Secretary s Report June 3, 2016 A moment of silence for a friend and brother from California..."Desert Don" was brutally killed in a home invasion. Guests: Jim and Julie Borgealt from Muskego. Former member Paulette Hamil has applied again for member reinstatement. Our new member, Gene Heugin was also in attendance. Welcome! Board in attendance: President - Bob Lannin, Vice President - Becky Policht, Substituting as Secretary - Jeff Bacon, Moral Support and taking the blame for hand written attendance sheet- John Policht. July President s message Summer is finally here! I hope everybody is having a great time. This past weekend, I had the pleasure of manning the Wisconsin BMW Club booth at the 4 th Annual Vintage and Custom Bike Show at Schlossmann s BMW. The weather was great the bikes were better. There was more interest in our club than I expected. People wanted to know about us and what it took to become a member. Who knows maybe we ll score some new members. Many rally fliers went too. Thanks to all the members that came out. Speaking of Thank You s, Thank You to the crew that showed last Friday to move all of our rally stuff from Chula Vista to Camp Wawbeek. I think it s in a nicer location, if you can believe that. Chula Vista has been most gracious to us with the extended storage. They will leave in place the rally discount for rooms booked by rally-goers. They do need to mention the rally. Fiftyfive rooms have been blocked. We are still looking for rally volunteers, check your to see new ways to sign up. We will be meeting on July 1st at the VFW. I hope everybody going to Hamburg, NY has a great time and a safe trip. HEY NEW MEMBERS! Feel free to sign up to lead a ride, it s a good time. President s Report: Bob reports the amount in our in our account. Mike Cohen was in Massachusetts celebrating his son's 50th. Bob thanks Schlossmann s BMW for their continued generous support of our club. We had a table set up June 18th at Schlossmann s Vintage Bike Show promoting the club and the New Dells Rally. Mona has arranged to send our news letter to Schlossmann s BMW and they have agreed to print and present them to customers on the counter. We again appreciate the terrific work Mona is doing as editor of the newsletter. MOA Report - Brian Manke-The MOA move is complete to the BMW Group HQ in South Carolina. Brian also reports that The Paul Thorn Band will head-lining Das Rally in Hamburg, NY. Brian will be managing the oil change booth at the national rally so stop by to say hey. RA Report - Karen Jacobs-The admission for the RA National Rally at Laguna Seca Raceway in Monterey, CA will be $26 for RA members & about $45 for non-members. Camping is an additional fee of $61.Peter Nettesheim will be at the rally with his vintage collection. August AMA -no report New Dells Rally Report - Brian Manke-The Camp Wawbeek rally preregistration form is now on our website. Sat. night food and the beer vendor are all set up and ample fire wood is cut and split. We did not do a group mailing this year due to high cost but we have business cards printed. Please see Brian if you can carry some for distribution to all potential rally attendees. Chula Vista will be holding a number of rooms at a special rate again this year for rally goers. Tour Directors: The tour director for May was not in attendance so no ride report but Ed Boskamp did take a ride, a bus ride, in Munich Germany, to see the BMW R&D center. He made sure that any BMW quality issues would be promptly addressed. See Ed if you have any problems with your bike. Meeting adjourned. Submitted by Jeff Bacon

Hi Everybody! Plans for the rally are coming along. We had seven members up for moving day Jeff B., Bob L., Mike C., Jimmy G., Jim G., Bob R., and myself, along with future member Alex (Bob R.'s grandson) and Heidi, our Easter Seals liaison for a total of nine. We arrived at Chula Vista between 2:30 and 3 on Friday to inventory and pick up our rally supplies. Heidi had her hands full trying to inventory and document our supplies amidst our moving boxes and shrink wrapping them for travel to Easter Seals. We met Mike Kaminski, the owner of Chula, and rest assured we are leaving on good terms. Mike was pleased to hear our new location is not only still in the Dells, but will benefit Easter Seals Wisconsin. Basically, everyone is happy with the decisions that have been made. Chula will continue to reserve a block of rooms for our hotel guests. Mike Cohen is talking with them about the potential of door prizes and possible water park passes. We meandered over to Easter Seals fully loaded around 4 p.m. Our new storage location is better than we hoped for! We have space in their warehouse that is accessible WITHOUT a forklift! No more rally registration filled with boxes and boxes. Now, when we are running low on mugs, we can send a runner to get another box. As for the inventory, let's just say we will only be ordering tea and coffee this year. We have ample rally mugs to get us through another rally. And four boxes of soup supplies should allow us to include baked beans with our hot dogs on Friday night at a nominal expense. Thanks to our volunteers, the move went smoothly and we were headed out for beer and burgers around 5:30. Moving ahead, we need a few more volunteers. Mona has volunteered to head up the Coffee Committee (24/7 beverages) and could use a co-chair. We also need to put together a sign committee to determine our needs for and make sure things are posted according to our plans. Contact me if you re interested in stepping up to help the club. Sharon is working on getting us contracts for the pig roast and with the Lion's Club for serving beer. She is also getting us insurance. We do not qualify for AMA event insurance. Posters and pre-registration forms are at three WI dealers and one Iowa dealer. Plans are in the works for getting them to an Illinois dealer too. Rally Update Mona is contacting all the clubs in our region to have our form and/or link for the pre-registration form in their newsletters and/or on their websites. Bob L. went to the motorcycle show at Schlossmann's. He really talked up the rally, handed out registration forms and cards, and marketed our new location. Feedback was positive! As per a vote at our last meeting, all future rally materials will include that this rally will benefit Easter Seals of Wisconsin. As you share rally information, let folks know that Easter Seals does a lot to assist those with disabilities, as well as our Veterans! Other feedback heard here and there includes someone passing by a group of campers at the MN rally and overhearing excitement regarding our new location. I believe the exact quote was I think we need to give the Dells rally a try again. Bedroll space is filling up faster than we are getting preregistrations. Bob R. has reserved the Raymond house. I have a room in the Castle which is on the national list of historic landmarks I've never stayed at a historic landmark before. Two rooms are still available in the Castle: one sleeps 3-5, the other 4-7, both on the second floor. Ample dorm room space is also available. All bedroll space money goes to the Easter Seals General Fund. So while it's still early, we have two pre-regs and about twenty bunks reserved. If anyone is interested in bedroll space, contact Heidi via the information listed on the registration form. I will be hosting a rally planning meeting and summer picnic at my house on Sunday, July 31 to ensure we have all our i's dotted and our t's crossed. I know there are some that don't believe this is necessary, but we only get one-shot to make a great first impression of our new location. And I'd rather find out we missed something the end of July than on Sept. 9th. We'll eat at 2 p.m. I'll have brats and/or burgers on the grill. Please bring a dish to pass and your own beverages. Meeting will follow. That's all I've got right now. Hope to see you at the July meeting, & if not, I'll see you in New York! And come September, this club is going to do something GOOD in the Dells! 5 Most people in the Wisconsin BMW Club know Tim, they just don t know they him. Tim is our Webmaster. He volunteered for this position and got voted in because everyone thought he looked like the youngest guy therefore, he must know something about computers. He does know a little, but knew nothing about being a webmaster. It s been a learning experience which Tim s enjoying. Tim likes to learn new things and felt it was a great opportunity. His main fear is that he would mess something up, but Tony has been very helpful. Tim is riding a 1989 K100 RS. He also has a 1985 R1100 RS that needs some work, just some gaskets and stuff. He had a Yamaha in his early 20 s and wasn t riding it very much so he got rid of it when his daughter was young. Now the daughter is all grown up and out of the house, with his wife s encouragement, it was time to look for a motorcycle. He found his bike on-line and loves it. He s had it about five years. About a year and a half after he bought it, he found out about the Dells Rally. Someone had seen him in the parking lot at Fleet Farm and asked him if he went to the Dells Rally. He didn t know anything about it. Our ever-resourceful web-master, got home and went online and got more information. They attended the Rally and met a whole bunch of likeminded people. These people said yeah, they go on rides. He thought, yeah, I love to do that! Hence, two rides and two meetings later, he was voted in as a new member. He was also voted in as webmaster. That was a win-win for the club, and a win-win for Tim. Tim really enjoyed Tom Stresing s ride to Rushing Waters. The roads were beautiful. They were great roads. They were just so secluded. They looked like Meet the Members Tim Koester deep-woods roads with all these trees and houses scattered throughout. They were real nice and windy, not busy. It was just great. But Tim also likes going to the Slimy Crud, on the Dick Burton rides. These are more spirited rides and those are kind of fun too! Tim has been married to Shelley for 26 years. They moved from the northwest suburbs of Chicago to Wisconsin about 21 years ago. Tim s father-in-law asked Tim to do some work on the weekends in Wisconsin building a building. Several months after the job was finished, the business that moved into the building needed a carpenter. Tim applied and got the job. Now, 20+ years later, their daughter has finished college and is out of the house. She has a job downtown and wants to start riding a bike. Tim s words of advice to his daughter, You can t be cautious enough with everything and everybody around you. No one is looking out for you except you. Being cautious is the most important part of Safety. Always have the gear on. NO ONE IS LOOKING OUT FOR YOU, EXCEPT YOU. BEING CAUTIOUS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF SAFETY Submitted by Mona

June Ride A Trout Named Kilgore: The Final Chapter The day dawned like any other, but a few intrepid souls knew it was not like any other. Every decision they d ever made, every action they d ever executed, every breath they d ever taken, had led them directly to this day, this hour, this moment, this location, this Adventure of a Lifetime! The tension was palpable in the Black Canyon Coffee shop. Spectators kept a respectable distance from the Adventurers as they lined up at the restrooms to lighten their loads, then gathered eagerly around their dashingly handsome ride leader. They hung upon his every word, entranced by the passion with which he imparted his pre-ride instructions. And then... We were off! With a song ( Chattanooga Choo-Choo ) in our hearts, and, like the knights of old(e) riding into the sunset (which is a difficult thing to do at 8:30 in the morning--unless you re a BMW rider). We followed our dashingly handsome ride leader as he wove majestically through the flora of southeastern Wisconsin, emerging at last onto the parking lot of the Trout House at Rushing Waters. After parking with military precision, we entered the restaurant through the entrance, there being no other viable way to get in. The restaurant staff, comprehending the import of this visit, was unusually attentive to our needs, going so far as to keep us well away from their other customers, to make sure none of our cash was counterfeit, and to count the silverware before we left. The food was excellent, the setting was lovely, and we all had such a good time that we released the hostages without even bothering to negotiate with the SWAT team. After the group hug and two choruses of Kumbaya, we went our separate ways, with visions of our dashingly handsome ride leader dancing in our heads. Indicted as co-conspirators were Miro Sapozhnikov, Mark and Tina Doggett, Kristoffer Johnson, Tim Koester, Jeff Bacon, Pat and Linda Stauss, Doug and Gina Twing, and camp follower Jim Wiskerchen. Driving the getaway car was Michele Stresing. They ll plead not guilty, of course, but their alibis won t hold up. Submitted by Tom Stresing Fish Fry Riders True to form, shortly after the newsletter was sent to everyone, I found the list of riders for Ernie s Fish Fry. It was exactly where I looked for it so many times. Rider include: Ernie Grill, Dennis & Wendi Pipkorn, Dave Kurth, Bob (and Alex) Reitberger, Karen Jacobs, John Archer, Virgil Weber, Doug Twing, Dick Burton, Tim Koester, Gene & Brenda Huegin, Andy Pretzl, Dave and Gail Henderson, Mona Rihn, and Bob Preuss.

Signing up to Volunteer at the Dells just got easier We are going to use SignUp Genius this year to help manage and recruit volunteers. This is a very widely used signup site that a lot of schools, scout groups, etc. use. They also never send you any sort of unsolicited or anything. Committee Chairs need to get the following information to Sharon in order for her to create the document: the Area (i.e. Beverages), Number of People Need, Date, and Shift Times. Then anyone who wants to volunteer will be able to go to the site, check where volunteers are needed, then the Committee Chair and Sharon with the above information. Anyone who has already volunteered will be on the schedule. These sheets will then be printed for the Rally. Here is what an example of what the signup would look like: I will be sending an invite to everyone in the club to volunteer. That way if you can't make any meetings you can still participate. Thanks, Sharon Submitted by Mike Cohen

I am going to continue my 4th of July tradition by riding to the Unique Café in Boscobel for breakfast. I always go on my day off from work so this year it actually falls on Monday the 4th. I will be leaving the BP in Palmyra at 6 a.m. as we did last year. After breakfast I will ride up to Soldiers Grove and then back home. Plan on a 400 mile day. I eliminated the gravel roads that I normally travel so I don't scare anybody off. Well I went for a pre-ride Saturday to eliminate the gravel roads from my Boscobel route. The route there will be about 150 miles with a biobreak/gas stop at about the half way point. See you on the 4th.
