2 Director s Corner Greetings to one and all. I hope everyone had a great Holiday season. I am slowly trying to work and figure out this new role that has been set before me. January Tid-Bit They say time heals all things. Try sitting in a Doctor s office. I know the weather is cold and wet; hopefully we are still getting out when there is a free day without too much rain and enjoying the roads. At least for me, I am not going to wait for sunshine and 80 degrees. Call me crazy but my bike isn t going to rust nor will I and as long as I can ride safe, I will. The weather is what it is and I know that a lot of you fill the same. Let s all just be safe and keep the rubber side down. There has been a lot going on in the last month. We ve had some very cold temperatures including snow, hopefully all remained warm and safe. The Chapter flyers that Wendy had printed up were taken to the Dealer for distribution. There was a good turnout for Bill s Birthday party with lots of cake (and once again a great job to Darrell and Connie and we can t forget the Salem Harley dealership). Wendy s Bike has finely been reborn. The paint job is outstanding (great job by Patty). There are preparations going on for the 2010 Road Captains (Thanks George). Anyone interested in becoming one of the 2010 Road Captain please see George Allen. Our new 2010 Safety officer Jim Johnson is already planning on putting together a safe rider program and a new group rider training program. Clif, from the dealership, has informed me of a couple new events that will be taking place this year. The Chapter is being asked to help. I can t go in to much detail at this time but as soon as I have more details I will let you all know. One of my main Goals will be to grow the chapter. Mark Dostal (our new 2010 Assistant Director) and I have talked and felt that we needed to have some focus directed towards membership. We ve been brain storming along with others, on some of ideas for growing and retaining members. Darrell Rybloom had some great insight on this as well. And last but not least let s not forget our Holiday party. I hope to see you all there. Andy Johansen 2

No, its not because its too hot. Such was the thinking on a weekend of Toy Runs in early December. The Shriner s Toy Run was on Saturday with the various groups and riders meeting at the Portland city bus garage area in southeast Portland. There was plenty of coffee and hot chocolate to help us recover from the frosty ride. The adventure started when folks left their garages and found a thin coating of ice on many roads and bridges. Excitement is why many started riding motorcycles, but this might have not been what was planned. Despite the ice and freezing air, at least a couple of groups of riders totalling nearly 30 bikes left Salem. The rendezvous in Portland was awe inspiring as over 6200 bikes converged to donate over 12,000 toys where they were loaded into four waiting city busses. The groups from Salem broke off from the main group for a separate donation of toys to the Ronald MacDonald house near Shriner s. We were received with smiling faces and plenty of drinks and snacks. The route went by Powell over the Ross Island bridge and then twisting through the West Hills to the Shriner s hospital. This was more a parade than a ride. Major thoroughfares in southeast Portland were barracaded off for the thousands of bikes. Many bikes were decorated, some were still stacked with toys, and all were greeted by people lining the parade route waving and smiling. This is a heart-warming event that really brings the entire biking community together for a great cause. ABATE put on a well organized ride that should generate not only a wonderful contribution to a worthy cause, but also goodwill for a very positive event. Bob Albany AMO Toy Run - December 6, 2009 Another toy run was held in Albany on December 6th. The ride started at the K-Mart in Albany, which conveniently offered a discount for bikers buying toys or Christmas decorations. A smaller town with smaller group, but just as much enthusiasm as the previous day s event. The short route ended up at the Eagle s lodge in downtown Albany where the Eagles lavished the riders with a fantastic lunch. Bob 6

11 Bell Ringing Well this year was a challenge! Our first place was the Post Office in Silverton. That didn t work out well, as they would not allow us on the property & we would have had to stand out on the sidewalk by the street. We picked up our kettle etc. and went over to Ace hardware and did our time there. We almost froze to pieces, as this year we weren t allowed inside. That sucked!!!! Second place was at the Sky Bridge in the Salem Center. After we finally found the correct one--there was another fella there and his kettle said 10-2 Ours said Anyway he told us that we could leave and come back at 2:00--NUTS TO THAT!! I called the new gal Laura and explained the situation. she told the other fella to go home- -as we were volunteers. They would much rather have volunteers than paid people. Oh yes we also saw Bill (Marsha was with the kettle) they were at another Sky Bridge. While by the Food court they had a little cubicle that you could go and get your picture taken--used to be 50 cents. We decided to do that as it was quite interesting they draw your portrait and the ones we saw were great. $5.00 later we got the WORST picture I have ever seen of both of us. I think it is smashed down under a bunch of stuff in the pick up. Soo if you ever think of doing it--don t bother!!!!! Third place was Roth s in Silverton. We got there at almost 4:00 and the guy said oh you were supposed to be here at 2:00. Well I had changed the date, so who knows whom made the mistake on the time--it could have been me. Anyway the guy was NOT wanting to leave. I could have called Dan & he probably would have been sent home--after all he did do our hours already. Instead I told Dan that we would just take the kettle and go back to Ace hardware, which we did. Another messed up freezing day. Fourth and final one was once again at Roth s in Silverton, this time I was ready to argue about the time, and no-one was even there!! We even got to stand inside this time, and that sure made a big difference We had a pretty good time and talked and joked with a lot of people. I m sure we did pretty good this time, as the other places were lousy at donating. Just out of curiosity I asked one of the guys--he had a guitar about how they worked -paid people. He said that the first year he worked as a volunteer, and I guess they have to bring in so much money or they d be out of a job. Also I guess the people that bring in the most get the better places and shifts. I guess no matter how much or little money we brought in, it was more than they would have gotten without us. 13 SAFETY OFFICER S FOOD FOR THOUGHT First of all I want to take this opportunity to wish all a prosperous and safe I want to begin where I left off at the December meeting when I said that I would preach common sense What I wish to do is to take the I out of this position and just be a messenger for the group. Besides some of the specific responsibilities that come with this assignment, I invite all of you to be safety officers. Let s begin this year with some winter conditioning: in what condition is my bike, my safety clothes, and me? Are all items ready to go? Well let s start with us. Have you been watching too much TV, sports, or playing those new video games? Ok so we are not as active now as we will be during peak riding season. Maybe we need to do some exercise. Cardiovascular is always good. I am thinking specifically about the muscle groups used for riding. Try stretching exercises for the back, hip flexors, and leg muscles. Squeezing a tennis ball to simulate throttle and clutch movement will help. Being in some kind of good riding shape helps eliminate soreness and improve stamina so we can really enjoy the ride. Let s take care of us first. Can I find my riding clothes? Ok I found them and they have shrunk! Well let s think about some areas of the previous paragraph. How about the push away from the table exercise? I know about this because every new baseball season I will have to face the shrunken umpire uniform syndrome. Inanimate clothing does not shrink, with the usual exceptions of course. Leather may need to be re-stretched a bit and that may be an easy remedy. Has the padding inside the new type Kevlar riding gear shifted and or is not in the correct positions? What about footwear? Have you procrastinated getting the boots repaired? Is the helmet ok or did it bounce off the bike onto pavement a couple of times last year? Gloves and eye wear also need to be found and examined. Now, we should know where the bike is. When you get all outfitted for that ride and you get on the bike, turn on the ignition and no indicator or driving lights illuminate you may sense that there could be a problem. You push the starter and the iron horse regurgitates, sputters and may even make some intestinal guttural sounds. You have a problem. You are able to jump start the machine. After an initial warm up off you go. You take it easy and things seem to be ok. You have to stop for a stop light and when it turns green out goes the clutch and you almost drop the bike because for some reason the engine failed to keep running. You restart without a jump but this engine is fighting to stay alive. How old is the gas? What could we have done to help our bike stay is shape? Battery tender, fresh gas, or maybe some additive to reduce the amount of water in the tank? Yep all of the above. Even in the garage a battery needs help staying charged, especially as it ages and unwanted water can get into the gas tank. TIDBIT: saddlebags can never hold everything you want, but they CAN hold everything you need. Jim Johnson Begin each day thinking, Let the adventure begin!
