1 Volume 20 No. 2 February 2009 HOG CORRAL NEWS SALEM HARLEY OWNERS GROUP #1997 SALEM HARLEY-DAVIDSON SILVERTON RD., NE, SALEM, OR PH: Chapter Party at Roth s on January 31 Inside this issue: January Meeting, Chapter Party, January Meeting, Member Profile, February/March Calendars, and more
2 Director s Corner I want to welcome everyone to another year in the continuing chapter of Salem HOG. I can see already that this new year will bring with it more plans for activities, more organized Chapter rides, more comradery with our dealership, and more social interaction between members. We just had our 2008 Chapter Party on January 31, 2009, and I am serious when I say that I was very happy to see all the just plain talking going on. Most folks were wondering around and talking with many people instead of just a few. The food was good. Ric and Wendy did a great job providing background music for us so we could still socialize with everyone. Bill and Rich entertained us with an ongoing photo display of our member s travels and experiences in Jane read her biker story very well, and kept most all of us heavily engaged in passing the table gifts around without confusion. The best part was that as I watched Jane s story unfold, everyone was smiling and laughing. I sure hope everyone was having as good a time as it appeared. One of the main reasons to belong to a Chapter such as ours is that it provides a simple way for people with a few similar interests to get together, pass on thoughts, stories, riding experiences, ideas, future plans, and factual information. We are very fortunate to have so many members from so many walks of life that can still get together, pass on thoughts and ideas, and then ride off together to create additional memories. Steve Udell passed on a Harley ABS brake notice to me at the party that I sent out to everyone over the News Group. Thanks for the information Steve. Another such idea passed on to me was by our very own Ken Johnson. I would like to pass his idea on to all of you. Thanks for taking the time to do this Ken. I would urge all HOG members to consider taking steps to secure their saddlebags better than they come stock from the factory. Somebody with a screwdriver can easily steal saddlebags in a matter of seconds if the springs that are used on the touring bikes are not removed and replaced with a more secure bolt on set-up. For the tourpak, Harley makes tour-pak detachables locks that can replace the quick release locks and they can be installed in a matter of minutes. But... HD does not offer a secure solution for the saddlebag mounts, so I picked up the parts that I needed at a Hardware store. It is a pretty easy fix to secure your bags and it only costs about $10.00-$ Just take 1 of your quick release pins to any hardware store and match up the diameter and length for an Allen head bolt (about 1-1/2 inch length). Then get 2 nylon nuts and 2 wide washers for each assembly like the wide washers on the inside of the saddlebag. Also, plan to re-use the washer on the inside of the saddlebag. With the nylon nut you still have a semiquick release to easily take your bags off when you want to. Parts List: 4-1-1/2 Allen Head Bolts, 1/4 x 20 Thread, 8 - Large Fender Washers (about 1 1/2 diameter), and 8 - Nylon Nuts to fit Allen Head Bolt threads. Instructions 1. Take off bags and the wire thing that the original lock pin attached to. 2. Insert Allen head bolt and washer from the back side onto the mount that is attached to your bike. 3. Screw on a nylon nut to secure the Allen head bolt to the saddlebag mount that is attached to your bike and tighten it down tight. This makes the Allen head bolt stationary and secure. I did this to both the fasteners on each side. I like using the Allen head bolts because it is more difficult to remove than a hex head bolt - I can still take my saddlebags off in a few minutes so it is still important to lock the saddlebags for security when the bike is unattended. 4. Adjust bag mounts to the bag holes and install bags over Allen head bolts. The bags have a rubber grommet in the holes and it covers most of the nylon nut when you screw on the nylon nut inside the saddlebag with a large washer and tighten. 5. Done. Tight, neat, clean and hopefully more secure. Have a safe and enjoyable Holiday season. Dave Nichols 2 Check the web site for the most up-to-date information.

5 Member Profile - Patricia Nichols Name: Patricia Nichols Spouse/Significant Other: David Children: Dan 24, Doug 22 City And/Or Area You Live: Canby Lone Elder area Hobbies Interests: I like to ride my bike, paint (motorcycles), read, scrapbook and procrastinate What Year Did You Join Salem Hog? 1997 We use to go to meetings when they were held at Pietros Pizza Parlor. Current Harley: 2000 Fatboy and 2008 Street Glide Your First Harley (When And What): cc XLCH Sportster. David s first Harley he bought off the showroom floor, I dug it out from under some haybales in the barn decided it was pretty ugly, then decided to strip it down to the frame and redo it. (many thanks to Fingers who use to draw me pictures on how to put it back together!) this endeavor also started my painting career I couldn t be riding an ugly bike! My girlfriend, former member Patti Forsythe and I decided we wanted to learn to ride Harleys. So we both went and signed up for Team Oregon s beginner riders course. After passing our class and receiving our endorsements, we spent hours practicing what a great accomplishment it was to make it from Canby to Molalla Several more hours were spent dragging David along with us to help improve our skills. And the rest as they say is history! (I ve put 128,000 miles on my 2000 Fatboy and working on wearing out the Street Glide!) When Did You First Start Riding? 1997, the same year when I joined the HOG Chapter. Longest Trip: hmmmmmmm that s a tough one We do a lot of long trips David and I rode up to the Yukon and into Alaska a few years ago.. then a couple of years ago, we rode to POT in Vegas. We had a short amount of time to be to Vegas and then we raced out of there for some meetings in San Antonio. That was a long ride as we had a short time also to get there. The ride home was more relaxing. I think we did about 5k in less than 2 weeks. I just got back from running to Maine with Jane that was about 10k and then turned around and went to Wisconsin that was around 6k. Lot of great long rides! Most Memborable Trip: They are all each memorable in their own ways each one is special.. be it the people we are with or the places we go. They all make for great stories, and we have piles of them! Your First Large Chapter Ride: My first large Chapter ride was up to Portland to a National HOG event Hutch, who was our safety officer at the time, led us up the freeway, into Portland across the Burnside Bridge, which just so happens to be steel grated Talk about hitting every scary thing all in one ride not only having to ride in formation, but dealing with high speeds, changing lanes, bad drivers, hazardous road conditions, oodles of traffic and tons of people What a great adventure that was! It is Never to Late For a Happy Childhood -Robin Williams Never do anything you wouldn t want to have to explain to the paramedics... 5

Now that the weather is starting to remind us that some really good riding weather is on its way, maybe its time to take your helmet off the garage shelf, dust it off, and take a good look at it. And, when you do, here are some things to consider. Most helmet manufacturers recommend that you replace your helmet any time you notice damage and when your helmet is in the 2 to 4 years old range. Why? Inside the outer helmet shell, most helmets have a polystyrene (can you say Styrofoam?) material designed to absorb impact and reduce the shock to your noggin. Over time and use, the absorption qualities of the polystyrene break down. Even if your helmet still looks fine, the ability of the helmet to provide the shock protection it was designed to may be greatly reduced. Since brains do not like shock, you should make sure your helmet is sound or buy a new one. For more safety information about motorcycle helmets see the Motor Cycle Safety Foundation (MSF) web site at: 11
