1 Volume 20 No. 5 May 2009 HOG CORRAL NEWS SALEM HARLEY OWNERS GROUP #1997 SALEM HARLEY-DAVIDSON SILVERTON RD., NE, SALEM, OR PH: Salem HOG Group Photo Time Inside this issue: Director s Corner, April Meeting, May/June Calendars, Rose City 250, State Parks Ride, and more

2 Director s Corner Riding season is fast approaching and we need to remind ourselves to think safety and do a few simple tasks with our bike prior to riding very far. The T-CLOCK form found elsewhere in this Newsletter is a good safety check tool to use for your bike in preparation. I also took our bikes into our Dealership for a professional safety check prior to our riding season. A loose shifter shaft led the tech to find a bearing going out in the primary. This would have been a disaster on the road miles from home. Think about it. The first 2009 Friday Niter May 1 was a good 35 mile ride around South Salem ending at The Great Wall Chinese Buffet. 20+ bikes joined the ride. As the lead bike, I got a real thrill seeing bikes strung back behind me for over a quarter of a mile on the long sweeping curves and on Hylo Road. The rush I get from seeing and hearing all the bikes running together is something I recommend to everyone. Our Salem HOG Chapter has a ride leaving the Salem Harley-Davidson Dealership every Friday night until the end of September at 6:15 pm. Come on out. If you haven t experienced a group ride and are a little concerned about riding in a group, come out on a Friday night, look up a road captain, and ask them to give you a few pointers and position you in the pack so you can enjoy the ride. We also will have a two group riding classes, early in the riding season, led by our safety officer and road captains to cover the specific safety and general details of our group riding techniques. I want to mention that we had a great turnout for the second Poker Run Planning meeting. With this many enthusiastic folks we will have one very good Poker Run. Please join them in helping make this a Poker Run to remember. Like so many of us, I have had a dream to retire from work and take a long Harley ride with Patty around this country of ours. I made the decision to do just that. My folks are reaching 90 years of age this year and this trip would not have been possible without them in my life. So, while they are still with us to enjoy the trip through phone calls, post cards, and weekly picture DVD s, we are going to do it. Our trip will basically cover all four corners of the U.S. in California, Florida, Maine, and Washington. We will also endeavor to ride in all 48 states while we are at it. The trip will cover over miles and will take at least 60 days. We leave May 15, I want to say a special thanks to Jane Allen and Robert Grove for stepping up and covering for me while we are gone. The board as a whole of course will continue to work to provide our Chapter with a fun riding season. Jane, I can t tell you to your face how much your help means to me, but I can say it here. Thank you. So to all, have a very safe and enjoyable riding season, we will keep in touch as our ride progresses, we also will have a Travel Journal with pictures on a web site which you can access from a link on the Salem Chapter web. Take care all. 6 State Parks Challenge Starter Ride Saturday April 11, 2009 We met at Salem HD for a pre-ride briefing and were on the road by 9:00A for our State Parks Starter Ride. It was a little cool and cloudy, but generally the weather cooperated nicely. Toward the end of our ride we did get sprinkled on a little. We started out with a total of 8 people and 6 bikes and made our first stop at Willamette Mission State Park. From there, we made a loop that mostly kept us on the road less traveled by and took in a total of nine parks from our state parks list all of them North of Salem and generally covering the Willamette Valley up to the Columbia River at Portland. We ended the day with six people and four bikes almost directly across the river from our first stop, at Maud Williamson about 160 miles from our starting point at Salem HD. We stopped for lunch at Lewis and Clark which is a fee-free park with picnic tables located where the Sandy River meets the Willamette. It was a nice relaxing ride. We did do three turn-arounds, all of which were due to my failure to set the right scale on my GPS display and not realizing I was at the turn, but we managed to do this with minimal chaos and without going too far astray. There is a nice turn-by-turn voice feature on the GPS to keep this sort of thing from occurring, but it only works for those who are smart enough to actually listen to it. We found that some of these parks have little or no safe places to park motorcycles for pictures with the park sign. Tryon Creek was probably the worst, so we got a picture of all the people, our 2009 sign, but no bikes in it. It is probably better to do the Portland Metro area parks in smaller groups. Our most exciting moment, at least for the ride leader, was when the GPS dutifully led us up to the bridge in Oregon City, just as I told it to, but the bridge was closed for maintenance. We eventually figured out how to get across the Interstate bridge instead, and thereafter the GPS got us back on our route to Mary S. Young from Molalla River, but we all sat there staring at that closed bridge (as if the construction folks were about finish up their work and reopen it for us) for a couple of what now? minutes before moving on. We wound our way through Portland getting Mary S. Young and Tryon, then we went across the Sellwood Bridge then out through Damascus and Boring and finally up to the Gorge Scenic Highway and Dabny. After Willamette Mission, we wound our way up to Champoeg, then through the back roads crossing I-5 near the North side of the Aurora Airport and on through Canby to Molalla River. 6 We our third (and final) turn-around when the GPS (and everyone behind me) wanted me to turn right onto I-84

7 State Parks Challenge Starter Ride Continued to get us to Rooster Rock, but I couldn t bring myself to believe that the GPS (and all the folks pointing and motioning behind me especially Dave) were actually right and that my instinct was actually wrong, so I started across the bridge to the other I-84 entrance ramp but it was quickly apparent that was not going to work out right; hence a turn-around, then on to Rooster Rock. We got a quick couple of pictures at Rooster Rock and then on to Louis and Clark for our picnic lunch. It was a little after 1:00P and I think the folks who hadn t filled up on junk food at our gas stop in Clackamas were getting a bit hungry. After our lunch break at Lewis and Clark we did take I84, I5, and 99 just to get us back through the city the quickest way, then we rode through Newberg, Dundee, Dayton, and then back along the opposite side of the Willamette toward West Salem until we reached Maud Williamson almost directly across the river from Willamette Mission. We ended the ride and split up there with Dave Nichols and myself taking the Wheatland Ferry and everyone else heading south toward West Salem. This was a nice relaxing spring get the cobwebs off ride. I really enjoyed it (and needed it). We got to check off nine state parks, we all saw roads and scenery we have never seen before, the camaraderie was great, and we got home with lots of daylight to spare. Thanks to everybody who came along. Ride safe and have fun. Robert Grove Assistant Director Salem HOG. The Bikers Life, the Bikers... 7

13 Salem H-D Discover Oregon Silver Falls State Park WOW WOW-What a turnout!!! I heard about 89 bikes and 120 Bikers showed up for the First Salem Harley Dealership Ride of the Season. I think that was many more than expected, and had the Gold wings not had their Right Turn Only Ride the same day we probably would have twice that many. We had a great ride from Salem to Silverton, and then in the back way to Silver Falls, and on into the park. I bet all the cars in line to get in wondered how come all the Bikers got to just cruise right on past the line. The guy who does the hot dogs (sorry but I don t know his name) was there & busy making them up for all of us hungry Bikers. We had big (good) dogs, chips, water & a cookie. Such a deal for five bucks!! Thanks Cliff. We did get a Chapter picture for the State Parks while we were there. Several door prizes, although I didn t see them, nor did I hear who won the 50/50-nor how much it was. Let s see I KNOW I was there, but probably someone was talking too much for me to hear. My excuse!! Nikki did a fantastic job collecting money for the lunch tickets, and getting everyone registered all by herself. Thanks Cliff for a great ride and lunch. Marlene Schroeder 13

14 Road Brother MC Poker Run The Road Brothers MC had this Poker Run to celebrate their new club house, also some Birthdays. Starting point was at the Crossroads Bar on N.River Rd. in Keiser. From there we went to the Hard Candy Gentalmens Club on NE Commercial. Now THAT was interesting---probably a lot more interesting after the entertainment started!!!!!hmmmm!!!!! Next stop was at the Chase Bar in Independence, which was very nice since it had been remodeled recently. Finally got to use the Restroom and get a drink---wasn t much interested in doing that in the previous one!!!!! On to the last stop before the end. It was at the Stone Front Tavern on SE Commercial. I ve been there before and knew it was very nice, also they have really good burgers--but--since the last stop was next and a pig was on the BBQ we all decided to wait and eat later. Last stop was at their new Club House, over by the Eagles Club in one of the rental units. What an unique idea!! They had it all fixed up with couches, chairs, table, fridge, big cooler and a bar. Man you could just live there. They also built an upstairs, although I have no idea what was up there. A lot of people spent a lot of time fixing that place up. They did an excellent job too. We arrived early, and since they weren t doing the drawings etc. until about 5:00 we decided to leave and go and visit with Connie. We HAD to come back--as I had high hand and Walt had low hand--at least when we left we did. We got back around 4:00 and discovered that someone else beat me out of high hand, and same went for Walt. BOO HOO!! Walt won a hat, Louie, Bill and Connie nothing. I won a plastic cooler jug that they were going to fill with Jungle Juice for me-- weell--since I don t drink I wound up with a can of coke. OH JOY--guess I should have taken the Jungle Juice and given it away. We had a really good time catching up with old friends, and eating BBQ and pulled pork, salmon & shrimp, several salads and rolls. Everything was delicious. I guess there were about 70 bikes in the end, so that was a great turnout for them. Marlene Schroeder 14
