3 VOLUME 23, ISSUE 5 May 2012 Pioneer Group Meeting Notes 4/14/ April 14 Pioneer HOG group meeting Fred called meeting to order at 9 AM. Rides described: Holly after meeting, Richard Rose next after meeting ride, Mike will lead rode to Rhody Run May 19, Randy leads June after meeting, See Rich if you are going to Hells Canyon June Some are also going to Spring Street Vibrations in Reno June 1-3. Remember to get a drawing ticket for wearing chapter gear: winner has their breakfast paid for by the club. Karen introduces herself, makes newsletters and poker run flyers available, encourages everyone to get on the Yahoo newsgroup, as it has updated event calendar and sends out reminders automatically. Also members can send messages to the entire group. Bill Rietz reminds everyone interested in the Cowboy Dinnertree ride July to call the motel to get their room reserved. Mention Pioneer HOG to get one, because he has them all reserved for us at this time. Nancie gives treasury report: ~$165 in petty cash. Breakfast drawing winner: Mike O Day drawing $45 won by Cindy, $22 given to Karen to take to treasurer. Joke by Bruce Oswald. Randy reminds everyone about Pine Mtn Poker Run July has a $1000 payout. Ride will be KSU from K-Mart at 10:30 Adjourned 9:45 AM. HOG Board Meeting Minutes 5/3/2012 Directors: Craig Gilmore, Bob Wiro, Karen Brown, Loni Barrett, Dana Johnston, Kym Johnston Guest: Bob Brown Dana: Hot info Dealership representative at HOG meetings employee is the point for complaints at meetings. So they are reluctant to attend. Treat them as guest, not use at the barking point for dealer. We need to encourage others not to pester them. Suggestion to give points for participation: points attending meetings, dealership events, rides. Redeem these at the end of the year. Karen suggests use points as auction bucks for end-of-year events. Craig worries it would be a slippery slope, paying people to work for HOG. Dana says it is not consequential, and we should revisit this next meeting. Marc Gore wants us to brainstorm info for 2013 State Rally: could be rewarding, maybe out of McMinnville, again we could Poker Run planning: we have to decide soon, Dana wants to defer to the PR committee. Jim suggested at PRC meeting we order 400, but board says we always have some left over, and the order should be ½ is the appropriate size. Craig moves that board authorize pieces. Carried by unanimous vote. Karen will get with Bob W regarding payment. Treasurer s report: dues over projected budget. Karen mentions that newsletter costs will also increase, with more copies printed for more members. Dana asks about newsletter mailing: Karen says most have opted out of mailing. Loni says the old files are time consuming to structure the archive of the website. Dana wants to know about a projector for showing photos at meetings. Karen may start that again. Another HOT topic: positions of trikes on rides, ride where they are most comfortable, not in the back of the group. Tribute to the Troops: volunteers needed to help chaperone the ride. See Dana if you are interested in helping. This is different than tribute to Fallen Soldiers. Sponsored by dealership, road captains can get involved. If not HOG or HD, then it should not be discussed at any HOG meetings. Marc says we can choose one of the Discover Oregon rides to do the for our charity. Dana says if we put the charity money into HOG account, we could be taxed on it. It may be appropriate to have them help at some events: run a table at the poker run. Someone should approach them about this. Next meeting at Sizzler on Lancaster, June 7, 6:30 PM. July 5 meeting at Dana s house. Meeting Adjourned 8 PM. Page 3

7 VOLUME 23, ISSUE 5 May 2012 There were a lot of bikes: I counted 81. I heard there were 86. It s really hard to count bikes. Over a hundred people. Marc Gore had a nice route picked out for us, through McMinnville, to Tom s barn. The weather was a bit cool, but not rainy or windy, so not so bad for late April. Nice to see some scarce faces, new faces, familiar faces. Good eats from Steve and Sue. Lovely scenery, and a great charity for the too: Tribute to the Troops organization. We raised over a hundred dollars for it. Woo Hoo! Karen Brown Page 7

13 Iris Festival Parade: Let s Do It!! This year we (Salem HOG) are sponsoring Mid- Valley Women's Crisis Services. I have been a volunteer and afriend of this great organization for many years, so as a business I also sponsor them. They have sponsored a "men against domestic violence" group. In just a few weeks (19 May) we will be in the Keizer Iris festival parade. Jill and I are sponsoring the entrance fee, the cost of the candy, and a float for carrying participants. What we really need are MEN. We need to fill the trailer with real men who say "no" to hitting their wives/girlfriends. It would be great if many of our HOG chapter men and women would ride their bikes and/or on the trailer to show their support; to give other women inspiration to live a better life; to say to girls that there is a better way than to be a victim. We are trying to change the thoughts of young boys about how to be good men. This is just a parade, but it will be seen by many thousands of people. Last year we walked with signs and the look on faces as they read what we were walking for was amazing, as was the clapping as men and women showed their appreciation for this movement. And we saw a knowing look on the few who thought we were wrong. We will meet on Lockhaven Rd. Staging opens at 7:30. River Road closes at 9:00. Judging 8:30-9:30. Parade begins at 10:30. VOLUME 23, ISSUE 5 May 2012 Mount Saint Helens Anyone? I have been wanting to do an overnight ride to Mount St Helens and I am thinking about the weekend of July 21st and 22nd. The plan would be to leave Salem Satuday morning & ride to the Johnson Observatory via Hwy 504 & then onto Cougar, Washington via Hwy 503 for an overnight stay. On Sunday ride to the Ape Caves and then back to Salem via Hood River, Government Camp, and Estacada. Total distance of just under 500 miles. There is only one Motel and one Bed & Breakfast in Cougar but before I start making calls to see about availability, I would like to know how many would be interested. RSVPs would be greatly appreciated, especially if folks are interested in riding bikes. RSVPs can be sent to me. If anyone has questions, they are welcome to contact me. Thank you, Daniel Wolf Please let me know as soon as possible and if there is enough interest I'll look into it further. Mark Dostal Page
14 HOG Corral News Page 14 Brunch Ride: Not planned; just taking advantage of a great day! Mark Dostal gave us a shout on the HOG Yahoo newsgroup: Brunch ride on Sunday, April 22. Because it was supposed to be 80 degrees in the valley, and really nice in the mountains too. So about 20 of us took him up on it. We were rewarded with a great ride through central Marion and Linn Counties. We had lunch at the Skyline Inn in Sweet Home. What a crowd we made in the restaurant. That s our server, worn out after serving two giant tables. After lunch, some cut out to go elsewhere, while many continued up into the snow country. Nothing cold that day, just drifts beside the road. Photos by Marlene Schroeder and Mark Dostal
15 VOLUME 23, ISSUE 5 May 2012 After Pioneer Meeting Ride April 14, 2012 Only a biker knows why a dog sticks his head out of a car window. Lots of fun after the Pioneer Group meeting: Holly Smith led us on a covered bridge tour. We ended up at Mac s in Silverton, and found a few others who had missed the meeting, and didn t know we were going to leave from K-Mart, not the restaurant...oops! Gotta work on that. Page 15
16 HOG Corral News Preview of Ending Sites for Poker Run: May 6 Five of us set Sunday to survey the places proposed to have the poker run end place. It was cloudy and cool to begin with, but the day brightened considerably as we traipsed from Cascade Gateway to Macleay Country Inn, out to Roaring River, back to Waterloo, Bowman, Helmick and Monmouth. Monmouth was preferred, for its low cost and nearby amenities. We ended at Bob and Karen s favorite taco shop, around the corner from the Monmouth Park. Page 16
17 2012 HOG CHALLENGE VOLUME 23, ISSUE 5 May 2012 This year s HOG Challenge will take us to 21 towns all across the state of Oregon. These towns are listed at the bottom of this sheet. Choose your own route, take roads you are comfortable with. It s about the ride, not the destination. To qualify each visit, have your picture taken with the 2012 HOG sign provided, or another sign that says 2012, with your bike and the a sign that has the name of the town on a building in the picture. Find a building like the post office, library, city hall or a school if you can. A hardware store, coffee shop, grocery store, etc. are good alternatives. If you are alone, take a picture of the bike, the HOG sign and the town sign in the picture. Please do your best to get a picture that shows you and your bike were there this year. Remember, if you forget your HOG sign, make another one, but try to do it on something other than white paper, because the white signs blaze out so badly that you can t see the 2012 on it. Submit the photos in an album or on a CD/DVD by the November 2012 HOG meeting to the Chapter Challenge Coordinator: Bill Francis. His phone number is His address is mmbfrancis@hotmail.com. Album option: put each town on a separate page, and put the pages in alphabetic order. Label the top of the page with the name of the town. CD/DVD option: Submit the photos as files labeled with the town name as the beginning of the file name, and then the date of your visit. OR Make a document in Word, Publisher, PowerPoint, or something like that, with each town on a separate page/slide. Put the pictures in alphabetic order. A narrative about your visit would add color to your album. Let s have a great time!! Let s ride! See ya on the road. The list of towns, from northwest to southeast Vernonia McKenzie Bridge Plush Siletz Chiloquin Weston Elkton Westfir Granite Powers Wamic Diamond Kerby Fort Rock Troy Gold Hill Bonanza Imnaha Colton Paulina Nyssa Map on the back: do not use for navigation. We recommend using an Oregon atlas. The one published by Bench Mark is excellent. It includes great detail of minor roads, and is reasonably accurate in showing which roads are gravel. Page 17
