2 OFFICERS & BOARD MEMBERS President: Jerry Lane Vice President: Lynn Sondenaa Treasurer: Bill Peden Secretary: Linda Willey Member at Large: Ron Hall Past President: Dick Bay Editor: Ginny Bay Committee Chairs Web Master: Bob Rusunen NW Regional Reps: Jack Dusenberry-Primary Dick Bay-Alternate Refreshments Coordinator: Dian Lane Tour Director: Lynn Sondenaa Library/Historian: Patty Sondenaa Sunshine: Pat Dusenberry Community Service Director: Sherry Rusunen Garage Workshop: Tom Pagel Public Relations: Don LaBarre REMINDER REMEMBER Our Community Service director, Sherry Rusunen, reminds us the food bank is nearly empty and many people are out of work or needing a little help. Just a small donation goes a long way. We have a large basket to fill each Club Meeting night. REMEMBER REMINDER Front page: 1928 Ford Tudor Model A owned by Mary Jane & Bill Peden Our 28 Model A Tudor was restored by my father in the early 70 s in Redmond Oregon. I know it has a counterbalanced crankshaft because I picked it up from the machine shop in Woodburn Oregon. My mother told of stories about touring to the regional meet in Seattle in 1972 and having trouble on Mt Hood on the return trip. When my Father died in 76, the car went to my brother in Klamath Falls, where it stayed until the early 90s, when it came to me. I moved it back to Redmond while I finished up my military career at Davis-Monthan AFB in Tucson Arizona. Mary Jane and I retrieved it from Redmond out of the barn where it rested by jacking and moving it inches at a time to clear years of stuff that had accumulated in front of it! The gas tank was replaced after it failed on a tour to the Columbia Gorge shortly after we joined the club. We made it over the 205 bridge 100 yards at a time with the choke out. We plan a body-off restoration some day but in the meantime we enjoy driving it to club functions and on tours.

The field therefore will be interested to know of the most recent productions of the Kari- Keen Manufacturing Company of Sioux City, Iowa. Here are shown views of the Kari-Keen Luggage King which already has created considerable interest among dealers and car owners. This trunk is built of auto body steel with baked enamel finish that, it is claimed, will withstand weather and traffic dirt. The hardware and trimmings are of solid brass, of finest design and chrome plated. Closed, this trunk will hold two full-sized suitcases and a hatbox. An unusual feature is the fact that by simply disengaging two catches this trunk may be converted into an extra large luggage carrier which, when fully opened, has a carrying space of 9 square feet. It will carry 40 pounds or more. The manufactures will be glad to Furnish more complete details to any dealer who writes for information

6 TECHNICAL TIP WINTER BATTERY CARE By Lynn Sondenaa The first part of battery care is to regularly give visual inspections. Check for corrosion on the terminals, water level, and cracks in the case. At this time also check for loose cables and terminals. Look at both ends of the cables. Check to be sure the battery holds down clamps are snug. Also check the ground clamp frame bolt connection, as these tend to corrode away. I would recommend using a copper nut and bolt or a stainless steel nut and bolt to insure a good ground for many years. If battery parts have corrosion use a mixture of baking soda and water. Apply to the area; let it set for a few minutes, then clean with a wire brush. Rinse the area with clean fresh water. When dry, the area can be treated with commercial products or petroleum jelly. (Vaseline) The two common commercial products are Ignition spray which is a clear coat made from Toluol. It does not last very long. A better product which will last for a year is Battery Protector & Sealer made by Permatex. Its main ingredients are petroleum distillates, ethyl benzene, xylene, and acetone. Avoid overspray as it will eat into paint. You can also purchase chemically treated red & green felt rings which help prevent corrosion. They fit around each battery post. When checking the water level, do not overfill, also use only distilled water. Tap water will add minerals to the electrolyte which cause it to coat the plates with a chemical build up. This build up effects the lead which in turn affects the voltage produced. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ TECHNICAL TIP by Lynn Sondenaa Some of you have asked where I verify my facts and information I use on the Model A Ford. I use the archives at the Ford Motor Company. This is the contact information to access archives. You will need a fast internet connection and a lot of time. The archives are on microfilm, cataloged from 1903 to That is a lot of material to look at. 7 THE HISTORY OF APRONS Thank you Dianne Earnest for this interesting article I don t think our kids know what an apron is. The principal use of Grandma s apron was to protect the dress underneath, because she only had a few, it was easier to wash aprons than dresses, and they used less material, but along with that, it served as a potholder for removing hot pans from the oven. It was wonderful for drying children s tears and on occasion was even used to cleaning out dirty ears. From the chicken coop, the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven. When company came those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids. And when the weather was cold; grandma wrapped it around her arms. When dinner was ready, Grandma walked out onto the porch, waved her apron, and the men knew it was time to come in from the fields to dinner. It will be a long time before someone invents something that will replace that old-time apron that served so many purposes. Grandma used to set her hot baked apple pies on the window sill to cool. Her granddaughters set theirs on the window sill to thaw. Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot wood stove. Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen that apron. From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables. After the peas had been shelled, it carried out the hulls. In the fall, the apron was used to bring in apples that had fallen from the trees. When unexpected company drove up the road, surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds.
