October 2014 Page 2 Editor s Corner September was a busy month for all chapters with the International Drive Your Studebaker Day and the Fall Colors Tours.

I would like to thank Bill & Toni Neiman for the great tour they had set up at the Devils Tower and the surrounding area, and also for the BBQ steak dinner held at their home.

We parked outside of the Cheyenne Train Depot, had dinner at the Shadows Pub, and talked Studebakers with the locals. Enjoy the Fall everybody!

2 October 2014 Page 2 Editor s Corner September was a busy month for all chapters with the International Drive Your Studebaker Day and the Fall Colors Tours. We joined in the Fall Colors Tour with the Wyoming Chapter at Hulett, WY. I would like to thank Bill & Toni Neiman for the great tour they had set up at the Devils Tower and the surrounding area, and also for the BBQ steak dinner held at their home. We were not able to get down to Denver in time for the Conestoga Drive Your Studebaker Day, but we did a solo trip to Cheyenne. Sue and I drove our Hawk about 130 miles that day. We parked outside of the Cheyenne Train Depot, had dinner at the Shadows Pub, and talked Studebakers with the locals. Enjoy the Fall everybody! They debuted the car after it s recent restoration at the Zone Meet in Custer. It Drew a Crowd!

3 Western Outlook October 2014 Page 3 Conestoga Greetings to my fellow SDCers! Here we are, already over three-quarters of the way through 2014 and 2015 will be upon us before we realize it! As always, there is a lot going on in the old car world with car shows, auctions, cruises and more continuing well in to the Fall. Hopefully a few of you are able to get out there with your Studebakers and "show 'em off"! Speaking of which, the Conestoga Chapter enjoyed a small turnout, but very nice International Drive Your Studebaker Day on September 13th. We had seven cars participate in the drive, with an eighth joining us at our lunch stop, Aunt Alice's Kitchen, in Longmont. The weather could not have been any more beautiful and the participant's included: Glenn Shull in his '49 Commander Starlight; Shirley & Roger Zaner in her 1957 President; Carey Dietz in his '58 Packard Hawk; LeRoy Andrew with copilot Joann Beldt in his '61 Hawk; Will & Lori Sander in their '61 Lark; Joe & Shiela Rink in their '63 Avanti; Marge Grauberger in her 1964 GT Hawk and yours truly with Vice President, Tour Master & co-pilot, Rex Osborn, in my 1951 Land Cruiser. Sadly, due to an unexpected work conflict, I was unable to join folks for our annual fall colors tour to Frisco and, despite my absence, want to extend a huge "Thank You" to our meal & meeting hosts, Beverly & Tom Wheeler. If they are inclined to be our gracious hosts again next year, (and barring any unexpected conflicts) we hope to boost our participation greatly as only 7 folks partook this year. I understand the colors were incredible; all the more reason to be sad to have missed out. Work continues to progress on the 2015 North Central Zone Meet in Eaton, with a more detailed schedule now in place and a wonderful "logo" designed for advertising, T-shirts and dash plaques. Requests for sub-committees and assistance will be soon forthcoming, so please consider volunteering early and often! October's driving tour to Colorado Springs and activities sound very interesting and I want to take this opportunity to extend an invitation to the Pikes Peak Chapter to please join us; as a matter of fact, you are ALWAYS welcome to join us for any of our events! The "Money Museum" sounds intriguing and for those who haven't been to the eatery, Johnny's Navajo Hogan, it is worth the visit just to see the architecture alone. Hope to see a few more folks out for this event and weather permitting, LOTS of Studebakers! As always, Studebakerly yours, Christof

4 Western Outlook October 2014 Page 4 Conestoga Saturday, Oct. 25 th we will be driving our Studebakers to Colorado Springs to visit the American Numismatic Association Museum (Money Museum) followed by lunch at Johnny s Navajo Hogan Restaurant. The Conestoga Chapter welcomes all Pikes Peaks Chapter members to the Conestoga s Chapter s Saturday, October 25th activity! Studebakers will round up at the Aspen Grove Shopping Center next to Champs Restaurant located at the corner of S. Santa Fe Dr. and S. Bryant St. in Littleton. It is the first driveway into Aspen Grove as you re heading south on Santa Fe. We will meet at 8:00 for an 8:15 departure. We plan to arrive at the American Numismatic Association Museum at 10:15. Pikes Peaks members feel free to join us at the ANA Museum or at Johnny s Navajo Hogan Restaurant at 12:30. Anyone who has not been to Johnny s Navajo Hogan Restaurant is in for a REAL treat! The food is excellent but the ambiance is even better. I won t go into a lot of detail but take my word for it; it s cool with a capital C! We will be taking a more leisurely route that is conducive to all Studebakers except possible a horsedrawn wagon, unless you have a fast team of horses Please RSVP by Wednesday, October 22nd so we can give the museum and the restaurant a head count. 5 Western Outlook October 2014 Page 5 Pikes Peak Septembers meeting was a triple play for Pikes Peak Chapter. The club got together and participated in another car show, the Stockers End of Season Cruise Night, our fourth show this summer. It was also the International Drive Your Studebaker Day and the club came thru with eight member cars on hand to participate in the event. We even managed to have a short and informal meeting and decided the only new business was to have a good time on a beautiful August Saturday afternoon. Stockers did have their pot luck in spite of the Cruise above the Clouds early that morning, so we all managed to have a great lunch and several of us made the cruise thru Garden of the Gods when the party ended at 4:00. Our two newest members, Rodger and Lynn Hargis showed up with their classic Studebaker President. Thank you Rodger and Lynn for you participation and thank you to all the members that came out. Merv commented that its always a successful showing when there are more Studebakers present than Chevy s! The next meeting will be a pot luck at Mervs place on October 18th, so bring a plate and any Studebaker pieces and parts that you might want to sell or trade. We should start showing up at Merv s by 10:30 to 11:00. We will also have a more comprehensive October meeting now that the summer is over. The only old business for now is the Jacket project which Dave is working on. He has a jacket and will bring it to Merv s for all of us to take a look at. He will also be ready to take orders for those who want one. About $45 to $50. Some of the items we need to discuss will be the election of new officers and some suggestions as what members would like to see for future events and meetings. The two last events for the 2014 year will be the Thanksgiving lunch at the Golden Corral on Powers Blvd on November 15th and the Christmas luncheon at the Hotel Elegante on December 6th. Whenever good things are done in our community, I think it appropriate that those things be recognized. I am using this opportunity to recognize Marsha White and her granddaughter for their volunteer work every Thursday at the Colorado Springs Rescue Mission. It is always a good thing to support these things financially when you can and if you can, but it absolutely demonstrates much more dedication to physically show up and do the work. Thank you Marsha for your contribution. BTW, Rescue Mission is always looking for volunteers to support their efforts there. Submitted by Fred Cappo

Bill and Toni Neiman put on a great dinner and meeting and Mother Nature also did an outstanding job getting the colors vivid, bright, and plentiful, with clear skies with which to enjoy them under. Although as always, short on Studebakers, we had a great active group attend. And yes, your president had brake problems and drove an off brand street rod, sorry! At a very productive meeting, we discussed the web page for our chapter, and voted this down with the plan to investigate a Facebook page and report later the membership. This will need attention and updating, so we need folks to input ideas and volunteer if possible, thanks. The next meeting will be in Buffalo, Wyoming sponsored by Ellis and Annette Black on the 18th of October, place determined by weather at the time, call to RSVP to , thanks. This will be our last meeting this year, and will discuss and decide on the next location and sponsor for the 2015 Fall Colors Tour due to planning involved, so be there and make your choice count. Remember, your elected officers term will expire with the next meeting in March, so start thinking of volunteering or your choices, Thanks. Jim Harkins Due to construction difficulties at the Black household, we will have our October meeting at the Bozeman Trail Steakhouse in Buffalo, Wyoming. Thank You to Bill and Toni for sponsoring the Fall colors Tour and serving great rib eye steaks. Thanks to all of the members present for participating in the great potluck dinner: Bill and Toni Neiman, Rick Hawkins and Sue Bordwell, Leonard and Jane Holler, Ellis and Annette Black, Connie Thompson, Jim and Leslea Rapp, Jim and Carol Harkins, and Stan and Donna Smith. Treasurers report was approved and passed, having all bills paid and dues collected with a balance of $ The minutes for July were approved and passed, as we did not meet in August. Old Business: There was a lengthy discussion about the web page and it was suggested to have our information under the National SDC with a link to our club. There was a motion by Jim Rapp and seconded by Carol Harkins to accept this, motion carried. Facebook does not cost, however it does need to be maintained. This suggestion was tabled. The Buffalo Car Show on Aug 9, did not have a good attendance, however we did give our Orphan Trophy to a '29' Ford Caboret. New Business: We discussed coming back to Hulett, having other destinations, and it would be discussed further, with all of us putting on our thinking caps for next years tour, at the October meeting. Ellis motioned, Carol H. 2nd and motion carried. Free membership, by drawing, was given to Stan and Donna Smith as they were the new attendees at the Fall Colors Tour Congrats! The October meeting will be with Ellis and Annette Black in Buffalo, at 1 pm, however stay tuned as to where it will be, due to the weather. After a great day, with the weather and beautiful colors, great fellowship, and full tummies, the meeting adjourned at 9pm with Leslea motioning and Ellis seconded. 8 Western Outlook October 2014 Page 8 Western Wheels On Saturday September 13th, Several Western Wheels members met at the Gering High School parking lot for International Drive Your Studebaker Day. The members were, Dallas & Lucille Whiting in their 1958 Transtar Pickup, Mary Miller & Wanda Mowry in Mary s 1958 Packard Hawk, Stuart Tritt in his 1984 Avanti, Don & Betty Steinwart & granddaughter Haley in their 1952 Starliner Hardtop and Perry, Jackie & Corina Meyers with niece Lisa in their 1961 Hawk. Leaving Gering we went on a drive through Scottsbluff and then headed west toward Wyoming. The weather was perfect for a nice afternoon drive in our Studebakers. We ended up in Torrington Wyoming for lunch at Grandpa Chuy s Restaurant. After lunch we drove to a park in Torrington to have our business meeting. On Saturday Sept 27th, several Western Wheels members drove their Studebakers to Kimball for the Farmers Day Parade & Car Show. Members attending were Dallas & Lucille Whiting, Don & Betty Steinwart with granddaughter Haley, Perry, Jackie & Corina Meyers, and Stuart Tritt. Our October meeting will be October 11th at 3:00pm in Kimball to tour Don Gregory s car collection. November meeting will be at the Panhandle Buffet in Scottsbluff, located at on E 20th St at 6:00 pm. This will be our nominations for officers meeting.
