1 Hovedstad Posten Volume 44, Issue 2 February February 27th Meeting- Early Start 6:30 Board Meetings Third Tuesday of the Month at 5:30 Subway Cleveland Ave & North St All members are invited Regular Meetings September May 4th Monday each month at 7:00 PM Columbian Hall 6794 Martin Way E Olympia, WA Need directions? Have a question about an upcoming meeting or event? Contact Linda Fialkowski Next Meeting February 27th 6:30 PM Fra Presidenten Kjære venner, From the amount of rain and cold weather we ve had lately, it would seem that Punxsutawney Phil was right when he saw his shadow and predicted six more weeks of winter. We ve had a bit of everything this winter and, yes, we will appreciate it when spring finally arrives. I am looking forward to yet another term as President of Hovedstad Lodge, and I am truly appreciative of all your support and enthusiasm this past year. A special Tusen Takk to the officers who served so faithfully last year, and I look forward to working with the new and returning officers this year. We have a lot of work to do and the teamwork will prevail. Our program this month will feature David Beland and his IMovie on Norway. While this may not sound too exciting, I had the opportunity see in last fall. I really enjoyed it and was pleased when David agreed to show it at our February Lodge meeting. The movie is a bit long so we will start at 6:30 pm with sandwiches and coffee. Following the movie, we will have a short business meeting. Our 11 th Annual Norway Day is just around the corner April 15 th. I like to say the Tax Man changed the tax deadline this year so as not to interfere with Norway Day. Plans are falling into place nicely but volunteers are always needed and appreciated. The theme this year is Vikings and we will have Vikings in the lobby, in the main hall and in the grassy lot in back. Booster buttons and advance tickets are available and are an important way to offset the cost of the event. They will be available at the next meeting so be sure to pick up a few to sell to potential donors. Again this year we will be looking for cookie bakers so dig out the good ol Scandinavian cookie recipes and let s get started!! Try to keep dry and we ll see you on the 27 th at 6:30 pm. Fraternally, Joanne

For more details and application forms, contact : Linda Fialkowski, Scholarship Chair A Romantic Restoration A current restoration project taking place at Maihaugen, one of Northern Europe s largest open-air museums in Lillehammer, Norway, is generating anticipation for the project s completion. The endeavor is steeped in Norwegian culture, a bit of romance and a royal twist. Just weeks ago, the disassembled 1930s childhood home of H.M. Queen Sonja of Norway was moved from its original location at Tuengen allé 1b at Vinderen, Oslo, to Maihaugen in Lillehammer. The home is to be reassembled, furnished in an authentic manner, and opened to the public as part of a popular attraction at the museum that features homes representing each decade from the 1920s through Work is now underway to breathe life into the house, which will showcase replicated and original furnishings used from 1935 to Queen Sonja lived there for most of her childhood years, until 1968 when she married then Crown Prince Harald. According to Maihaugen s website, the home was one of the few places the couple could meet during the nine years they were dating. The house is constructed in the functionalist style, with hipped roof, horizontal cladding, windows by the corners and balconies with steel rails. Museum guests can look forward to the official opening of the project on August 29, 2018, the date of Their Majesties 50th wedding anniversary.
5 Oslo Students Guide Urban Planning Thanks to the ingenuity of a Norwegian researcher, students in Oslo are helping to shape urban development through a new cellphone app. Traffic Agent, an interactive mobile game, allows students to report challenges and obstructions along their route to school with just a few simple clicks. The idea for the app began a few years ago when researcher Vibeke Fredrikke Rørholt was approached by the city of Oslo and the Agency of Urban Development to improve the walkability of city streets for schoolchildren. Rather than using teachers or parents to funnel feedback from the kids, Rørholt proposed the most direct method going straight to the children. Since its debut in February, Traffic Agent is now used by more than 35 schools and has logged more than 5,000 reports. Users submit reports on conditions ranging from heavy traffic at street crossings, damaged pavement and unruly shrubs to broken street lamps. Reports are shared with participating schools and app analysts, but are collected anonymously and are identified only by which class the report came from. Reports are also delayed as an additional safety measure to ensure that students cannot be tracked or followed by the location of their reports. Response to the app has been positive for both the students and city planners. We just got a telephone call from a mom who said, My boy reported two days ago that a bush blocked his path to school and he couldn t see when he should cross the street. And he was so proud when the bush was trimmed a few days later. He came home and said, I did this, says Rørholt. As data is collected and problems resolved, the walkability of Oslo for adults and children alike improves. City planners are hopeful these changes will help foster a pedestrian friendly environment and encourage public transportation use as the city moves toward reducing vehicle traffic in the coming years. Norwegian Couple Serves Pizza and Coffee to Burglar Retired couple Arne and Kari Solli were awakened in the middle of the night by sounds coming from their kitchen at home in Skien, Telemark. Someone had broken in, so Kari (68) went to investigate. Catching the intruder red-handed, Kari made it to the kitchen first and shouted for Arne (70) to come to her aid. He ran into the room to find an incoherent man standing in just a t-shirt and underwear. Without hesitation, Arne angrily threw him out into the cold night. Within moments, however, he realized that the intruder seemed to have problems and that he felt sorry for him. That is when the Sollis decided to invite the burglar back in. Kari brewed some coffee and they gave the man pizza and some warm socks. Arne offered to drive him home or call the man s friends, but the man couldn t remember where he lived and barely knew who he was. Arne then called the police to have the burglar picked up. Arne Solli says that it was an odd situation. Though the intruder had rifled through drawers and taken a few things, they decided not to prosecute. As they sat in the kitchen for about an hour, Arne had to reassure the man that it was safe to stay. The Sollis felt at ease with the man, but the burglar was a bit nervous. When asked whether he d take in an intruder again, Arne said, We can t have all kinds of people running through the door we have more coffee, but we re out of pizza, he said, chuckling.
