Christmas Party Festival of Lights Parade Salem A.B.A.T.E. Toy Run Donations to our charities Proposed Activities Membership Renewal Sponsored by Walker s Cycles, 3601 Silverton Rd. NE, Salem, OR (503) Salem HOG News

2 2004 Brings some Changes to the Board Director Kay Fristad Assistant Director Terry Parks Secretary Dana Gough Treasurer Peter Lundberg Activities Officer Tacey Little Safety Officer Chris Gough Photographer Lori VanDusseldorp Membership Officer Candy Stiers Webmaster Kevin O Malley webmaster@salemhog.org Senior Road Captain Al Stiers fncstiers@comcast.net Historian Jane Allen hdlver@juno.com Editor Terry Fristad terryfristad@comcast.net Newsletter Staff Dana Gough, Chris Gough, Alan Wilding Deb Wilding Louise Schuening, Lori Vandusseldorp, Marlene Schroeder, Dave Elam, Carol Lundberg, We will miss Jim and Marilys Neighbors, as Jim has been transferred to Medford and will be managing the new Walmart Superstore planned for Central Point. I guess it is asking alot to want them to commute to chapter activities. Both have been active members in all our functions and Marilys was our first membership officer. She has agreed to train Candy Stiers in this role. Special thanks to them and you will certainly be missed by all. Candy, thanks for stepping up to fill this important role. Our Head Road Captain for 2003 has recently moved into a new home (and it is gorgeous), however, there is much work to do and he has asked to step down. Dan has done a terrific job and I know he will be as active as possible in the coming year. Thanks Dan! Replacing Dan will be Al Pinky Stiers. He has been a road captain for many years and will do a terrific job for us. Welcome! Diana Hill did a terrific job as Safety Officer over the past few years but now needs a break. She kept us on the straight and narrow with the many reminders of the hazards out there we need to be aware of. We will never forget the importance of proper tire pressure. Kudos to Diana for all she has done. Chris Gough will be the 2004 Safety Officer and he began preparing for this in the fall by participating in the AMA Sanction and Safety meeting. Jane Allen will be this years historian and I am sure she will bring new ideas and efforts to this area. Tacey Little will be this years Activities Officer and I want to express my appreciation as well as that of the group to Louise Schuenning, who truly works herself to the bone for our chapter and the Blue Knights and just about anyone else who needs assistance. This lady really knows how to put things together! Sgt. at Arms this year will be Tom Barrett, so if you see him heading your way with the hammer, BEWARE! Seriously, Lori took this on last year and gained alot of respect. Funny how when you walk tall and carry a heavy stick, folks take notice. Continuing on in their positions this year will be Terry Parks as Asst. Director, Peter Lundberg as Treasurer, Dana Gough as Secretary, Lori as Photographer and Lil Kevie as Web designer. Many thanks to everyone who stepped forward to make last year a success. This year will present many opportunities to excel as well. Look forward to working with you all. Kay Newsletter Staff Meeting Changed to the THIRD Tuesday of Each Month The Salem HOG News Staff will be meeting the THIRD Tuesday of each month starting this month. On Tuesday January 20th at 6:30pm, we will meet for an eventing of food and fun at Dave and Debby Elam s, near Aumsville ( ). You are welcome to join us, just give Dave a call. 2 Salem HOG News

3 Salem Abate Toy Run We had a great turn out with about 40 or so bikes and several vehicles. The weather was wet, windy and darn cold. CMA provided hot coffee for all the brave souls that showed up at K-mart to help support us and bring more toys for the kids. I had a phone call the day before from the Chief of Police in Stayton informing me that we MUST ALL STOP at the stop signs and we WERE NOT TO DO ANY TRAFFIC CONTROL (such as block traffic for the bikes to go through in a group). This is against the law. We are not Police Officers and have no authority to do so. Ok, we all know that, but don t pay attention to that on the toy runs. I was also informed that stopping traffic is not just a case of getting a ticket, it is a DISORDERLY CONDUCT infraction and WE WILL BE ARRESTED!!! Never mind the fact that a lot of people have worked really hard getting toys etc. for THIS CITY. Anyway, I told everyone personally, so no one would get in trouble. We never saw one cop on the whole ride! We had a wet ride to Stayton, where Patt and Doug headed home. We picked up a few more people in Stayton. The Stayton Fire Dept. provided us with coffee and doughnuts. They were real happy with all the toys, canned food and the check for $ We proceeded on to the Silverton Resource Center, where we were expecting coffee and hot dogs. BIG SURPRISE, NO ONE WAS THERE!!!! Well, now that was embarrassing!!! Here we are with about 30 wet and cold bikers and not even a cup of coffee. Our pickup was jammed with toys, which stayed in there for a couple of days until I caught up with the guy responsible. He apologized. He said he had been stranded in Grants Pass. We gave him the stuff, only because we had committed ourselves to do so. A BIG THANKS TO THE CMA, ABATE, HOG & ALL THE OTHER BIKERS THAT SHOWED UP. Your support was greatly appreciated. A big Thank You also goes out to all the Road Captains of 2003 for your commitment of your time and efforts in creating and leading the various rides this past year as well as being along on them for the support and riding in the suggested positions in the group. Good job! I sure am looking forward to getting back to riding as soon as this recent spell of cold, uh well, I mean freekin freezin weather clears. However, maybe later, in a few weeks when we have a few sunny days and the roads dry out and you may be thinking of going for a ride to get a fix for those winter season riding blues and you re thinking of heading out to your favorite route or section of road, be very careful of those corners yet as there will most likely be lots of gravel from this year s blessing, or curse of snow pending on your personal view of course. So in closing, I want to wish everybody an enjoyable and safe riding year. Catchya on the road. Head Rd Capt Dan Lindquist Chapter Renewals due Now! Renewals need to be in to the membership officer prior to Mar. 31st to keep you on our roster and mailing list! As a motorcycle rider you can ride just about anywhere you please. That s OK, but to really have a lot of fun it s nice to do it with a group of others that are all wanting to have a great adventure. That s what HOG is all about. Harley riders helping other Harley riders enjoy their motorcycle experiences better. To be a Salem Chapter HOG member you must be a current National HOG member. This entitles you to a number of benefits from National HOG and a connection to a locally dealership sponsored chapter. Your $15 chapter membership provides you with access to a number of funded Chapter only activities such as Newsletters, the Festival of Lights Parade, Chili Feeds, Camp-Ins, and Christmas Parties. These events are designed and funded for Chapter members only and not for other friends. Renew your membership NOW and encourage other friends to join as chapter members and help support the activities that we all enjoy doing together. NOW is the time! Make sure you are a current National HOG member and sign up to renew your Salem Chapter HOG membership. Complete the release form and show your current Hog National Card and submit to the membership officer with your annual dues of $15. Terry Thank you all for your support! I wish to thank each and everyone of you for your support over the past year and to issue special thanks to all who served on the board and as road captains and volunteers for our various projects. Participation is the key to having fun with any group and we have so many who are willing to give of their time and talents to enhance this chapter. We are fortunate in this respect as I have spent many hours talking with officers from other chapters and they do not have this type of support and certainly, few have as much fun as our chapter. The more you participate in the different chapter activities; rides, fund-raisers, impromptu get togethers, work parties, rallys etc, the more you will get out of your membership. There is also the added bonus of really getting to know many wonderful, caring people. There are few minuses in being an active member of the chapter and many, many pluses. Never be hesitant to volunteer for activities, it is one of the best ways to get to know each other and develop lasting friendships. Kay 4 Salem HOG News

5 Salem HOG Christmas Party What a party! This year s was held again at the 300 Club, which by the way does a great job. It was a good turnout by our Chapter and nice to see some faces back in our midst. Christi Finholt was there after a long year of surgeries and our old friends Ray and Theresa Carson also showed up, looking to once again rejoin the Chapter. Our Director Kay was resplendent in her lovely outfit. After the dinner the gift exchange went on and the usual one gift short happened once again! What gives! Louise did a great job trying to coordinate the present swap. It s a huge task with so many of us. HOG s doing what HOG s know best. Eating and BS ing. Afterwards, we all headed over to the private room where again, our own Eddie Gifford and his band were there waiting to rock us through the night. This year seemed like more of us were dancing. Good job Eddie. At times some of us wandered into the main bar to take a look around and it is always interesting who you might see dancing in a cage! We all know who we are! HA-HA. As the night grew old it was time for the band to close up shop. We applauded Eddie s Band and headed back to the main bar to finish up the evening festivities. With several of us still there, the dancing on the floor and in the cages continued. Being well past my bedtime, we headed home leaving only the hardiest still there to close the joint. The next morning was somewhat foggy, but I did at least remember that this year s Christmas Party was an awesome event. Good job, Louise and to the entire Chapter for making this HOG group the best it can be. The Cigarman A very rare picture of Rainman w/o his signnature finger. Gene, get will soon! 5 Salem HOG News

6 Who s dancing with who? Bad Girls, Bad Girls...Whatcha gonna do, Whatcha gonna do, when they come for you? Pick it Eddie! 6 Salem HOG News

7 Parade Work Party With this team of highly trained technicians, it s a wonder this float all came together! 7 7 Salem HOG News

8 Salem Festival of Lights Parade Wow, our float just turned out SO AWSOME!! I was way beyond impressed as it went by! The way it had transformed from what we made separately in our individual groups to the amazing glowing, float that went by!!! My favorite part (of course) was that big grinning pig, but, ALL kudos for that pigs bigger than life GRIN go to Ms Kay! She did his entire head. Dang I am sorry you weren t here for the full effect Kay. But I hope you had fun in sunny Mexico! And... we WON THE PGE award!!! Only bummer was they lost the banner to carry in front of float announcing winner, so the crowd didn t get to know we won. Karla says they announced it on TV, but she couldn t make out what it was that we won. The darned Statesman Journal didn t have a pic of it in the paper next morning, and had listed us as Rockin Riders, which prompted my daughter to call me and say, sorry you guys didn t win anything. I said THAT IS US dammit. lol General public won t know that was HOG though. The big pig might have been a a hint if they had printed a picture... Thank you to Glenn and Carol for getting us our tables at the brick! We all got to watch the parade warm and dry through huge plate glass windows! Of course we had to run out and scream and yell when our float and riders went by. God bless their hardy souls, and Terry Catton s bike was beyond lit up! Just amazing, and Statesman DID publish a pic of him! Thanks to Doc and Judy for hosting a celebratory gathering afterwards, for all the parade people at their pub!! We had a great time there as well! Great bartenders, and good music and dancing. They even bought all our drinks, and are in general wonderful hosts! Thanks!! In spite of the nasty weather, it was a super night from begining to end! Kathy W 8 Salem HOG News

10 Each year the Salvation Army holds a Toy Drive to help families during the holidays. What most of us do not realize is, these toys then need to be sorted by age and sex and then distributed to these families. This is the second year that members of Salem Chapter have gone out to assist in these efforts. Thanks to all who were able to make it out there. This is a tough one, as it is usually during the week and requires many to take that extra day off from the job. Two $1,000 Donations Go Out to Local Groups From Salem Chapter HOG As we try to keep Donations from Salem H.O.G. local to our community, we were able to present checks this year to two local entities. The West Salem Children s Guild which helps children make the Mind to Body Connection gratefully acknowledged the donation. They provide services to handicapped children at no cost to those without insurance coverage. We also presented a check to the Salem Elks Lodge for the Oregon State Eye Association/Childrens Fund. This is also an extremely worthy charity and we have had chapter members who have benefitted from their services as well. The folks at the lodge were extremely pleased to see us help support one of their favorite charities. Kay 10 Salem HOG News

Call Louise at Wine and Chowder Festival, Jan If you enjoy good wine, seafood, and jazz, you won t want to miss the Wine and Chowder (and crab) Festival at Willamette Valley Vineyard in Turner Some of us plan to attend Sunday, January 18th. starting at noon, for $5.00, you will receive a festival glass and enjoy good wines, good food, people watching and good music until 6pm, if you last that long. Just meet your fellow HOGS at the vineyard at noon Sunday to enjoy a day of fun and fellowship and of course, good vino. Questions? Call Louise at Custom Car and Speed Show Jan Sign Up to Show your Bikes We have been asked to particapate in this years car show. We just finished the Salem Light Festival Parade and will not be able to build a large detailed display, but the Car Show NEEDS our bikes and a simple display to help fill in the space we would normally take. PLEASE clean up your bikes and help us make the Salem Car and Speed Show a success. We will discuss the details at the January meeting. Security (Door Monitors) Once again Salem HOG will provide Door Monitors at the Salem Custom Car and Speed Show at the Fairgrounds Saturday and Sunday, January 24th and 25th. This entails manning the doors (seven total) to make sure no unauthorized persons enter or leave without using the main entrance. Salem HOG earns $500 for doing this. Please sign up at the January meeting if you are able to work one or more 2-1/2 hour shifts. If you would like to help and are not able to attend the meeting, please call Louise at or her at softailrider6@yahoo.com. Hours are Saturday 9am to 10pm and Sunday, 9am - 6pm. Really need to fill the Sunday slots as this was originally thought to be SuperBowl Sunday so many didn t sign up for the Sunday shifts. Shriners Toy Run The Shriners Toy Run in Portland, Ore. has long been one of the largest Toy Runs in Oregon. Enthisiasts on all types of bikes turn out to support the Shriners Hospital Toy Run sponsored by Portland, Ore. A.B.A.T.E. Thousands of bikes line up for what is a terrific parade through downtown Portland, which then takes you up to the Shriners Hospital. Salem Chapter members turned out to support this event and become some of the thousands participating. Typically our group will turn off prior to the hospital and take our toys to the Ronald McDonald House which works hand-inhand with the hospital. Of course, then it is off to breaakfast as HOG s do have to eat! Kay 11 Salem HOG News
