Yes, it's a week later but I'm hoping for no snow this year. Since Schlossmann's BMW has committed to being a major sponsor to this year s rally I thought we would start the ride from there. So, we will meet at 9:30 leave at 10:00. I see we have a rather large contingent basking in the sun at the Pirates rally in Key West. Thought I'd make it this year. Don't ask me for bail money I spent the money on tires. (Anyone have a tire mounter and balancer?) I have once again been reminded not to take anyone or any day for granted. Take a minute to appreciate your family and fellow riders. I'm sure Mike C. will be looking for outstanding dues and Wild Goose tickets. What would we do without him? Thanks Mike! See ya soon, Bob. The draft was shared. It was decided it should not contain the rally date, but to read, Do the Dells Again! Held Annually the weekend after Labor Day. It was also decided to remove Camp Wawbeek. Club members thought it was a good idea, but requested Camp Wawbeek be removed as at some point in the future, we may have to change locations. Top now reads simply Wisconsin Dells BMW Rally, with the bottom providing the clubs website address.

Rally Update by Brian Manke We aren't going to have a rally planning meeting this month, but things are progressing. Keep your eye out for updates on the Facebook Volunteer page as well as under the Recent Topics tab > 2017 Rally for a Reason on the club website forum. I asked Heidi to see if she could offer a hand to Mike and Tim since the mail-in preregistration form wasn't working right. This was essential for us to be listed in the event listings for the MOA, RA, and Airhead websites which link back to our site for folks to get the information. While the mail-in form is still troublesome in the dropdown menu, it can now be downloaded directly from the Rally Information page. If someone tells you they are having trouble, direct them to the information page. And yes, our rally information is live on all three sites. Thank You s Christine Ledezma, Social Media Chair, who got our social media up and running by posting the rally as a Facebook Event. From the event page, you can click Share > Invite friends. This will pull up your FB friends list and allow you to invite your riding friends. Jim Guthrie, Self-Led Rides Guide chair, will be looking at his GPS and maps to put together some nice routes. If you have a favorite road in the Dells area, or within reasonable riding distance, please share that info with Jim. To all those who volunteered at previous meetings, agreed to continue as a chair, and/or added items to their list of chair duties and are now wearing more than one hat. We are currently in need of a door prize chair. Until one is found, everyone needs to be thinking about getting door prizes. Heidi is willing to coordinate. She has a list of companies she's contacted and added those Christine has checked with. If you've made a request, or there is a company you'd be willing to contact, please check-in with Heidi so we don't bombard the same establishment. Remember, this doesn't have to be strictly MC-related merchandise. Gift certificates to chain outlets or online retailers work too. Think Starbucks. Our next concern is Rally Set-up and Tear-down. So, here's the plan Everyone is on set-up and everyone is on tear-down. We'll keep a list of duties and tasks at/near registration with a sign-in sheet. Set-up: Upon arrival, check the set-up list. (Don't assume if you arrive at 5 p.m. Friday that everything is all done. Last year folks were scrambling to set up the music hall while the band was trying to load in.) We'll have a column for the 'take charge' person and space for others who jump in with assistance to sign in. Upon completion, we ask the 'take charge' person to initial the task completed. You can assume anything with a 'take charge' person not marked completed is underway. Jump in and help. Tear-down: As soon as you're up and running on coffee Sunday morning, check the duty list and jump in. Sign in to 'take charge' or assist. Again, we're asking the person taking charge to initial when completed. We don't want volunteers running around only to find that the task was completed an hour ago. As always, it's up to the board to decide if rally volunteers will get a partial registration fee reimbursement. This year, should it be a qualifying cash-back year, it's essential that you sign in when volunteering. It's essential you volunteer. We will not have a rally meeting in May due to the Fish Fry. We would like to remind you that Easter Seals Camp Clean-up Day is May 13 and club members are invited to come and help during whatever time best fits in their schedule. We're also invited to spend the night. For those of us going up, this will be a time to get nagging questions regarding the physical camp answered. Heidi and I will put together a list of questions and/or concerns in the May newsletter. See you Friday, April 7 th, at the Meeting!

Patina Spring, and a young man s fancy turns to thoughts of his motorcycle collection. As does a young woman s. Well, the young woman would have thoughts of her own collection, since she doesn t know the young man and therefore cares not a whit for his motorcycles. Heck, they don t even live in the same state. Even if they did meet, she would be disgusted with his Who Farted? hat, and he d think her sister was prettier. It s one of those situations where you d write Maybe next time when they wanted to know if you would attend their wedding. But I digress. I ve been sneaking peeks under the covers of my bikes and dreaming dreams of rides past and rides to come. And rides that will never happen but are still fun to dream about. And rides that did happen but not the way I remember them. And rides that didn t happen but I remember them anyway. All those dreams and not one nightmare--quite an accomplishment. Over the winter, I ve taken the time, as always, to review the pictures of places I ve visited, and there ve been a lot; 43 states and 7 provinces (I d have had 44 states, but I refused to go to Rhode Island, because it s not really an island, and that s a scam for which I won t fall). I always reread a how-to book, e.g., Total Control or The Upper Half of the Motorcycle, and my owner s manuals (I didn t remember how much I can forget). And maps...what would a motorcyclist do in the winter without maps? The riding suit is washed and eager for the wind. The bikes need only the covers and chargers removed, and perhaps some air in the tires. Everything s ready! Except me. I haven t been in the saddle since Thanksgiving weekend. You would say I m rusty; I would say I ve achieved a lovely patina. Either way, some serious practice is necessary before I really begin to ride. Hey! Look! Already I ve gotten to the point of this, and I m only on the third paragraph. The point is, one cannot learn to ride a motorcycle by riding a motorcycle. It takes deliberate practice--of one thing at a time, with the correct technique. Spend a little time just with braking, then move to shifting, then tight turns, or whatever needs to be worked upon. Did you notice back there where I mentioned correct technique? If you practice these things improperly you ve just turned a bad idea into a bad habit, and increased your risk. An example: after riding for 18 years with self-inflicted knowledge, I took an MSF class and discovered that I was fascinated with the road about 30 feet in front of me (that was only the worst of many errors). It took several weeks of effort to force my head up to look far enough ahead. But every spring, when I first get a bike out, that old habit creeps out and I catch myself looking down. It s an easier fix now, but it still must be a fix. So, how do you know you re using the correct technique? See a professional. Often. I do. Tom Stresing P.S. I d have written more, but they re having an event at the village park to get contributions for the new pool, and I m going to stroll down there with a couple of glasses of water. Submitted by Glen Bishop

Passed Out by Tom Stresing Part 3 of a Series September 11. The fifteenth anniversary of the attacks. Lots of remembrances on the news as we packed up. I recalled everything about it. America came together that day, people helped each other without checking for skin color first, legislators dropped the petulant teenager act and became statesmen...and look where we are now. Sad. Anyway, off down the Million Dollar Highway, which could have been a LOT of fun if it wasn t for the RVs and big trucks in our way. Car drivers were pretty good about using the pullouts, but some of those behemoths didn t have room and probably couldn t afford to lose momentum. Still, the scenery was, I ll say it, fantastic. We went over Coal Bank Pass and Molas Pass, had breakfast in Silverton, then headed over Red Mountain Pass to Ouray. Junction via CO 145 and 141. This route is not marked as scenic in my atlas. The person who failed to mark it as scenic should be pilloried! For most of the way we were either in a canyon surrounded by red rock or on top of a canyon looking down on red rock. We stopped for lunch in Naturita (it s a city! I thought it was some kind of South American rodent), gassed up and got back on the road. It was 100 degrees when we got our Holiday Inn Express in Grand Junction with an excellent Italian restaurant just across the parking lot. I won t tell you what I had in case my doctor reads this, but it was wonderful, or, as Walter the waiter would say, fantastic.. We turned west over the Dallas Divide and south to Telluride. The ride there was great fun, including the sight of a herd of elk near the road. The ride in there was not great fun. Telluride has some kind of festival every weekend, so the place was mobbed, and we were quickly down to walking speeds. A U-turn got us out and on our way to Grand September 12. Headed for Colorado National Monument, a steep twisting climb to the top of the mesa. We saw three bighorns running across the road. They looked a lot like chipmunks to me, but the sign said it was a bighorn crossing area...so they were bighorns. The road was VERY close to the edge and there was nothing to keep us from going over, not a good place to make a mistake. Glancing in my mirrors, I saw that Jim was trying as hard as I was to stay near/on the centerline. We were grateful for all the scenic lookouts so we could actually take our eyes off the road for a while

saw. We can only use them to trigger our own memories. We looked unsuccessfully for a motel in Green River, WY, so had to turn west to Little America. Riding directly toward the sun for that twenty miles or so, at 80 mph, was pretty scary. Then a fun twisty ride down from the mesa and headed north on CO 139 over Douglas Pass to Rangely. Lunch at the Main St. Cafe, where they have a whole new outlook on fast food. It took almost three-quarters of an hour for our burgers to arrive. Good thing they weren t crowded. Still, very nice people, so it wasn t an unpleasant wait. Out of Colorado and into Utah, heading for Dinosaur National Monument. Finally, out of Colorado--what a nothin state! Nothing but great roads, awesome vistas, constantly changing topography, and friendly folks. And now Utah; I don t know if they do this all over the state, but where we were there were signs saying what kinds of fossils were found in that particular area. Very nice. Dinosaur National Monument was a treat. They ve partially excavated a hill, exposing lots (really, lots) of dinosaur bones, then they built a structure around it to preserve the site so we amateurs can see what they found and how they found it. It must have been exciting to have been part of the discovery team. The ranger pointed out something else I didn t know; the Rockies in Utah line up east to west, while everywhere else they re north to south. I have to stop talking to rangers, they make me feel dumb. September 13. West on US 30 into ID, then north along the Snake River to Jackson, WY. It seemed as if all the deciduous trees along the Snake had already donned their fall colors, enhancing the scenery. How sweet of them to do that for us. Jackson was its usual bustling self. We parked at the town square and walked through some of the incredibly expensive shops, got an ice cream cone, mounted up and headed for our cabin at Grand Teton National Park. Twenty miles from Colter Bay we could smell the smoke from the forest fire between the Tetons and Yellowstone. The road between the parks was closed just past Colter Bay but we were OK where we were. We moved into our cabin, got some laundry started and walked over to the restaurant for a great meal. That night it rained for the first time in that area since June 1. Heavy rain on the cabin s metal roof was LOUD and woke us often, but we hoped the rain would help with the fire so we could get to Yellowstone. Please contact me with your beginning mileage. This will be used to calculate the club rider with the highest mileage and the average mileage. The only way to win is to give me your beginning mileage. Thanks Mona rrrihn@yahoo.com or We didn t stay too long, as some of the tourists were staring at me like I was part of the display ( Look! This one s still moving. ). North on US191 to Flaming Gorge and around the west side. It was overcast by then, so our pictures didn t do justice to it. In fact, none of the pictures that we took anywhere on the trip were able to capture perfectly what we
