1 Before it was autumn or fall, it was harvest, the period of gathering in crops. Harvesting, reaping, picking, and collecting. The time of year when crops are ripe and ready to be gathered. To me it is intimate gatherings of friends as opposed to crops, and enjoying slow-cooked warm meals with a hot apple cider. The season is soaked with brilliant color, crisp weather, and snuggly attire. It is the perfect example of goldie-locks, when the weather is not too cold or too hot, but just right. So take those long walks and enjoy the transition of seasons. With this change of season, our Lodge is also going through a transition. Lodge Brooklyn has merged with Lillehammer Lodge and we are now united as one. Let us snuggle down with our new members and friends, share a few warm meals, stories, tales, and ideas. We hope to introduce additional member meeting opportunities, like meeting in Manhattan for lunch at the Scandinavia House. It is also the perfect time to gather and attend other events happening within our community. I personally love all the Scandinavian Christmas Fairs as well as all the craft and church fairs during this time of year. I have added to this a few events happening during these months and perhaps a few members of our Lodge will go together as a group to these events. Introduce yourself, as well as our Lodge, to others and invite them to our meetings, the holidays are right around the corner. For some this can be the hardest time of year, they may be alone or feeling alone, what a welcoming feeling they will have when they can feel the comfort of all our members for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Can you smell the fall? The apples? The apple cider? I hope the picture conjures up warm and fuzzy feelings and memories. I hope your mind is taking you down this colorful trail and you can really smell the leaves! I recently returned from a business meeting in Denver. While there, I joined District 6 Trollheim lodge for a walleye fish dinner. What made it better is that I was able to reconnect with Kaye Wergedal, District 6 Public Relations Officer. Kaye is a former District 3 member who was instrumental in our Albany convention. Kaye went out of her way to point out the beautiful Colorado sights I should see. I felt right at home and would not hesitate to go there again. In fact, I would feel comfortable attending any Sons of Norway lodge event. Why is that? That feeling of connection is so hard to explain. You have to experience it. How do you experience it? Attend lodge activities, in your lodge, your zone, other zones, the District, other Districts events and make connections. That feeling is among the best things about Sons of Norway! Equally important is how we make our new members feel (and we are getting new members). Make a special effort with new members; a kind word, a heartfelt welcome, include them. They will never forget how you make them feel. Always remember what brought us together in the first place and share it with newcomers. We will be entering the holiday season soon. 4 Page 4 lodge Brooklyn september meeting Our September Meeting Notes... We welcomed Lillehammer lodge members to Lodge Brooklyn. We are now united as one. Sandra Fisher, Vice President of Lillehammer, came forward to introduce herself, members in attendance, and a brief history of Lillehammer Lodge. We look forward to the new ideas and adventures to come from this union. Torun Reduto from Zone 1 is in charge of coordinating the baking and delivery of 3,000 cookies for the Convention. We have been asked to help in this task. All volunteers welcome. Alice, Njål, and Elaine will go to the 75th Anniversary for Nor-Bu Lodge as Lodge Brooklyn representatives. Alice informed us that the tickets for Troll Lodge s 50th Anniversary have been sold out. DJ Sean LaFleur shared his passion of Scandinavian Vinyl Scandinavian Heritage Music with a breadth of Scandinavian Music from the 1920s to the 1990s. He gave us a fantastic taste of music and many members as well as guests took to the dance floor. We look forward to having him again in the future! Lodge Brooklyn is still looking for people to fill posts within our Lodge, Secretary being the most important at this time. We would appreciate any help in this area, even if it is only temporary. *Please save used postage stamps for Tubfrim. Cut the stamps from envelopes with scissors, leaving a 1/4" margin of paper around the stamp for ease of handling. Picture post cards should be left whole. Tubfrim also collects used telephone cards. Bring the stamps to our meetings and give to Alice Svege. The money realized from the sale of these stamps will benefit disabled children and youth in Norway. Everyone is up dancing the day away!!! So much fun!

8 Page 8 lodge Brooklyn, est It is our Lodge s intent to help preserve the traditions and history of the Norwegian and American Norwegian culture. Our Lodge sits in a unique place, near the bridge that connects these two countries. Many of those who came from Norway in the 1900s landed in Brooklyn, and several of these families stayed for generations raising their children, and then their American-born grandchildren. Woven into our history are both sides of the story. Where we come from, and what it was like for our relatives to live in full communities together in America. Lodge Brooklyn has a reputation amongst other Lodges of the Sons of Norway as being one of the most fun, down to earth, and lighthearted groups within the organization. We always have a good time as we gather and share past memories and create new ones in a fun, warm, and welcoming environment. farikal (lamb + cabbage stew) Serves 6 4 1/2 lbs. lamb meat cut in large pieces 4 1/2 lbs. white cabbage cut in large wedges 5 tsp. black peppercorns 3 tsp. salt 1 3/4 water 1/2 cup flour Mix flour and lamb, flour will help thicken stew. Pour water into a large casserole pot. Layer lamb followed by cabbage, peppercorn, and salt. Repeat this process until every ingredient is used. Bring to a boil, then cook low and slow for 2 hours.
