3 Ignition July 2018 Last Month I attended a nieces wedding in Otaki just north of Wellington. It was a relative short drive in the hire car (Toyota Rav4) from the airport to El Rancho our overnight accommodation near Waikanae beach. It was several years ago now that I last travelled that section of road and in the dark, nothing seemed to have changed. It wasn t until the next day when my brother-in law and I decided to sneak a visit to Southwards Car museum before the wedding that the change revealed itself. We both thought we knew where we were going as the night before separately we both passed the sign to the museum but after travelling down the road for 20 minutes it was apparent something was amiss, we should have been there already, and the Google Lady was of no help what so ever. In our eagerness our mistake was to turn on to the new expressway rather than going through to Waikanae township and turning on to what was the original State Highway 1 we would have been there in 10 minutes. We did get there eventually and had a pleasant look around. Except for development of the conference facility not much had appeared to have changed in the museum or the cars since my first visit 5-6 years ago. Talking of the new expressway, one day when complete it might make travelling that part of the country road network more bearable, but until the Transmission Gully work and remaining sections of expressway are finished, the differing lane widths, changing speed zones and the traffic lights do nothing to help traffic flow. I only hope they have future proofed it enough to handle the ever-increasing number of cars likely on those roads meanwhile back home I ll make the most of the relatively hassle free daily commute between Palmerston and Dunedin. Keep safe Alan President s Report July 21 st 2018 Following our AGM July 22 nd 2017 it s been a productive year for the Club. In September the Club joined the Auto Spectacular at the Edgar Stadium with a display of V8 Rovers, display panels and example of the very first and last V8 production engines to celebrate the 50 th anniversary of the introduction of the Rover V8 engine. The annual Nove Rove on the 4 th & 5 th November attracted 20 members 10 cars. The group started in Dunedin travelling to Palmerston and through to the Strath Taieri. to our overnight stop at Otematata. There were stop-overs at Macraes gold mine, the Naseby Motor Museum, a steep climb over the spectacular Dansey's Pass and on the Sunday a guided tour of the Benmore Dam. Many thanks to Peter Smith and we look forward to what Norman and Carleen Sparrow have lined up for us in November started with a member s barbeque at Bill and Gaynor Falconers crib at Kaka Point. It wasn t the best of days but a great time was held with some of us spending an hour or more looking through the stalls at the market before the barbeque lunch and lots of comradery. The Best of British run to Outram was a great day out well attended by club members and there were lots of cars of different marks from across many different generations and there was recognition and prizes handed out to club members Bill, Ray and Peter. Well done. As is traditional we also helped out the event organisers to get cars away at the start of the event. Continued on page 11

11 President s Report July 21 st 2018 cont. Many members travelled to Methven to join fellow Rover enthusiasts at the annual rally of the Association Of Rover Car Clubs, this year well-hosted by Rover Car Club of Canterbury who with the Landrover Series 1 owners joining in to celebrate 70 years since the introduction of the Landrover. In 2019 the rally is being hosted by the Auckland Rover Car club and there has been the offer to provide - members car to use. Its also important through this report to acknowledge and support the good work of the ARCC to keep us engaged and involved at a national level. The May Memorial Run coincided with one of Dunedin s memorable wet blustery days with a trip down the Otago Peninsula to the University Marine Studies Centre then onto Taiaroa Head Information Centre for cuppa and warm up. It was back to town via Allen s Beach and Hooper s inlet to Peter Smiths house for our pot luck tea Thanks to Peter Smith and as luck would have it Norman and Carleen won the trophy and pleasure of organising our 2019 event. Our monthly meeting during the year continue to be well attended and it is so inspiring to see such a good representation from across our membership, no matter what rain, hail or snow. It would be nice for some of our other members to come along but with such a wide distribution across our region its not practical for some and the support from others who just wish to be members and feel part of our club will always be appreciated. There has been considerable debate about purchasing club memorabilia, but this seems to be a difficult area to resolve. I am sure this will be debated from time to time and new items occasional purchased. However on a positive note there have been some successes - we have purchased two Gazebos with our club insignia club, Business cards which are being distributed to members now and some Hi Viz vests also with club insignia that will be used by any of our club members assisting as Officials at events, our own and others such as Best of British. We are committed to continue to work on improving our club profile which is critical as we move forward. It s fair to say with an aging membership and threat of the convenience of modern day living and so many competing activities we need to be attracting a younger generation both people and Rover cars. Finally a big thanks to Ray Pilley who has done a magnificent job with distributing information, other clubs newsletters, for our minutes, managing our finances and taking the lead for investigating options for purchasing our gazebos and business cards, hi viz vests and the bringing forward suggestions for hats umbrellas and everything else. Thanks to Norman Sparrow for putting together the newsletter which has become bigger and more informative as each month passes and also for his patience waiting for me to write my piece. Thanks to Jeff Sparrow for his willingness even at distance is to keep managing our Website. Also thanks to Diana Kearns for taking responsibility for the library and Rebecca Fox for her keen writing skills and how things should look to make a good display. Hopefully it will be business as usual but at the same time that we also look at other opportunities to promote ourselves and to support other clubs and event wherever possible. Alan Matchett, President.
