1 September 2013 Volume 68 Issue 9 Nyheter Fra Norrøna (News from Norrøna) Sons of Norway Norrøna Lodge #50 Norrøna Lodge Mission Statement Friar Street The mission of Norrøna Lodge is to promote and preserve the heritage and culture of Norway, to celebrate our relationship with other Nordic Countries and to help each other and those in the community in time of need. Van Nuys, CA (818) Website Camp Norrøna 2013 There were 32 campers, 5 Counselors in Training, 1 camper in training and 30 volunteers. The children learned the Norwegian language, songs, dances, and information about Norway. 1

2 Ord Fra Presidenten by Ole Olson Since the last newsletter we ve had some wonderful activities and have some sad news to share. We had another wonderful Camp Norrøna, with 32 children present and alot of helpers. We had our Camp Norrøna program to close out the week with an excellent potluck that included lefse and several kinds of cookies made by our campers. The kids put on a super program in song, word and dance, plus the projects that they made were displayed. I want ot thank Charlotte Olson for coordinating this program and all the volunteers that worked long hours. I know she will be planning a meeting soon to review and start the preparations for next year. The sad news is that Harold Sletten passed away July 28. He is a long time member who was in the kitchen helping serve both night of our Lutefrisk dinner after he spends all day cooking the meatballs in preparation for the dinner. Elmer Garbe s daughter Judy, died the end of June and Charlotte Olson s sister passed away July 20. Several of our members have had to go into convalescent homes in the last few weeks and we hope they can get better to be able to go home again. We hope you all can make it to the Annual Salmon and Hot Dog Bake at the Brooks beach house on Saturday, August 25th at 1 pm. We hope to have as many of the campers come so they can see one another again. On Saturday, September 14, we have our Monte Carlo Night fundraiser for Cystic Fibrosis. We will be mailing raffle tickets for the raffle. We hope all of you can help with this and those in the area to come to our Monte Carlo Night The Central California Kretsstevne is October 4th thru the 6th at the Flying Flags RV Park in Buellton. Remember our Monte Carlo Night On Saturday, September 14, 2013 at the Lodge. I want to thank Norrøna Lodge 50 for supporting us, by letting us use the lodge for the camp. I was a little disappointed as we did not get representation from the lodge for the potluck program night. The campers put on a fantastic program and the food for the potluck was wonderful. This year we had 7 new campers. I am hoping at one of our socials or business meetings we can get some fo the campers together to perform for you. In the next few weeks I will be setting up a meeting for those interested to discuss how the camp went and to start thinking about the date and ideas for next year s camp. Thank you again to everyone who made this camp possible. 3

5 Sunshine Report by Claire Ovrid Horn Sad news to report. Mary Sforzini, Charlotte Olson s sister passed away at her home in Lancaster. This was unexpected so Ole and Charlotte and granddaughter Mackenzie had to hurry home from a trip back east. A service for Mary was at Calvary Lutheran Church on Saturday, August 3, Another unexpected death was the passing of long time Lodge member Harold Sletten. He was undergoing minor throat surgery when he suffered a heart attack from which he could not recover. His 5 children are all here from different parts of the world including Thailand to comfort their mother Barbara. Elmer Garbe s dear daughter and friend to many of us, Judy Garbe passed away in June. She had many health problems over the years and had a recent bout with cancer. Helen Ballard continues to have health issues and is in a nursing home. Congratulations to her granddaughter Rachel who graduated from El Camino high school in Sacramento with honors. She will be attending CSU in Chico this fall. Gary Ovrid had had his knee replacement surgery after waiting several months. He was at a wonderful little hospital in Santa Paula where he got excellent care. He is healing nicely. Salmon and Hot Dog Beach Party at the Brooks Beach House Saturday, August 24, 2013 at 1 PM 1217 Ocean Drive, Oxnard (Silverstrand Beach) Directions: North on 101 and exit Victoria in Oxnard. Make a left on Victoria and travel West to San Nicolas. Right on San Nicolas and then left on Ocean to 1217 Ocean Drive. Bring your family and enjoy a day at the beach. Be sure and bring beach chairs, sun screen and a hat. Bring a Salad or Dessert plus any drinks you prefer. There will be Coffee and Lemonade available. RSVP by Wednesday, August 21,
