Gladstone Road to a speedo check of one mile or one kilometre, depending on the speedo fitted to your vehicle. It was most reassuring to see that the Rover s speedo was 100% accurate. Stopping at a VCC Checkpoint, we were asked a couple of questions before being directed to our morning tea stop at J-Tees Conference Centre. Here, parking was at a premium with the final entrants just managing to squeeze in. What a lovely venue this is, with great views looking over the Taieri on one side, and the greens of the golf course on the other. After morning tea things became a little more serious. We received our second instruction sheet, which had a No 2 on it, logical, as it was the second instruction sheet! We headed outside and Jenny commented that the lovely big Austin parked next to us had made a quick get-a-way. A bit quicker than we all realised, as it had run backwards into another car pushing it sideways, stopping just inches from a Rolls Royce! Our exit was now blocked obstacle No 2. Both cars were moved to reveal no damage, then we headed out of the car park in the lead. We followed our instructions, left along Riccarton Road, right into School Road, along Puddle Alley then past Taieri Aerodrome. It seemed most strange, there were no cars anywhere near us, surely we can t be that far ahead! Shortly we came across entrants driving in all different directions, so I quickly re-read our instructions, yes, we were most definitely right. I said to Jenny, We re going to win this outright as everybody else has got it wrong! Well that was not to be, we discovered later that there were four different routes, all handed out randomly. I must admit that later it did appeal to my sense of humour, even though we had entrants doing U turns and retracing their steps. We all ended up heading for Outram, then splitting up once again. Jenny and I drove IGNITION. November 2012 We had a moderate attendance at the November Club meeting held downstairs at the University Staff Club. A motion was passed changing the names required for signing cheques from the Club s account. See minutes for other items discussed. The NOVE ROVE was its normal success. A great thanks again to Bernie & Steph. See report & photos in the Mag. Also photos on our web site. Things happening this coming month : I am arranging a BBQ at my place on Saturday 1 st Dec. That is at 90D Carroll Street. Dunedin. Turn by the Bus Depot onto Melville St. and up two blocks. I should have several BBQ units. With Co-Workers from the Uni. & Rover Club members. BYO starting about 2.30pm on a sunny day ** I hope!!! Our last Club meeting for the year will be on the following Wed at the Staff Club, same place & same time as last meeting. We have received details of next years Easter Rally in Auckland. In the Nation Rally 2013 Registration Pack And what of requests to Santa?? Norm still wishing for an operational Red P6 V8 for Xmas. Drive safe out there. President Jeff 5

6 ASSOCIATION OF CAR CLUBS NZ (INC) Association of Rover Car Clubs NZ (Inc) PO Box Dalesford Hamilton Newsletter number five November 2012 Seasonal Greetings to all members. National Rally The ARCC has received the following advice from the Auckland Rover Car Club: 6 The Rally Organising Group have the Itinerary sorted and the Registration pack is all ready to go out. They just want to run it past their Auckland Committee at their next meeting on 7 November before ing it out to all the Rover clubs in NZ, so expect notification of the Rally shortly. Although the Registration pack may be too late for your final newsletters of the year, most of the clubs will have a Christmas event where the details can be discussed. There will be prizes and judging at the Rally. The judging will be "People's Choice" and "Pride of Ownership" type judging rather than the more formal National Rally categories such as "Taranaki Modified" etc. We are looking forward to hosting a friendly, fun rally for Easter Regards Gary Corbett Secretary Rover Car Club of Auckland rovercarclub@gmail.com Parts Wanted. 7 Changes To Vehicle Registration and Licensing Fees from October Following on from a comment from Mel Tapp at the November club meeting regarding the new fee for putting your vehicle licence on hold, I did some research regarding the new fees. If you want to put your vehicle licence on hold (or temporary exemption from continuous licensing, to give it the official name) the fees are as follows. At an NZTA Contact Centre the fee is $ At an NZTA Agent the fee is $5.50. There is good news though. If you go to the following web address, there is no transaction fee. You will need: your New Zealand driver licence a note of your vehicle's plate number if you owe licensing fees, a valid credit card or your internet banking details ARCC Rally It looks like the Auckland Club Rally Committee have their plans well in hand. The last 2 North Island rallies have had their troubles, so let s all get behind this Rally and make it a success. Car Valuation. Has there been any further progress on this from the Clubs? We ve only had a response from Waikato at the moment. Rover Club Website Advertising. The annual hosting fee for the website (currently $229.34) has been paid by my company, if anyone else wants to sponsor the site next year, please let me know so I can arrange the details. Has anyone any comments on the website for ways to improve it. We need to add a Links section anyway, would any other sections be an advantage? Club Levies. A reminder for the club levies that need to be returned to me before Christmas. The following is an excerpt from the NZTA website TEMPORARY EXEMPTION FROM CONTINUOUS LICENSING If you're not going to use your vehicle on the road for at least three months, you can apply for a temporary exemption from the requirement to continually license your vehicle. The maximum exemption period is 12 months, but you can apply for subsequent exemptions. You must apply for an exemption while your licence is still current. The exemption will take effect from when the current licence or existing exemption expires. FOMC and WOFs. The Federation of Motoring Clubs (FOMC) of which the ARCC is a member by virtue of the levy, has been carrying out sterling work on the recent proposal to change the WOF. Despite the somewhat alarming advertising from the MTA wanting to keep the 6 monthly WOF, the feedback that the FOMC received after carrying out a survey was that annual WOFs would be preferred by the Classic Car movement, as the majority of our cars are travelling less than 3,000kms per year. Roy Hughes from the FOMC will keep us informed of events as they unfold. Finally, I d like to wish all members a safe and Merry Christmas and Best Wishes for the New Year. For full detail of the changes to registration and licensing fees, go to this web address. Kind regards, David Raven National Secretary. 10 Ray 7

8 Nove Rove 2012 Well after a stormy weekend being forecast and very wet Friday night, I didn t sleep easy, but the day broke fine and clear. By the time we headed for Milton for our first stop, the sky was looking a bit suspect again. Our visit to McLay boats was very interesting, with some of the lady folk even commenting on what they had seen. The plasma cutter was demonstrated to us and was quite fascinating to see it work. It is quite amazing how a private company in little old Milton has grown to the extent that it now exports many of its boats to Australia and also to new markets in Europe. Even with our high dollar they can compete after shipping their boats to the other side of the world. That s a sure sign of having a great product. On leaving McLay boats, my instructions were that it was just a case of following the lead vehicle to the Clutha River Punt at Tuapeka Mouth and weather permitting, we would stop for lunch on the way. I also handed out basic instructions just in case any one got misplaced. Well, having instructions, who needs a lead vehicle??. I found myself being the 6 th car in the convoy. After driving up to the top of Mt Stuart to view the wind farm, we travelled down into the valley below to eat our lunch in the sun with plenty of shelter and even available toilets. Well 8 cars stopped here for lunch, the 5 lead cars had theirs parked at the Punt in the cold and rain. bugger. This Ford Model TT was on display at the West Otago Vintage Museum The Punt trip didn t go well, the Clutha had a very generous amount of water in it and it seemed to be in a great hurry to get to the sea. On the second crossing, things went a bit pear shaped, with the current beating the punt masters reactions, allowing the main pulley rope to somehow get under one of the Punt hulls. This meant they couldn t control our docking speed and we hit quite hard. Then there was quite a problem getting the rope free. By this time, all the other waiting cars decided to go by road, down to Clydevale and back up the other side of the river. This worked out very well as we were quickly all back together. Only sad thing was some never got to travel the Punt. We then travelled up through Rankleburn to Tapanui, where we visited the local VCC museum. Lots of interesting things to look at here. More back roads took us to Gore in time to relax for a while before our evening get together. 8 The weather was pretty good to us all day, using our wipers only for a couple of very short periods. I had suggested in the lead up to the run that we should dress to the decade of our car for a bit of fun. This saw several couples dress up, some for the days drive and some for the evening get together. The winners for best dressed went to Leo Rose & Leo Hulme and Rosemary Hulme & their from Alexandra and Ross and Veneta Allan of Dunedin, both couples dressed for the 1960 s. This years Nove Rove trophy was won by Bob McBurney of Invercargill, with his lovely P6B. Joe and Glenice Smith from Kaitangata where second with their pretty little 216 Cabriolet. The raffle results, Aidan Smith 1 st, Joe Smith 2 nd, Bernie H 3 rd. Rally funds raised after prize costs was $100. The after match function saw quite a few bodies pack into one motel unit for drinkies and a little light entertainment from Leo playing his ukulele. Sunday morning started with a big hearty cooked breakfast for most, then over the road to the Hokonui Pioneer Park for a wander round all their treasures. This finished off with a nice cup of tea and some home Bob McBurney receives the Nove Rove trophy from Bernie Halford cooking, and then it was time to say our good byes and head for home. Sundays weather was all sunshine but bitter cold with fresh snow on the hills. Another successful Nove Rove, even if I do say so myself. Next years Nove Rove will be in the Oamaru, Timaru direction.
