1 Greetings all! Welcome back to Brooklyn Lodge I hope you all had a great summer amongst the company of family and good friends. We re all very excited for this year and have high hopes for the future of our Lodge. It amazes me, sometimes, when I think of the fortitude of its membership throughout its history. During so many rough patches and difficult times, dedicated individuals held down the fort and kept this very special tradition moving forward. I would like to start this year off by giving thanks to everyone who has been a part of that history. Names recorded and unknown have all contributed what may now be invisible, but evident in the fact that we still stand. Life can be a lot of work, and each day can be packed with a barrage of information. Some days, everything seems to be pressing, requiring our attention and effort in ways that can make us miss what s right in front of us. Sometimes it s important to look back on life and search through our memories for unseen kindnesses things we may have taken for granted. I call those moments, and those people, my footprints in the sand. Finding a new perspective on an old friend, a memory, a moment in my own history often brings a sense of gratitude. If you look at anyone s time-line, it s amazing how one tiny little thing, a single conversation, a chance meeting or introduction caused the onset of all the rest of a life s path. Today I would like to give thanks to our Lodge s footprints, those who have come before us and kept our group alive. Here s to those who make history quietly and with no thoughts of recompense for they have truly made the world a better place. 2 Page 2 april, may & June with lodge Brooklyn Our April meeting had a theme of Swing with great music and fantastic food. We discussed the Miss Norway contest and our contribution, the Syttende Mai Parade as well as the Third District Convention. Julie and Ester represented LodgeBrooklyn at the Convention and came back with two awards for our lodge. In June we had a wonderful BBQ with great help from Dave Thorsen and said all our well wishes for a great summer to our members and guests. Once again a big thank you goes to David Nelson for following us through-out the parade and providing us with outstanding photography documenting the day. 3 Page 3 upcoming lodge meetings 3d Presidents message end of summer kick-off meeting Sunday, September 25, :00 PM Danish Athletic Club, Brooklyn Join us at our annual end of summer Kick-Off meeting. We will be serving open-faced sandwiches, sides, and desserts. The best part is that Ellen Lindstrom will be making music. Boo Bash Sunday, October 16, :00 PM Treats galore will be at hand for our Halloween hooligans. Haunting music and ghoulish vittles is not to be missed. Boo Bingo and guess how many sweets will be played. Enter the costume contest where the winner will walk away with something to put them under! Fra Presidenten, Mary B. Andersen, It is like driving a car. You do not look in the small rear view mirror to see where you have been, instead you look through the large windshield to see where you are going. International Vice-President, Ron Stubbings, used the above quote in his remarks at our 3D Convention and I love them. I will focus on those words for the next two years. Our challenge is that some things in the rear view mirror memories of our Norwegian heritage must not be forgotten and must be preserved but we must move forward and respond to bends and turns in the road ahead. How do we connect more people to that heritage? How do we strengthen the ties that already bind? We will continue to focus on membership, leadership, community and communication. There are a few committees forming to address specific aspects of each of these very important issues; if you are asked to serve on a committee, I hope you will accept. Diversity of experiences and opinions generally results in a well thought out solution. Some of the committees and their tasks include: Communication the first item to be examined is the TDT an enormous amount of effort goes into producing a monthly. Is it worth it? We have approximately 5500 members with approximately addresses; so at most we can reach 60% of our membership. But the is opened by on average, 35% of the recipients or 1,220 members which represents 20% of our membership!!! Is a monthly worth the time & effort that goes into producing it, if at most only 20% of our members open it???? is a quarterly a better alternative? Join the conversation Deb McConaghy of Norsk Carolina is heading this committee. There are many other aspects of communication and more committees will be forming. Membership our Vice-President, Kathy Dollymore, is in the process of forming three committees each of which will concentrate on a specific aspect of retaining and attracting new members. Leadership I will be working with many members throughout the District to develop leadership tools. I am thinking of videos, train the trainer sessions and more. If you are interested in helping with developing a leadership curriculum let me know! There are other committees actively at work and you will hear more about them over the next few months. Your Board can not do it alone! I am pleased to announce that Jim Dunagan, Oslo Lodge has been appointed as Publicity Director! We will be issuing a special Convention issue (both 3D and International) in the next few weeks. The 3D Board appointed the LOV Board as follows: Chair Roy Berntsen; Vice Chair Billy Karpack; Treasurer Helen Timoney; Secretary Barbara Berntsen; Marketing Director William Taylor

Our program will end with a performance by the Draken Chanty Band; a mix of crew members and professional musicians performing traditional chanty songs and Nordic music songs. There will also be a display of replica artifacts, as well as promotional items for sale. Ticket price: $10 for those 13 and older and $5 for children (12 and under). 7 Page 7 3rd district convention,ester and Julie represented Lodge Brooklyn at the 3rd District Convention this year held at Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. They came back with glowing reports and full of knowledge which they will share with us at our meeting. They also came home with two certificates for Lodge Brooklyn. The first being the Founders Certificate in recognition of gaining new members and maintaining member retention, the second a Certificate of Recognition for our Newsletter efforts. All we can say is Great Job Lodge Brooklyn, keep up all the good work, maybe the next convention we will walk away with everything! 9 Page 9 about our lodge It is our Lodge s intent to help preserve the traditions and history of the Norwegian and American Norwegian culture. Our Lodge sits in a unique place, near the bridge that connects these two countries. Many of those who came from Norway in the 1900s landed in Brooklyn, and several families stayed for generations raising their children, and then their American-born grandchildren. Woven into our history are both sides of the story. Where we come from, and what it was like for our relatives to live in full communities together in America. Lodge Brooklyn has a reputation amongst other Lodges of the Sons of Norway as being one of the most fun, down to earth, and lighthearted groups within the organization. We always have a good time as we gather and share past memories and create new ones in a fun, warm, and welcoming environment.
