1 1 June 2011 Edition Trilogy at Glen Ivy COMMUNITY NEWS General Manager Ken Gibson Assistant General Manager John Rivera Landscaping Maintenance Antonia Vizcarra Pacific Crest Lodge Blue Water Sports Club Lifestyle Manager Monica Romero HOA Office A Poem for Grandfathers. Grandfathers Are Fathers Who Are Grand Grandfathers are fathers who are grand, Restoring the sense that our most precious things Are those that do not change much over time. No love of childhood is more sublime, Demanding little, giving on demand, Far more inclined than most to grant the wings Allowing us to reach enchanted lands. Though grandfathers must serve as second fathers, Helping out with young and restless hearts, Each has all the patience wisdom brings, Remembering our passions more than others, Soothing us with old and well-honed arts. There are a range of events, which may have inspired the idea of Father's Day. One of these was the start of the Mother's Day tradition in the first decade of the 20th century. Another was a memorial service held in 1908 for a large group of men, many of them fathers, who were killed in a mining accident in Monongah, West Virginia in December A woman called Sonora Smart Dodd was an influential figure in the establishment of Father's Day. Her father raised six children by himself after the death of their mother. This was uncommon at that time, as many widowers placed their children in the care of others or quickly married again. Sonora was inspired by the work of Anna Jarvis, who had pushed for Mother's Day celebrations. Sonora felt that her father deserved recognition for what he had done. The first time Father's Day was held in June was in Father's Day was officially recognized as a holiday in 1972 by President Nixon.

3 Page 3 3 Did you Know that Windows Microsoft has a free Fix it Center. Windows: Microsoft's Fix it Center is a free beta troubleshooting program that tweaks common Windows issues, It comes straight from Microsoft It supports Windows 7, Vista and XP. The program offers a variety of categories (27, to be exact), and will give you an estimate of how long each problem will take to troubleshoot. Once you select a category, the program will take you through each situation step-by-step. The instructions are easy and clear to understand, with an easy intuitive interface. Here is a link to it. Protect your Computer from Power Outages We live in an area where our electrical power can go out at any time. Most of the time we wait and it comes back in short notice with virtually no damage done to anything. However, should you loose power when you are booting up your computer or shutting it down, the results can be devastating. You can be left with a PC that will no longer boot and that has a damaged copy of Windows. You can prevent this by investing in a Battery Backup also called an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS). These devices will allow your PC to finish a boot or shut down properly since they contain a battery that provides power to your computer during a power outage. Generally the battery will keep your computer operational for minutes which is enough time to complete a cycle or for you to save the data you were working on. Laptops don't need to be connected to a UPS since they contain their own battery. However, if you use your laptop without the battery, you can benefit from a UPS. Remove your Flash Drive Without Waiting For those using flash drives to store or transfer data on your PC, you are not supposed to remove the drive until you have click on the safely remove drive icon in your system tray. Just pulling the flash drive out may result in loosing the data stored on it. However in this time of instant everything, waiting a few seconds for the drive to be removed may seem like an eternity. Here is a way to eject the drive without corrupting the data. Here is how : 1. Right click on the flash drive either by using windows explorer or click on MY Computer. 2.Click on Hardware tab 3. select the flash drive and choose Properties 4. click on Policies Tab (you might have to click on Change Settings before Policies shows up 5. Select Optimize for quick removal This might be the default setting if using Windows 7 Maintain that PC There are things that you can do to keep your PC and your data, in good shape. Here is one of them: Back up your Data every day. If you do not have an external drive, consider buying one and using it to back up your data.

5 Page 5 5 Latin Club Ole from your Trilogy Latin Club! What a fabulous event was the Trilogy Latin Club s Cinco de Mayo CELEBRATION! We had so much fun and fellowship! As we settled in at our gaily decorated tables, we enjoyed live music being performed from table to table by the strolling Mariachi Trio, munched on chips and drank a bit of Sangria. Ole! We then enjoyed a lavish, bountiful Mexican meal followed by a floor show performed by a Children s Group from Riverside s Sol de Mexico performing school. We danced to music provided by DJ Ray Diaz, Jr. and had a fun time hoping our number would be drawn to win a great door prize. The funniest part of the evening was when some Latin Club members lined up, agreed to be blindfolded and started swinging a long pole to try to crack open the piñata that was hanging from the ceiling! Look out!!! Thanks to everyone who contributed to this evenings success. Special thanks to Event Planners Janice Walker, Susan Stevenson, Ruthie Eudy and Karen Gross who planned and provided wonderful decorations, food and entertainment. Thank you ladies! COMING UP NEXT, in conjunction with Trilogy on the Roof, is our much anticipated 4 th of July Potluck Party. We will enjoy many homemade dishes, listen to music by the band Working Poets, and have chances to win in the 50/50 raffle. Mark your calendars and let s turn out to have some fun and food with friends and neighbors. Tickets go on sale May 23 rd for only $5.00 per person. IN AUGUST we are planning a much requested trip by train to San Juan Capistrano. We will go on the train as a group but will each decide what we want to do when we get there! Some may tour the Mission, others may stroll through the shops, visit art galleries, and perhaps finish their day by enjoying the food of any one of San Juan s great restaurants. Be watching for further information... Adios from your Officers at the Trilogy Latin Club.

6 Page 6 6 Bob s Corner The simple ABC s of a Reserve Fund Let s start with the Why s, Who s and How Why s The State of California requires by Law, a Reserve Study by the BOD to collect an adequate amount of Reserve Funds to repair and or replace components of the Association that they are responsible for maintaining in a timely fashion. Who s The BOD s are directly responsible for implementing the Reserve Fund. Many use a Reserve Specialist for the Yearly Report. Trilogy has used one since the initial development. Both have inputs of use full life and costs. How Each component that has to be repaired and/or replaced in the next 30 years must be entered with the initial cost and an estimated use full life expressed in years. Each subsequent yearly report calculates the remaining life. Other Factors Several other factors must be considered such as Yearly Inflation Rate, Yearly Interest earned on Funds not spent, dramatic increases in costs such as components closely related to oil and transportation. Percent Funded There is currently no mandate from the state of California as to what percentage of actual funds should be in the Reserve Fund to cover repair/replacement costs. Some experts feel that 75% or more is adequate; others feel that it should be 100%. None believe anything lower than 75% is acceptable. Our last Survey for Fiscal year ending March 31, 2011 shows our Reserve Fund at 62.12%. For that year the consultant asked for a contribution of $26 per month but the BOD allocated only $25 out of the Operating Fund. Due to heavy expenditures out of the Reserve Fund for reconstruction of the Lake Center, expected % funded this current fiscal year, may drop to 58.02%. We are treading water now! With planned monthly incremental increases of allocation from the Operating fund to the Reserve Fund of $25 to $45.57 each year until 2021, nine (9) years from now, we will still be at a projected 70.73% funded! Actual and Possible Liabilities of our Reserve Plan Actual Missing Components Painting 1,000 feet of fencing in Modjeska Added Components Lake Center Reconstruction Components replaced before estimated use full life 2 Phone Directories Modjeska Applied Inflation Rate of 2% in Study since 2001 is not accurate. Regional rate for Los Angeles-Riverside- Orange County by the Bureau of Labor, CPI indicated for the past 10 years to be slightly over 3%. Additionally they report that for the past 80 years, it has averaged 3%. Interest rate on existing funds estimated at 2.5% is too high. BOD can only invest for a contract of one year maximum. None have been found to be over 2% For those interested in the specifics of the Reserve Study, a full Reserve Study is available with no costs involved by submitting a request for the Master Association Reserve Study.
