1 Maine Trail Riders Gt6 Association, Inc. July Volume H FBEATS Official Newsletter of The M T R A NEXT MEETING IS JULY 11, 2010 Officers: Missy Bourgoin, President Trudy Bickford, Vice-President Donna LeBlond, Secretary Marsha Polley, Treasurer Board of Directors: Brenda Lary 2010 Dana Lary 2010 Nora MacDonald 2010 Nancy Weeks 2011 Vicky Dixon 2011 Missy Bourgoin 2011 Julie Anderson (ex-efficio) Donna Tripp 2012 Marsha Polley 2012 Cathy Small 2012 Sandy Craig 2012 (ex-efficio) President s Stall Greetings, here we are in July already, any big plans for the 4th? This year has already been 100 times better than last, which has made for some great early season riding. Our annual spring ride had a few mishaps, but due to some quick thinking by several members, all issues were resolved without incident. Thank you to everyone who helped in these situations. The Moxie festival is coming up on July 10th. We are obligated to have a minimum of 10 horses riding in the parade and Sally needs volunteers and ponies for the pony rides that will be taking place in the center of town. We may also need a volunteer with an ATV and dump cart for poop patrol. Please check with Sandy ( ) if you are willing to donate your time and equipment. Friday night we will all be gathering at Sandy Craig's farm on Route 9 to wash ponies. Horses riding in the parade are also welcome to stay Friday night and we will ride from Sandy's house Saturday morning to the assembly area. Upon completion of the parade we will then ride the horses through the park back to the house. This is our 2nd largest fundraiser for the year so everyone's help is needed and greatly appreciated, many hands makes for light work. The theme for this year is "Life, liberty, and the pursuit of MOXIE," so be creative and design a costume for you and your horse. Saturday night s meeting has been rescheduled to Sunday, July 11, and will be held at Nancy's house on the lake. It is going to be a beach party, meetings and cookout. Pack the station wagon and bring the whole family to hang out for the day. There will be swimming and bocce ball. We will have our general membership meeting followed by a BBQ.

There's always room for one more. There's the poor kitty standing in the rain, I've tried to entice him time and again. One ear's crumpled, the other's been torn, blind in one eye, lost and forlorn. He's coming now, so I'll open the door. There's always room for one more. Dec 11 - Club meeting and Christmas Party at the MTRA club house In Remembrance Tribute to Katie There's Always Room For One More Author Unknown I see by his coat he must be a stray, the untidy look gives him away. He's lost his will and is so thin hasn't eaten, since God knows when. I know as I coax him through the door, There's always room for one more. The other night in the freezing rain, a little female came again. Matted and soaked, crying in need, lost and alone with babies to feed. Her pleading eyes I couldn't ignore, There's always room for one more. There's a new face on the docks today, hungry but clean, to my dismay, I stroked her head, her body rippled. When she got up I saw she was crippled. This poem is in the memory of Katie, who will be sadly missed by Cathy, Ethan, & Shamus. August 23, May 28, 2010 Tip of the Month Information found under the Tip of the Month may be on the Junior Test at the end of the year. Tips for Trailering a Horse in Summer If you will be trailering a horse in the summer, these tips will help keep your horse cool during transport. By the Editors of EQUUS magazine The inside of a horse trailer can easily become 20 degrees warmer than the air temperature outside. Horses working to keep their balance in such conditions can quickly become stressed, fatigued and dangerously overheated. As you travel this

6 6 July 2010 HOOFBEATS summer, take precautions to ensure your horses stay cool on the road. Open trailer windows and vents. But make sure that doing so does not encourage a horse to assume an inappropriate position while you are moving. Do not put sheets or coolers on traveling horses, even to keep them clean. They ll overheat and arrive sweat-stained anyway. Skip heavy quilts and bandages on legs and go with lighter-weight shipping boots. If all the horses in the trailer are experienced travelers, you may want to ship with just bell boots on to protect coronary bands. If you have to stop en route, park in a shady spot if possible. Offer the horses water before you set out again. Once you ve arrived at your destination, unload and offer more water as soon as you can do so safely. Source: lering/summer_trailering_tips_061510/ Wanted! Since I don t scour Uncle Henry s like Dick did, I am asking club members to keep an eye out for a 36 table top propane grill for the clubhouse. The club currently owns the 24 grill and they use my 18 grill. I would like the club to have 1 large grill so I can keep mine and the current club grill in my cook shack. I would purchase the larger grill and exchange it for the one that the club has now. Thanks, Nancy Weeks I am thinking about hosting a bomb proof clinic. Before I do this I would like to put a request out to the club and members for feedback and how many would like to attend? Cost will be small but enough to cover basic expenses.
