North Leverton with Habblesthorpe Parish Council Quarterly Newsletter Winter 2016 HAPPY NEW YEAR T he Parish Council would like to wish all Parishioners a Happy New Year and trust you all had an enjoyable Christmas. As the festive season draws to a close we would like to thank all those involved in the provision of the Village Christmas tree. In particular, we would like to mention Highfield s Transport for sponsoring the tree and supplying the lifting apparatus for its erection. We must also make mention of the Royal Oak for allowing us to erect the tree on their premises and supplying the electricity for the lights (not to mention the bacon butties and coffees whilst we were putting the tree up and taking it down). Thanks to everyone who helped your generous assistance ensured that a large measure of Christmas cheer was brought to the village. BROADBAND W hat is your broadband speed? Is it acceptable? Despite the roll out of Fibre Broadband do you feel it could be better? County Councillor John Ogle is already aware of the problem of slow download speeds that some homes at the edges of other villages endure. You may suffer similar issues or have problems with intermittent service. BT are committed to improving the infrastructure so that rural areas can receive superfast Broadband and Notts CC have grants to facilitate this. To this end Cllr Ogle would like to hear from any residents with broadband problems and asks that they him direct at cllr.john.ogle@nottscc.gov.uk.
REFURBISHED LIBRARY RE-OPENS ITS DOOR The old telephone kiosk has recently undergone a major refurbishment and is now back in use as the village library. The work involved the removal of all the books and shelving together with all of the glass panels before rubbing down and repainting could begin. At one stage the kiosk was the talk of the village due to it being bright pink in colour! Despite several requests to leave it that way we eventually applied its new and resplendent red top coat. Once the glass panels were re-fitted making the kiosk weather tight new shelving was installed and restocked with books. We ve even managed to repair the internal light so that the library can be used at night. Cllr Gordon White is to be congratulated and thanked for being the driving force behind this project. Likewise, we are grateful to village handy person John Taylor for undertaking the lion s share of the work. Unfortunately, a lot of the old books that were removed had suffered irreparable damage due to damp so we are asking parishioners to please help re-stock the library with a fresh supply of books that are suitable for reading by children. WEBSITE The Sturton Ward website provides a wide range of both historic and up to date information about the local area and has a section wholly dedicated to North Leverton & Habblesthorpe. Throughout 2016 the website had a total of 20,216 hits of which approximately 15% (3090 hits) were related to North Leverton. We believe this indicates that this facility is a valuable asset to the community and would encourage more people to make use of it either by viewing or by forwarding information to Cllr Sue Ferguson to have uploaded.
SORRY YOU RE LEAVING S adly, we have to report that Cllr Ian Hobbs has tendered his resignation as a Parish Councillor. Ian was a valued member of the team and will be greatly missed. This does mean that, once we have written approval from the Returning Officer at Bassetlaw District Council, we will have a vacancy to fill. If anyone is interested in joining the Council or would like more information, please speak to any of the remaining Councillors details of whom are on the back page of this newsletter. We also have to say goodbye to Bill Crowson for he too has decided to step down. Since the completion of the memorial garden in the Blacksmith s playing field Bill has, for several years, toiled away at his gardening duties in all weathers ensuring that the beds have remained weed free. Our thanks go Ian and Bill for their efforts and we wish them both well for the future. SANTA VISITS POST OFFICE S anta and his helper came to the Post Office on three occasions in December much to the delight of the children of the village, he chatted with his young visitors and gave out presents. As you can imagine he was a great success and we can only hope that he will return next Christmas, hopefully all you children will have been good girls and boys!!! POLITE REQUEST C ould we politely remind dog owners that we would rather they didn t exercise their pets on the play areas within the village or on the Blacksmith s playing field. These areas are primarily there for children to play and enjoy themselves. If you do feel the need to exercise your dog in one of these locations please ensure that it is kept on a lead and, if your pet does make a mess, please be responsible, pick it up and dispose of it in one of the many bins provided around the village or take it home with you. We feel sure that if one of your children or younger relatives came home covered in dog mess you would be none too pleased! Please respect these facilities and leave them in a clean and safe condition. Thanking you in anticipation
POLICE REPORT A potential crime may have been averted by a resident who reported a vehicle acting suspiciously in Habblesthorpe by a timely phone call that a vehicle was scouting out properties. The vehicle was known to police forces, tracked and caught up with in Collingham, it was stopped, found to have no tax and was seized. The action by the Habblesthorpe resident is applauded in averting a crime. Mass Market scams will trick you into parting with money or providing your banking or personal details in the belief that you will win a cash prize. You do not have to pay a fee to claim a legitimate prize. It can only take a single response to a scammer to be inundated with further scam mail. Your name and address could be included on what s known as a Suckers List and you may receive large amounts of scam mail on a daily basis. Some auto crimes are being reported across adjoining beat areas, and historically across this one, which could be prevented by adopting basic security measures around vehicles. Vehicles are still being left insecure overnight and, in a lot of cases, items, which are attractive to criminals, are being left inside on full view. There are criminals out and about who randomly visit villages in order to check on vehicles. They will try door handles of vehicles parked on the public highway or on private driveways My contact number is and my E mail is david.airey@nottinghamshire.pnn.police.uk. PC 1695 Bill Bailey is the beat manager his contact number is and E mail is Bill.bailey@nottinghamshire.pnn.police.uk. Please do not use these telephone numbers to report incidents and/or crimes. Our works numbers should only be used for non-urgent matters. I would like to thank everyone for their vigilance, support, interest and help over the last twelve months and wish you all a happy and prosperous Best regards PCSO 8139 Dave Airey
LEVERTON WEDNESDAY (SENIOR) CLUB Club members enjoyed an excellent finale to First came an excellent Christmas dinner held once again at the Eyre Arms. This was followed the next week, (21st December), by a Christmas singsong, mince pies, sherry or non alcoholic drinks, plus a visit by Father Christmas. We then commenced the New Year with a Christmas tea at my my place prepared by members. The generosity of some of our members and a small grant by a Trust funded all this at minimum cost to members. We shall continue to meet fortnightly and would welcome new members our programme is normally half an hour of bingo, a simple quiz, refreshments, and then just a chance to chat or play a game of cards. Why not come along and give us a try? Our meeting dates will be January 25th, February 8th, February 22nd, March 8th, March 22nd, April 5th, April 19th and fortnightly. Highlights include a Fish and Chip lunch on February 8th and an afternoon tea out on April 19th. So we hope for a great time! The Club operates from 1.30pm 3.30pm and members pay just Any further information is available from myself or a committee member. Peter Dadd (Leader). Telephone: (01427) SPEEDWATCH The Speedwatch initiative continues in village, during 2016 we checked 2799 vehicles with 72 vehicles speeding over 35 mph which is 2.57%. It is not pleasant during the winter months when it is cold but we have still been out there doing our bit! The 30mph signs to be relocated on the road from Retford to just before the windmill bend are still on schedule to be completed before the end of March by NCC. Once moved NCC will monitor traffic speeds to see if an interactive sign at the Retford end of the village would be warranted. Rampton Hospital have confirmed that staff have been instructed to respect local speed limits especially when commuting through local villages. We are hopeful that a scheme can be set up where we can report to Rampton vehicle registration details clocked speeding through our village.
