Inside Story 2 From President Steve Fowler The days are getting shorter and the weather cooler, which reminds us that the seasons change.

I think the Fall is my favorite season nice weather that reminds us to enjoy while we can.

Margie and I will be off soon on a trip back East to see some sights, hopefully some fall colors, visit some friends and scope out the camp we will be helping at for 6 months next year.

We will still get a big fix of collector cars, hitting numerous museums and a couple of shows along the way.

Inside Story 2 From President Steve Fowler The days are getting shorter and the weather cooler, which reminds us that the seasons change. Schools are back in session, and soon the hordes from the valley will quit invading each weekend. There are still plenty of fun activities to enjoy this time of year. I think the Fall is my favorite season nice weather that reminds us to enjoy while we can. Most of us club members are in the autumn of our lives, and the season reminds us to go and do those things we keep putting off. Margie and I will be off soon on a trip back East to see some sights, hopefully some fall colors, visit some friends and scope out the camp we will be helping at for 6 months next year. At one time thought we might take the Packard and do shows along the way, but we decided to opt for 30+ mileage with our modern 10-year-old car. We will still get a big fix of collector cars, hitting numerous museums and a couple of shows along the way. As we ll be on the road more than a month, we ll miss a couple of meetings but will be back for the November meeting, just before the SEMA show in Vegas. I hope each of you are making plans to enjoy this season. Carl Curtis is spearheading the Fall Fling, a nice chance to get together in early October, and I hope to see many there (we ll be back). We are also still planning to do a Vets to Lunch event, possibly a run to the Prescott VA Hospital, and of course a Christmas party. We are still looking for some good, willing people to step up to the plate for officer positions and for the Car Show, do it now before you are so old and feeble that you need that rocking chair. LOL Getting involved should be on your bucket list, we need new blood in the STP (Same Ten -or Twenty -People) group to help make things happen. And just because you did it once upon a time in the past doesn t mean you can t do it again. I hope all is well with each of you, and that you are getting some fun and enjoyment in your lives. Hot dogs available and we will try to have Coffee (a number of the club members requested coffee last year). We will also have a drawing for a $25 gift card for those bringing a car. A little research turned up the following: Both Chapman and Coury give discounts to club members.(10%) Both NAPA and Car Quest give discounts, amount varies depending on product, but is substantial. O Reillys does, and it varies also, but you can t combine it with their rewards program, which gives a certificate for $5 off for each $100 spent. Once in their system, you also get $5 and $10 off certificates regularly by in addition to the sales-based ones. Which can add up quickly, I ve probably cashed in at least $50 worth in the last 6 months. Auto Zone does not, they have their rewards program that gives you points for each purchase greater than $20. Five points gets you $20 off on a purchase. If you work it right, breaking up purchases to stay just over the $20 figure, you can get close to a 20% discount. Most seem to honor the discount if you just mention it, but we can give you a card that says you re a member if you want or need it. Enjoy the benefit, and let them know we shop with them. Steve F.

PAGE 6 Cylinder Block Core Shi So you are in the market for a good used cylinder block for your latest venture.

When a block is cast at the foundry, there is usually an inner sand cas ng and an outer mold.

The cri cal area here is the cylinder walls, as they are subject to the most stress and pressure.

Of course, this procedure can only be done ( usually ) a er you have bought the block.

6 PAGE 6 Cylinder Block Core Shi So you are in the market for a good used cylinder block for your latest venture. How accurately the block was cast from the factory should be one of your major concerns, especially if you plan on making more HP then the stock block was designed for. So, what is core shi? When a block is cast at the foundry, there is usually an inner sand cas ng and an outer mold. How well these two items are posi oned in regards to one another before the metal is poured in to the mold determines how much core shi there is. The cri cal area here is the cylinder walls, as they are subject to the most stress and pressure. Having a sonic test done on the cylinder walls to determine wall thickness is a sure fire way to determine core shi accurately. Of course, this procedure can only be done ( usually ) a er you have bought the block. However, there a few things you can look at ( before the purchase) that can give you an idea if it is a good block ( regarding core shi ). First, you will need to determine if the block has a standard bore size or if it has already been bored. Standard over size bores are usually.030,.040, and.060 over bore. Off the shelf pistons can usually be purchased for these over bores. Ideally, you want a block with standard bores, as they will have the thickest cylinder walls and give you the most op ons regarding boring over size if this step is necessary..030 over bore is ok..040 over bore is less desirable ( for obvious reasons ), and.060 usually means the block has been around the block so to speak :>). If the block is naked, ( no intake or front ming chain cover and cam ) there are a few visual inspec ons that you can do to give you an idea of how severe the core shi may be. One area to look at is the front cam bearing bore. The area around the bore hole in the block should be rela vely equal in thickness see pic. Another area to look at is the li er bores. Are the holes rela vely centered in the cas ng areas? Here are some general rules of thumbs ( not all my thumbs ) regarding core shi when buying a stock used block. Making 450 HP or under: Do a visual test. Max over bore =.040 and.030 preferred..060 overbore = walk away from it. Making HP from a stock block: Visual test. Sonic test mandatory. Cylinder wall thickness from sonic tes ng will determine what you can bore the block out to safely. Minimum wall thickness for the thrust sides of the cylinder walls =.170. Remember we are talking stock produc on blocks here, and in that regard, I would consider 600 Hp the max, no ma er how well the block sonic tests. You might be able to spike that number up a bit with things like sleeving, block filling, 4 bolt main caps, but you will be rolling the dice. The next step would be a race block ( thicker cas ng and higher nickel content materials ). Happy motor hun ng, John
