Maine Trail Riders Association, Inc. May 2018 VOLUME 25 4 HOOFBEATS Official Newsletter of The M T R A THE NEXT MEETING IS May 11, 2018 Officers: Trudy Bickford, President Sally LaBree, Vice-President Cathy Small, Treasurer Sandy Craig, Secretary Board of Directors: Donna Tripp 2018 Julie Anderson Cathy Small 2018 Riley Morse 2019 Melissa Bourgoin 2019 Lynn Aube 2019 Nancy Weeks 2020 Sally LaBree 2020 vacant 2020 President s Stall Summer is coming! It is time to clean up your gear, get those saddle bags ready, and let the riding season begin! The first ride of the season will be in Newport, starting at 10AM on Saturday, May 12. We will need lots of help at the Halee Cummings Memorial Barrel Show food booth, where we will be running the food booth on July 1 & 2. We need donations of food, plus lots of help at the booth. We are being relied upon to provide breakfast, and for that, we will need help starting as early as 6AM. This can be a really good fundraiser for us, but we need your help to do it. Please contact Nancy Weeks to get on the schedule to work at the booth, and to let her know what to expect from you for food donations. Nancy can be reached by to mcgiver@tds.com. Our next meeting will be on May 11, starting at 7:30PM. The meeting will take place at the MTRA clubhouse in Litchfield. One more note, there is a Work bee scheduled for May 9AM, to clean up the Clubhouse and adjacent grounds. Bring gloves and tools. Thank you and I look forward to seeing you soon! Trudy. 1

SECRETARIES REPORT MTRA General Membership Meeting: April 14, 2018 The April 14th, 2018 meeting was Sally Labree s home in Monmouth, ME and was called to order by President, Trudy 2:06 p.m. Guests Introduction / New Members: Trudy extended a warm welcome to new members in attendance Karen LeBlanc, Ken Holt, Charlyn Marquis, Payton Rose Lizotte & Anna Crowley Secretary s Report: Posted in Hoofbeats for general membership review. A correction to the fund-raising potion was made by Cathy to read as follows a discussion was held with regards to having our food booth attend an equipment auction being held by Dick Brown in Topsham ME; however, the food booth is already booked for the weekend. Further discussion was held at weather or not it would be feasible to try to throw a food booth together for the event *like we have done in the past for Safe Haven*; however it was decided that it would be to difficult and the decision was made to let Dick know that we would be unable to provide assistance for this event. The possibility of providing a food booth for the Maine Horse Association Horse Shows was also discussed; and it was decided that since show dates were not known and the possible long-distance travel to these events a decision was made to let Bob know that we would be unable to aid with these events as well. Last correction to the minutes was a correction to the dates *in the minutes only* for the Haley Cummings Fundraiser which should read June 30th, 2018 to July 2nd, A motion to correct the above items by Cathy, seconded by Missy and passed. Treasurer s Report: Copies of report passed out to general membership for review, read & accepted. Board of Director s Report: No report Committees: Trail Report: Cathy passed around a revised list of rides for the 2018 riding season. Julie inquired if she could change the dates of her Vienna ride from 7/27 through 7/29 to 7/13 through 7/15. This is a meeting weekend, so Missy motioned to cancel the July 14th meeting, seconded by Joanne and the ride dates for Julies Vienna ride have been amended to 7/13 through 7/15. Trudy passed around a copy of a letter received from Dana *Trail Chair from 2017* he would like read to the membership. It was decided that it would be best if the letter would read and discussed at a BOR meeting versus the general membership meeting and a BOD meeting was set for 7:00 p.m. at the clubhouse. Show: 2

Missy met with the MeBRA last week with regards to the Topsham Horse Show and weather or not they would be interested in running the afternoon classes as well as what they would require. The MeBRA is good to go with running the afternoon classes based on the following criteria. The only funds that will be allocated to MTRA from the MeBRA classes will be $2 from the $10 grounds fee that MeBRA charges to each of their participants and all money raised from the afternoon classes will belong to MeBRA *with exception to any funds raised by the food booth*. Missy has discussed this time restraint with Kyle Smith *judge* and he does not feel that the 12:30 p.m. cutoff will be an issue. MTRA morning portion of the show will need to be completed and the Secretary s booth cleared by 12:30 p.m. However; with this said MTRA member would still be needed to stay as a MTRA presence would still be required as well as helping in the food booth. Missy stated that Miss Rodeo Maine will do the presentation of colors for the show. A motion by Julie was made to have MTRA run the a.m. portion of the show and MeBRA run the afternoon portion of the show based on the information provided by Missy, seconded by Nora and passed. A show meeting has been scheduled to held on 5/3/18 at the clubhouse after the BOD. Trudy mentioned that Lynn would still like to see Equine Assisted Participants attend the show and the general discussion is that it would work out fine to have them attend. Missy plans to keep the lead line classes included in the show program for the pleasure classes; however, a meeting needs to be held to put together a class list and review the ribbon count, so an order can be placed if needed. Discussion was held with regards to the potential loss of income from our lack of holding the afternoon classes and it was further discussed that we might want to do away with our daily flat charge and raise our per class fee to try to make up for some of the potential income loss. Publicity Report: Sally sent our ride list to the Horses Mane for print in their newsletter. A discussion was held that we possibly include in our list that rides schedules are subject to change. Trudy stated that she has updated the webpage. Building and Land: Cathy is going to reach out to an Electrician to have them install a new service. She also mentioned that we need to schedule a work bee to work on the grounds. A work bee was scheduled to be held on May 20 th, 9:00 a.m. The work bee will be for the interior and exterior of the club house. Cathy asked Julie about the broken telephone pole at the end of her driveway to see if we might be able to use it as a hitching post at the clubhouse. Julie stated she thinks it will be too short but will check it out. Trudy stated that Nancy told her that there are several boards on the bleachers that need to be replaced as well. Missy will reach out to Nancy to discuss what supplies will be needed for the bleachers. Fund Raising: Missy stated that we are expected to provide breakfast at the Haley Cummings Fundraiser 6:00 a.m. so it is important that we have plenty of volunteers to help. We will also need volunteers to provide baked goods and other items of food for the food booth. Missy also spoke with regards to a potential fund raiser for a future event which would be making primitive signs. You pre-pay for the materials and meet to make the signs at a specific location on a specific date. She will investigate this further as this may be a good spring fund raiser. Food Committee Report: No report Entertainment Committee Report: No report Parade Committee Report: Cathy stated that the American Legion has extended an invitation to the MTRA to ride in the Memorial Day Parade 3

Hospitality Committee Report: Cathy stated she mailed a get-well card to Lorry Polly for her recent heart attacks Junior's Report: No report Correspondence Report: Per Nora if you have any good tips for the newsletter send them to her attention. Missy mentioned that Double G in Lebanon is closing in June and that they have some great sales going on. Old Business: Rachel inquired if Nancy had contacted anyone to inquire if the Maine Mounted Search and Rescue could use the grounds on 6/16 & 6/17. Missy motioned to allow them to use the grounds, seconded by Sandy and passed. New Business: No report Remarks for the Good of the Order: Sally stated do introductions for the new members, so the new members introduced themselves as well as current members. Cathy extended a huge thank you to Sally & Carl for hosing our annual banquet & membership meetings at the house for January, February, March and April. Brags: No report Membership Count: 14 Seniors / Juniors 2 / 2 Dogs Raffles or Mystery Gifts: No report Motion to Adjourn: Made by Missy, seconded by Joanne - meeting 3:46 p.m. Respectfully Submitted, Sandy Craig, Secretary TRAIL COMMITTEE REPORT Trail Committee Chairman: Well folks, I do believe that Spring has finally decided to get its groove on. I am hungry for green grass and trees leafing out. Our first affiliated ride is coming right up on May 12. The Newport RR Bed will be good footing and I look forward to reconnecting with you all. There are still weekends available if you would like to sponsor a ride. Please contact Cathy Small to reserve your day or weekend. Let s make this a great riding season. Julie 4

* * * * * * * * * Trivia Question for May 2018: Standardbred harness horses race at either a trot or a pace. Which gait is faster? Trivia Questions submitted by Cathy Small Straight from the horse s mouth: F Y I Origin: Horse s teeth size and shape can directly tell the age of the horse. When someone was looking to buy a horse and determine the age, they would look straight into the horse s mouth, rather than ask the seller. Most common meaning: Getting information directly from the source, rather than hearing it through others. * * * * * Myth #7 from The Trail Rider magazine March 2017 edition submitted by Lynn Aube If a tornado kicks up, you should take shelter under a bridge or a highway overpass. Busted: This seems logical, but in a tornado, don t get under a bridge or highway overpass. You ll be completely exposed, you ll be in the wind shear (where the wind is worse), and there s no place to really hide. If there is time, get out of the left or right of the approa ching storm. Think DUCK: D-go DOWN to the lowest level; U-Get UNDER something; C-COVER your head; K-KEEP in your shelter until the storm has passed. April 2018 Trivia Answer: The first cloned horse, Promotea, was what Breed? Answer: He was a Haflinger. EQUINE EXTRA: Promotea was born May 28, She is named after Promotheus, who stole fire from Mt. Olympus to share with mankind in Greek Mythology. Answer will be in next month's Hoofbeats. 5

Newport ride Saturday, May 12th 10:00.AM Starting in you guessed it, Newport. However, the starting point has moved to a new parking area across from the Ford Garage on route 7 & 11. From interstate 95, take exit 157, take a left if your headed north or right is your headed south) Go straight through the set of lights. Continue miles and you will see the new gravel parking area on your left near the trail crossing. This makes it better since you no longer have to go through the store parking lot. This is an old railroad bed and is ideally suited for carts. The terrain is flat and very pretty along the Sebasticook Lake We will encounter many ATV riders along the route. Lunch will be soup or hamburgers depending on the weather, provided by Nancy. Please bring drinks for yourself, and a halter and lead line for your horse. We will return the same route. Website If you have info to submit to the website, please contact Trudy Bickford by phone or trudybickford@mainetrailriders.com. Hospitality Please help Cathy Small by keeping her informed of anything where the club should send out a card, flowers or more. She can be contacted via at: Cathy@MaineTrailRiders.com ECTRA is hosting a competitive trail ride clinic on Saturday, May 19th in N. Waterford, ME. I don t know but some of your members might like to come and find out about competitive distance trail rides. The website is ECTRA.org and includes a helpful Handbook and a Rule Book. We will be discussing the sport and how to ride a distance ride including conditioning of horse and rider. We will have lunch and then do a 5 mile trail ride for those who bring their horses. We will ride as if this is a competitive ride.. Entrants do not have to bring a horse but can be on the ground to see how it all works. If interested please contact Louise at louise1@maine.rr.com Thank you, Louise Lester 7
