THE WARWICK CHRONICLE WARWICK CENTRAL SAFER NEIGHBOURHOOD TEAM COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER DECEMBER 2014 CHASE MEADOW EMSCOTE - HEATHCOTE - THE FORBES ESTATE THE PACKMORES - THE PERCY ESTATE - THE WOODLOES WARWICK GATES WARWICK TOWN INCIDENT OVERVIEW INCIDENTS RECORDED FOR THE WARWICK CENTRAL SAFER NEIGHBOURHOOD TEAM FOR NOVEMBER 2014: INCIDENT TYPE: NOVEMBER 2014 NOVEMBER 2013 OCTOBER 2014 ANTI SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR BURGLARY DWELLING (HOUSES) BURGLARY OTHER (OUT BUILDINGS INCLUDING COMMERCIAL PREMISES) CRIMINAL DAMAGE THEFT FROM MOTOR VEHICLE (TFMV) THEFT OF MOTOR VEHICLE VIOLENCE * FIGURES CORRECT AS OF MONDAY 1 ST DECEMBER 2014 CRIME OVERVIEW THIS SECTION LOOKS AT THE CRIMES OF PUBLIC INTEREST THAT HAVE OCCURRED ON THE WARWICK CENTRAL SAFER NEIGHBOURHOOD TEAM POLICING AREA, CRIMES SUCH AS BURGLARY, THEFT, AUTO CRIME AND CRIMINAL DAMAGE: BELOW IS A VERY BRIEF OVERVIEW OF THE TYPES OF INCIDENTS THAT HAVE BEEN REPORTED TO US. BURGLARIES: BURGLARIES OF ALL KINDS ARE DOWN THIS MONTH, WHICH IS NICE TO SEE. HOWEVER, WITH THE DARKER NIGHTS, IT IS VITAL TO MAKE SURE YOUR PROPERTY IS WELL LUMINATED IF YOU AREN T AT HOME, SO CONSIDER TIMER SWITCHES FOR YOUR LIGHTS, AND OTHER THINGS THAT GIVE POSSIBLE OFFENDERS THE IMPRESSION THERE IS SOMEONE IN. IF YOU HAVE AN ALARM, MAKE SURE YOU SET IT, AND IF YOU DON T, THEN IT IS SOMETHING TO CONSIDER GETTING INSTALLED. AUTOCRIME: NUMBER PLATES THEFTS ARE STILL VERY MUCH AN ISSUE, SO IT REALLY IS A GOOD IDEA TO CONSIDER ANTI THEFT SECURITY SCREWS. THESE CAN BE PURCHASED FROM ALL GOOD CAR ACCESSORY RETAILERS, USUALLY FOR LESS THAN 5, WHICH IS BETTER THAN PAYING AROUND 40 FOR REPLACEMENT NUMBER PLATES. ACCESSORIES/RICHBROOK-ANTI-THEFT-NUMBER-PLATE-BOLTS (OTHER VEHICLE ACCESSORY STORES ARE AVAILABLE.)
IT GOES WITHOUT SAYING THE PERILS OF LEAVING VALUABLES IN YOUR CAR, BUT IT IS AMAZING HOW MANY PEOPLE CONTINUE TO LEAVE HANDBAGS, SAT NAVS, LAPTOPS AND GOLF CLUBS LYING AROUND ON THE BACK SEAT JUST WAITING TO BE STOLEN. PLEASE, PLEASE REMOVE ITEMS, BECAUSE CRIMES LIKE THIS DO HAPPEN TO PEOPLE LIKE YOU, AND YOU CAN PREVENT IT. ANTI-SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR: A DROP IN THE NUMBER OF ASB INCIDENTS REPORTED THIS MONTH, ESPECIALLY AS THIS COVERS THE BONFIRE NIGHT PERIOD. THE ISSUE WITH MOTORBIKES SEEMS TO HAVE ABATED, BUT A COUPLE OF INCIDENTS WITH PROPERTIES BEING EGGED, AS WELL THE ODD NEIGHBOUR DISPUTE! A FEW CALLS ASWELL THIS MONTH RELATING TO INCONSIDERATE PARKING AROUND SOME OF THE LOCAL SCHOOLS. CRIMINAL DAMAGE: CALLS AGAIN THIS MONTH ABOUT WING MIRRORS BEING BROKEN OFF VEHICLES, WHICH IS THE REASON THE FIGURES JUMPED THIS MONTH. THEFTS: SHOPS ON THE SHIRES RETAIL PARK CONTINUE TO BE THE MOST TARGETED IN TERMS OF SHOPLIFTING, SO THE TEAM HAVE BEEN OUT AND DONE SOME PLAIN CLOTHES OPERATIONS AT PEAK TIMES TO TRY AND IDENTIFY ANY KNOWN OFFENDERS. WITH THE FESTIVE PARTY SEASON GATHERING A PACE, PLEASE LOOK AFTER ANYTHING VALUABLE IF YOU ARE OUT PARTYING, BECAUSE AFTER A FEW DRINKS IT S VERY EASY TO FORGET ABOUT HANDBAGS, WALLETS, PHONES ETC. INCIDENTS & ISSUES IN YOUR LOCAL AREA. BELOW IS A BRIEF SELECTION OF SOME OF THE INCIDENTS THAT HAVE OCCURRED ACROSS THE AREA, WARD BY WARD.. WARWICK NORTH WARD: THE BUS STOP ON WOODLOES AVENUE SOUTH HAD A WINDOW SMASHED ON THE EVENING OF 17 TH NOVEMBER 2014, AND THE FOLLOWING EVENING IT APPEARS THE SAME LADS CAM BACK TO SMASH THE REMAINING TWO WINDOWS. WE HAVE ALSO HAD A NUMBER OF CALLS REGARDING NUMBER PLATES BEING TAKEN FROM CARS. THESE HAVE TAKEN PLACE ACROSS THE WHOLE WARD, WITH NO REAL PATTERN. SOME FENCE PANELS BORDERING PROPERTIES ON TWYCROSS WALK WERE SET FIRE TO ON THE 1 ST NOVEMBER. THE HEAT FROM THE FIRE CAUSED PLASTIC ITEMS CLOSE BY TO MELT, INCLUDING WHEELIE BINS AND GUTTERING. INC 210 & 371 OF 1 ST NOVEMBER. WARWICK SOUTH WARD: ALTHOUGH THE NUMBER OF INCIDENTS HAS DROPPED, WE ARE STILL GETTING CALLS REGARDING VEHICLES PARKED ALONG THE ROAD HAVING WING MIRRORS BEING SNAPPED OR PULLED OFF. THE WORST HIT AREAS HAVE BEEN WHARF STREET, CAMPRIANO DRIVE, AND NELSON RD TOO. THE SHIRES RETAIL PARK IS STILL A MAGNET FOR SHOPLIFTERS, ESPECIALLY AS WE ARE INTO THE CHRISTMAS RUSH. HOWEVER, A WELL KNOWN AND PROLIFIC OFFENDER WAS CAUGHT FOLLOWING A RECENT VISIT TO THE RETAIL PARK, AND GOT 16 WEEKS INSIDE FOR HIS TROUBLE!! IN THE EARLY HOURS OF THE 11 TH NOVEMBER, 2 PROPERTIES ON WARWICK GATES WERE BROKEN INTO, AND THE KEYS FOR THEIR CARS TAKEN, AND OBVIOUSLY THEIR CARS TOO. INC 8 OF 11/11/14 RELATES TO THE PROPERTY ON LADY GREY AVENUE, AND INC 28 OF 11/11/14 TO THE HOUSE ON IMOGEN GARDENS. A FEW INCIDENTS OF NUISANCE BEHAVIOUR ALONG ST NICHOLAS CHURCH STREET WITH REPORTS OF
YOUTHS BANGING DOORS AND THEN DISAPPEARING INTO ST NICHOLAS PARK. WARWICK WEST WARD: A COUPLE OF THE SHOPS AT ST JOHNS HAD THEIR FRONT WINDOWS BROKEN LATE ON THE 26 TH NOVEMBER. 2 MALES WERE LATER ARRESTED FOR THE CAUSING THE DAMAGE. YOUTHS STARTED A SMALL FIRE IN THE GARAGE AREA OFF HANWORTH DRIVE ON 19 TH NOVEMBER. WARWICKSHIRE FIRE & RESCUE ATTENDED, AND THANKFULLY NO PERMANENT DAMAGE CAUSED. THE NUMBER OF SHOPLIFTING INCIDENTS IN THE TOWN CENTRE HAS DROPPED SLIGHTLY, WHICH IS ALWAYS GOOD TO SEE. A FEW CALLS TO THEFTS FROM MOTOR VEHICLES THIS MONTH. TOOLS AND HANDBAGS BEING LEFT ON DISPLAY PROVED TOO TEMPTING TO SOMEBODY. A FEW OF THESE REPORTS TOOK PLACE IN THE CAR PARK ON COMMAINGE CLOSE, WHICH IS ADJACENT TO SAINSBURY S. IF YOU HAVE ANY INFORMATION ABOUT THESE, OR ANY OTHER INCIDENTS, THEN PLEASE GET IN TO TOUCH AS SOON AS POSSIBLE ON THE CONTACT NUMBERS SHOWN ON PAGE 6. APPEALS, NEWS & UPDATES NO APPEALS FOR INFORMATION THIS MONTH. NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH UPDATES SIGNING UP AS MANY RESIDENTS AND BUSINESSES ACROSS THE AREA TO OUR NEWS ALERTS, AND THIS NEWSLETTER REMAINS A PRIORITY, AND A MASSIVE THANKS TO ALL THOSE HAVE CONTACTED SO FAR. HAVING THE FACILITY TO VAST NUMBERS OF PEOPLE IN AN AREA TO MAKE THEM AWARE OF WHAT IS HAPPENING AS SOON AS THE INCDIENTS COME IN, IS VITAL IN KEEPING THE PUBLIC INFOMRED, AND IT IS INSTANT, RATHER THAN HAVING TO WAIT TO THE END OF THE WEEK TO READ IT IN THE LOCAL PAPER, OR TO THE END OF THE MONTH TO READ IT HERE. PLEASE GET IN TOUCH BY CALLING US ON , OR BY ING WRC.SNT@WARWICKSHIRE.POLICE.UK IF YOU NEED ANY FURTHER INFORMATION. WE ARE CURRENTLY ON THE LOOKOUT FOR VOLUNTEERS TO GET INVOLVED IN COMMUNITY SPEED WATCH (CSW). WE HAVE NUMEROUS CALLS EACH MONTH ABOUT CARS SPEEDING IN AND AROUND CERTAIN AREAS OF THE TOWN, AND CSW IS AN IDEAL WAY FOR THE POLICE, ALONG WITH CONCERNED RESIDENTS, WORKING TOGETHER TO HOPEFULLY TACKLE THE ISSUES. IF YOU CAN SPARE A BIT OF TIME TO HELP KEEP YOUR STREET/AREA SAFE AND ZAP SOME SPEEDING MOTORISTS, THEN PLEASE GET IN TOUCH. WRC.SNT@WARWICKSHIRE.POLICE.UK FOR FURTHER INFORMATION ON SPEED WATCH, CHECK OUT THEIR WEBSITE: INFORMATION AND ADVICE THE WEEKS LEADING UP TO CHRISTMAS ARE THE BIGGEST SHOPPING WEEKS OF THE YEAR, AND FOR MANY
RETAILERS OFTEN ACCOUNTS FOR 70% OF THEIR ANNUAL REVENUE. STOCKING OUR HOMES WITH THE LATEST ELECTRONIC GADGETS, COMPUTERS, JEWELLERY AND MUST-HAVE ACCESSORIES IS COMMONPLACE, UNFORTUNATELY THOUGH IT PROVIDES THIEVES WITH THE PERFECT INCENTIVE TO COMMIT BURGLARIES. READ THESE TIPS TO ENSURE YOUR HOME IS SECURE OVER CHRISTMAS AND THE NEW YEAR. FESTIVE LIGHTING - BE SECURE. A COMMON MISTAKE OF MANY FESTIVE DECORATORS IS TO FEED EXTENSION CABLES THROUGH PARTIALLY OPEN WINDOWS, CRIMINALS KNOW TO LOOK FOR THIS VULNERABILITY. WHEN IT COMES TO OUTDOOR LIGHTING, OPT FOR SOLAR OR BATTERY OPERATED LIGHTS OR INSTALL OUTDOOR ELECTRICAL OUTLETS. DISPOSE OF GIFT PACKAGING CAREFULLY. REFUSE COLLECTIONS OVER THE CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR PERIOD ARE NORMALLY AT DIFFERENT TIMES. IF YOU CAN'T TAKE PACKAGING TO A RECYCLING POINT, MAKE SURE YOU ONLY PUT YOUR RUBBISH OUT JUST BEFORE THE COLLECTION AND DO YOUR BEST TO BREAK APART BOXES SO THAT THEY DO NOT ADVERTISE YOUR NEW CONTENTS OF YOUR HOME TO THIEVES! AWAY OVER CHRISTMAS - PLAN AHEAD!!. IF YOU'RE GOING AWAY AT CHRISTMAS BE SURE TO CANCEL ANY NEWSPAPER OR MILK SUBSCRIPTIONS. ARRANGE FOR A NEIGHBOUR TO PARK ON THE DRIVEWAY TO HELP CREATE THE IMPRESSION SOMEONE IS HOME. DO NOT TO LEAVE DESCRIPTIVE TELEPHONE ANSWERING MACHINE MESSAGES OR AND AGAIN MAKE USE OF LIGHT TIMERS. BE CAREFUL NOT TO ADVERTISE YOUR HOME TO BURGLARS ON SOCIAL MEDIA! ACCORDING TO ONE RECENT STUDY, SOCIAL MEDIA IS A COMMONLY USED TOOL FOR SCOUTING POTENTIAL TARGETS. SOCIAL MEDIA SAVVY FAMILIES HAVE A TENDENCY TO PUBLISH THEIR WHEREABOUTS DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON, INCLUDING ANY VACATION PLANS. THIS LETS BURGLARS KNOW WHEN YOUR HOUSE IS GOING TO BE EMPTY. UPLOADED PHOTOS OF PRICEY CHRISTMAS GIFTS CAN ALSO BE A PROBLEM AS IT BASICALLY ALLOWS BURGLARS TO GO SHOPPING JUST BY VIEWING YOUR FACEBOOK PROFILE. RECORD ANY SERIAL NUMBERS AND REGISTER THEM WITH SUCH SITES AS MOST CONSUMER ELECTRICALS HAVE A UNIQUE IDENTIFICATION CODE SUCH AS A SERIAL NUMBER OR FOR MOBILE PHONES AN IMEI NUMBER - THIS IMEI NUMBER CAN BE FOUND QUICKLY AND EASILY BY PRESSING THE FOLLOWING KEYS ON YOUR MOBILE HANDSET: * # 0 6 #. (OTHER PROPERTY MARKING REGISTRATION SITES ARE AVAILABLE) KEEP YOUR CURTAINS, DRAPES AND WINDOW BLINDS CLOSED AT NIGHT, MAKING SURE VALUABLE ITEMS ARE OUT OF SIGHT. WHEN GOING OUT FOR THE EVENING MAKE USE OF INEXPENSIVE TIMERS TO GIVE THE ILLUSION OF OCCUPANCY. SECURE GARAGES & SHEDS. MAKE SURE THAT GARDEN TOOLS OR LADDERS THAT COULD BE USED TO FORCE ENTRY INTO YOUR HOME ARE NOT LEFT LYING AROUND OR ACCESSIBLE FROM AN UNLOCKED GARDEN SHED. GARAGES ARE OFTEN TARGETS FOR BURGLARS LOOKING FOR TOOLS, BIKES AND GARDENING EQUIPMENT - MAKE SURE THE GARAGE IS SECURE AND YOUR POSSESSIONS ARE SECURED TOO IN THE CASE OF BIKES AND TOOLS. PARKING WHEN XMAS SHOPPING. DON T LEAVE PRESENTS ON SHOW IN A PARKED CAR, AS THEY COULD EASILY TEMPT THIEVES. ALWAYS KEEP CAR DOORS LOCKED WHILST DRIVING IN BUILT-UP AREAS, ESPECIALLY IF YOU VE GOT BAGS OF PRESENTS IN THE CAR. IF YOU ARE PARKING IN A MULTI- STOREY CAR PARK, CHOOSE A WELL-LIT SPACE AS CLOSE TO THE EXIT AS POSSIBLE AND AWAY FROM PILLARS. ALWAYS TRY AND REVERSE INTO POSITION, AND ALWAYS BE MINDFUL IF YOU WILL BE RETURNING TO IT AFTER DARK. PICKPOCKETS. ALWAYS KEEP HANDBAGS/WALLETS ZIPPED, AND CLOSE TO YOU TO AVOID THE RISK OF PICKPOCKETS WHO THRIVE IN A BUSY AND CONGESTED SHOPING MALL. ALWAYS BE EXTRA VIGILANT WHEN USING CASHPOINTS/ATMS. ALWAYS TRY TO BE CONCIOUS OF YOUR
SURROUNDING AND WHO MAYBE HANGING AROUND. IF IN DOUBT, USE ANOTHER BANK, AND TRY NOT TO FLASH THE CASH WHEN USING THE DISPENSER, AND BE MINDFUL WHEN PAYING FOR GOODS IN STORE, THAT YOU DON T ADVERTISE THE FACT YOU HAVE A BIG ROLL OF MONEY ON YOUR PERSON FINALLY, GOING OUT OVER CHRISTMAS.THE MOST OBVIOUS MESSAGE IS, DON T DRINK AND DRIVE. IF YOU FANCY A DRINK OR TWO, GET A CAB. IT S NOT WORTH WRECKING YOURS, OR ANYONE ELSES LIVES. KEEP AN EYE ON HOW MUCH ALCOHOL YOU ARE CONSUMING, AND ALWAYS BE AWARE OF YOUR SURROUNDINGS. KEEP AN EYE ON YOUR VALUABLES AT ALL TIMES, AND NEVER LEAVE PHONES, TABLETS OR HANDBAGS UNATTENDED. IN A CROWED BAR, THEY COULD BE GONE IN THE BLINK OF AN EYE!! TRY AND KEEP TOGETHER WITH YOUR FRIENDS OR YOUR GROUP SO YOU CAN ALL LOOK OUT FOR EACH OTHER. SCAMS. BUT MOST OF ALL.HAVE FUN THIS FESTIVE PERIOD!! START WITH THE BASIC PRINCIPLE OF IF IT LOOKS/SOUNDS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE, THEN IT PROBABLY IS! WHY WOULD SOMEONE CALL YOU OR WRITE TO YOU TELLING YOU YOU VE WON MILLIONS ON A LOTTERY YOU HAVE NEVER ENTERED, AND THEN ASK YOU TO SEND THEM MONEY SO YOU CAN GET YOUR WINNINGS?? UNFORTUNATELY THERE ARE SO MANY CURRENTLY DOING THE ROUNDS, IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO NAME THEM ALL, BUT HERE ARE SOME REALLY USEFUL SOURCES OF INFORMATION, TO HOPEFULLY HAVE A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THE TACTICS THESE TRICKSTERS USE TO GET YOU TO PART WITH YOUR MONEY. AS WITH SOME MANY OF THESE TYPES OF CRIMES, IT IS THE ELDERLY WHO ARE MOST VULNERABLE AND ARE BEING TARGETED, AND CONNED OUT OF POTENTIALLY THOUSANDS OF POUNDS. CHECK OUT WHICH NOT ONLY GIVES INFO ON CURRENT SCAMS, BUT THE TALE TAIL SIGNS TO LOOK OUT FOR IF YOU THINK AN ELDERLY FRIEND OR RELATIVE MAY HAVE BEEN SUCKED IN. THIS ONE IS A REALLY GOOD LITTLE BOOK THAT THE MET POLICE HAVE PRODUCED OUTLINING A WHOLE RAFT OF POTENTIAL SCAMS AND FRAUDS. IT IS ALSO AVAILABLE IN AN AUDIO FORMAT TOO.
