I strongly remind everyone to be aware while driving as there will be additional children and adults walking or riding their bikes to school and then home again at the end of the school day. Everyone must exercise a little more patience at crosswalks, traffic lights and near the schools as the volume of pedestrians will be much higher than a usual day. Further remember always by law all children, under the age of 17, are required to wear a helmet when riding bicycles and using skateboards Please remember to always cross streets at designated crosswalks Likewise all vehicles must yield to pedestrians in designated crosswalks (it also is the law) We share our roads with cars, bicycles and pedestrians. Please be mindful of all three at all times For the safety of everyone, it would be wise to follow the above at all times, not just on specially announced occasions! Mayor s Message continues on next page... Department of Public Works will pick up the following week

Mayor s Message (continued)... The Seniors of Little Silver The Seniors of Little Silver was founded in January of 2002 by Julia Aymonier with 18 senior residents of Little Silver Point Road. Initially this group met in the Borough Hall but, as the numbers grew, they moved to the Borough owned Woman s Club on Rumson Road and Church Street. Ann Hansen, who has been a member since the early days, took over the reins from Julia Aymonier and became the first president of the Seniors of Little Silver. Ann is currently serving in that capacity once again. The club numbered approximately 35 members when she first took over in 2003 and has now grown to 67 members. One of the purposes of the club is to enhance the cultural life of Little Silver and is evident in the on going membership in the New Jersey Council for Humanities (a partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities) which presents 2 outstanding musical programs, both entertaining and informative, twice a year. This was started by President Ann Hansen. Each year the Markham Place Chorus, along with members of the band, present a fine program of a medley of Christmas songs at the Christmas party. In the spring there is a delightful excerpt from the Red Bank Regional High School play presented by members of the cast who are attending the school s Performing Arts program. Also there have been 2 celebrated art exhibits. These exhibits were sponsored by the late Bette Abel, who was Little Silver s art director for almost 50 years. This organization seeks to enhance the quality of life of seniors through monthly meetings of friends old and new, and entertaining, enjoyable and informative programs. The Club also gives contributions monthly to Lunch Break in Red Bank which daily provides hundreds of hot lunches for the needy. The Club has greatly profited from the encouragement and help from our local business owners. Membership is open to all interested seniors to join! Please feel free to contact me at any time. I can be reached at Borough Hall, ext. #119, Home or scastleman@littlesilver.org. Most sincerely, Suzanne S. Castleman Mayor, Borough of Little Silver NOTICE FROM THE POLICE DEPARTMENT Sunday, October 11, Little Silver PTO 5K Race Road closings on the following roads for the running of the race: Ridge Road, Prospect Avenue, Rumson Road, Hance Road. Roadways will be closed around 9:15 a.m. and all roadways should be reopened by 10:30 a.m. Sunday, October 18, the CROP Walk will be taking place. The Start and Finish lines are on the property of Red Bank Regional High School. Event starts at 1:30 p.m. Expect heavy pedestrian traffic on the afternoon of the 18 th along Branch Avenue, Rumson Road, and Harding Road near Red Bank Regional High School.

3 Recycling Reminders BRANCH AND LIMB COLLECTION Residents are reminded that placement to the curb of limbs/branches ends for the season in Zone 1 October 11 th ; Zone 2 October 18 th ; and Zone 3 October 25 th ; and will resume in January according to the 2010 placement to the curb schedule. UPDATE ON HOME GENERATED MEDICAL WASTE (SYRINGES AND NEEDLES/SHARPS) Syringes and needles/sharps are to be kept out of the waste stream. Many area hospitals have instituted programs for handling syringes and needles (sharps) for those qualifying as home self-care generators by supplying sharps containers which, when filled, must be returned to the hospital and a new container will be issued. There is a small deposit on the first container, after which the container and disposal service is free. The following hospitals in our area participating in this program are as follows: Riverview Medical Center (Diabetes Management Center) Monmouth Medical (Diabetes Treatment Center) Bayshore Community Hospital (Environmental Services) Some pharmacies have information on the Blue Needle Box program. Contact your pharmacist for details. LEAVES MAY BE RAKED TO THE CURB AT ANY TIME FROM OCTOBER 26 - DECEMBER 31 When raking leaves to the curb, please make sure no other debris is mixed in with the leaves. The farm site where Little Silver disposes the leaves is under strict regulations from NJ DEP. If other debris is mixed in with leaves, they will not be collected. MONMOUTH COUNTY TO ELIMINATE RECYCLING OF HOUSEHOLD BATTERIES As of October 15, Monmouth County will no longer accept household batteries (with the exception of button batteries ) at its Household Hazardous Waste Facility or at its HHW Disposal Days. This is due to reduction of toxic metals in batteries, increasing recycling costs and safety restrictions. There will be a collection bin at Borough Hall for button batteries only. Common household batteries should be included with regular household trash disposal. RECYCLING DROP-OFF CENTER The Recycling Drop-Off Center is located behind the Borough Garage on Fairview Avenue. Hours of operation: Monday - Friday 8:00 am - 2:00 pm Saturday 8:00 am - 12:00 noon Residents are encouraged to take recyclables to the Recycling Center. Please see the July 2009 Recycling Update for details on recycling. Please note the Recycling Center is closed on all Borough holidays. block for 6 ads
