December 2014 Page 2 Editor s Corner Hard to believe this is the last newsletter for Sue and I have had a great year attending many SDC events and enjoying the company of all our friends. We had another great Thanksgiving meeting with the Conestoga Chapter at the Forney Museum. On behalf of all the Conestoga members that attended, we would like to thank Christof for once again opening the Museum on a Sunday for all of us to enjoy. We also want to say Thank You to Jodee Studebaker and Jim Klein for decorating the tables and supplying the table service. There was a good turnout and after a spirted discussion all Conestoga board members will stay on for another year. This will be a big help with the Zone Meet in Eaton, CO as this board has a great plan in the works. I am looking forward to being your editor in 2015 and want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Rick December Events Conestoga: Old Neighborhood Restaurant, Sunday, December 21, 5:30 pm Pikes Peak: Hotel Elegance, Saturday, December 6, 11:00 am Western Wheels: Steinwart's Home, December 13, 6:00 pm Wyoming: No meeting planned until March, 2015 December Cover Car The Studebaker on this months cover is the 1963 Gt Hawk owned by Conestoga Members Steve & Sandy Doerschlag. This spectacular Hawk has been featured in Turning Wheels and was on the cover of the June 1963 issue of Motor Trend Magazine. Photos by Carey Dietz
Western Outlook December 2014 Page 3 COLLECTOR CAR COUNCIL OF COLORADO CCCC The CCCC, formerly known as Old Car Council, was formed to protect the car collectors of Colorado at the State level. It is a member of SEMA that is the Federal level to protect car collectors. Therefore, any member of a club that belongs to CCCC can attend the SEMA show in Las Vegas where the latest of accesories for a car are featured. Your club dues to CCCC help pay for a Lobbyist, Leo Boyle, who keeps track of anything introduced in committee that would affect the car hobby. The CCCC was successful in stopping a bill in committee that would have prevented the alteration of any suspension on a vehicle. The bill was aimed at the people that build the high, big tired trucks and then drive them on the street. It was pointed out (to the legislators) that their bill would also keep any car collector from changing the suspension on an old car to improve handling and safety. They hadn't even thought of that side of it, so the bill never made it out of the committee. The really good things they have been able to put through were the Re-Builder Title. You can build a car out of parts from more than one car, even if none of the cars have a title. you can apply for a Re- Builder Title once the car looks like a running chassis body and wheels, no motor is needed. You can sell the car with a Re-Builder Title. Once the work is completed and the car is inspected again, you have a clear title. The title will not have the word "Salvage" on it like it used to be. When they raised the prices on our license plates, they were able to keep the low prices for the Horseless Carriage Plates and for the Collector Plate. You only pay the high price for one year, and the other four are at the lower price. We attended a SEMA meeting one year in Las Vegas. While seeing the SEMA show, they used Colorado as an example of how all States should watch the local government. We are lucky to have the CCCC and feel it is a privilege to be a part of it. Submitted by CCCC representative John Glusick
Western Outlook December 2014 Page 4 Conestoga President's Message Greetings and warm tidings to all of you in Studebaker Land! We had a wonderful turnout of over 30 people for our Thanksgiving Potluck at the Forney Museum and as always, enjoyed lots of wonderful food! There was the usual business meeting which included a lengthy discussion stemming from my column last month about poor attendance and my leadership concerns. For those who weren't in attendance, the consensus was that poor attendance, particularly for orphan car clubs, is systemic across the board. What creates this issue and what are possible solutions to the problem? Well, several ideas were given, but in the end, there doesn't appear to be any single or simple answer to the problem. Many people cited too many other commitments, others not wanting to drive their vintage cars in today's heavy traffic or not knowing far enough in advance about our meeting dates and times. All-in-all, it was a productive discussion which gave much pause for thought and hopefully will result in more good ideas being brought forth. As far as the nomination of officers is concerned, well that too, was discussed, but in a less lengthy manner, so to speak. A motion was made, seconded and approved by a acclimation of those present that the current slate of officers be retained for We appreciate the membership's overall confidence and support of the sitting board, clearly understanding member's desire for continuity in the new year, in particular with the Zone Meet this coming July. Another item raised was the creation of a "Resource List" to help guide those of us in the old car hobby to reliable parts and service resources. An excellent idea, we would like any Conestoga or other chapter members who have had repeated and/or consistently positive experiences in either area to please submit that information to me (ckheim@yahoo.com) by the end of January. We are looking for any car-related businesses or suppliers, including sources for chrome plating, upholstery, carburetor rebuilding, exhaust shops, engine rebuilding, paint & body, etc., etc. These resources need not be local; only reliable & trustworthy, performing a quality service. Once we have received submissions over the next 2 months, we will then compile a list for publication. We look forward to your participation in this worthwhile project. Following a Conestoga Board Meeting in January, we will publish a calendar of events and activities for the coming year. We hope this will be helpful for planning purposes and result in better attendance in the New Year. Please keep in mind that every effort will be made to adhere to the calendar as published, but as always, scheduling is subject to change and we appreciate everyone's understanding when that becomes necessary. And in closing, I would like to wish everyone a very Happy and Healthy Holiday Season! Cordially, Christof
Western Outlook December 2014 Page 5 Conestoga Tourmaster Report: Conestoga Members, this month's Tourmaster Report will be brief with just a few items. First, please see the attached Holiday Party flyer which also appeared in last month's Western Outlook. For those who wish to join us at the Old Neighborhood on the 21st, PLEASE RSVP by December 13th along with payment for the dinner. We will have a gift exchange for those wishing to participate. Men bring a man's gift and women bring a woman's gift; $20 limit. Second, we are in search of a location where we can host our Annual Conestoga Chili Cook-Off in January. Our perennial hostess, Marge Grauberger, no longer wishes to host such a large group, typically folks, so we are looking for another host or location to hold the event. If anyone is willing to open their home or knows of a meeting space which would allow food to be served, please get in touch with me as soon as possible. The date for the Cook-Off is Sunday, January 25th. And finally, mark your calendars for Saturday, February 21st. We plan a visit to the Denver Firefighter's Museum and have lunch out. Happy Holidays and look forward to seeing everyone on December 21st. On October 11th, 2014 the Western Wheels members met at Don Gregory's car storage in Kimball to tour his collection. Members present were Loren & Valerie Hoekema; Stuart Tritt; Perry, Jackie & Corina Meyers and Corina's friend; Don & Betty Steinwart; Earl & Becky Johnson; Dallas & Lucille Whiting; Mary Miller and joining us for the meal was Don & Julia Gregory. We had a very good meal at the Windbreak Restaurant. Our November meeting was on the 8th at the Panhandle Buffet in Scottsbluff and I understand there were not enough members to have a meeting. I am sure we will have an excellent turnout for our December meeting and Christmas party which is again being hosted by the Steinwart's at their home on Dec 13th at 6:00 pm. We will again be bringing donations for the Scottsbluff Doves. Stuart
Western Outlook December 2014 Page 6 PIKES PEAK CHAPTER---COLORADO SPRINGS The November Thanksgiving meeting was held on November 15th at the Golden Corral Restaurant. Seventeen members were in attendance, along with two Studebakers. We had one guest, Marsha White's sister Patty, visiting from California. Fred Cappo called the meeting to order. Secretary and Treasurer reports were approved. Several members asked that they be put on the Snail Mail list for the Outlook. This will be taken care of by Trish Harness. Dave Batchelor asked for additional orders for the lightweight jackets. He mentioned that he had to go to another distributor, the only difference in jacket will be the color. It is a little darker, but not really that noticeable. They are a very nice, lightweight jacket with name on one side of front and SDC logo on the other. The back has a larger Pikes Peak logo. If you are still interested get in touch with Dave Batchelor at either twojunner@bresnan.net or phone 719/ The Christmas meeting will be at the Hotel Elegance on December 6th. Reservations had to be made by December 1st. If you wish to participate in gift exchange, bring a gift. Mark whether it is for a male or female. A list of recommendations for monthly events was passed around for suggestions and ideas. Some dates were changed dued to holiday events that prevent parking close to the venue. Doreen Chase passed around a list of charitable recommendations to be voted on at the December meeting. Voting for new officers will also be on the agenda at this meeting. President: Fred Cappo Vice-President: Marsha White Secretary: Trish Harness Treasurer: Norm Gieseker Jim Harness
