Rushmoor Neighbourhood Policing Newsletter December 2016 Your SNT Management team are: Insp Olga Venner PS Kevin Futers PS Jamie O Brien PS Debbie Barnes Welcome to the first Rushmoor Neighbourhood team Newsletter for I do hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and enjoyable New Year s Eve followed by a crime free The crime areas that continue to dominate the press relate to fraud offences. It is the scourge of the modern electronic age and anybody who uses a computer, tablet or smartphone will suffer from an attempted cyber-attack. Figures suggest online fraud is est. to 10.9bn a year economic loss to UK residents which equates to 210 per person. Fraud is lucrative but one of the most difficult crimes to detect, online fraud can be perpetrated anywhere in the world making some offenders almost untouchable, the offenders of these offences target anyone and everyone. Some are fairly obvious such as improbable s stating that a whole family line had been wiped out in an air crash and following investigation the recipient of the was discovered to be a long lost relative in line to receive millions of pounds to be released if an admin fee was paid. Any online activity puts you at risk from buying goods from copycat websites, online dating and possible blackmail from pictures or footage of believed private acts, using money transfers etc. Fraudsters have become infinitely more sophisticated pretending to be from Amazon, E-bay, PayPal and multiple other legitimate organisations. These spam texts, adverts and offers trying to persuade you to contact the sender regarding an accident claim, PPI claim, free holiday or car, a medical remedy or similar are all designed to gain your personal details and bank details by directing you to a link In most cases there is nearly always tell-tale signs. Authentic text messages should include the name and contact details of the sender. You should have given consent for them to be sent. Never use the advert or link to visit the site conduct a separate internet search to enter the site I recommend that you report spam text messages directly to your mobile phone provider free of charge by forwarding them to 7726 from the device they are received. All network providers have collaborated to set up a tool which collates all the information from the 7726 enables your provider to take early action to block numbers that are generating spam on their networks, and report them to the regulators. If you do get caught out and become a victim to the scammers please visit ACTION FRAUD or ring it is the UK s national reporting center for fraud and cybercrime, where you should report fraud if you have been scammed, defrauded or experienced any type of cybercrime. The action fraud website details the latest scams and frauds, has online reporting tools. Another excellent site is GET SAFE ONLINE which gives advice on anything and everything online related. The headings include Protecting your Computer, Protecting Yourself, Smartphones and Tablets, Shopping Banking and Payments, Safeguarding Children, Social Networking, Business advice. My father always used to say (in his best Yorkshire accent) Ta never gets owt for nowt lad. Which means -You never get something for nothing and If it too good to be true it invariably is. Stay safe, stay crime free. 2 FARNBOROUGH CENTRAL (Empress and Town Centre Wards). Your SNT team are: PC Rob Dunster PC David Carpenter PCSO Ricky Chappell Christmas has now been and gone and we look forward to the New Year. The town centre has seen some great community events with Christmas lights being switched on and celebrity guests over the last month. We are now seeing a reduction in cycle theft, due to many of you taking advantage of our cycle lock offer. If you would like further information on this then please Rushmoor.police@hampshire.pnn.police.uk Town Centre Homelessness/ASB. There has been a significant decrease in ASB/issues in the town centre. Over the Christmas period, we were able to increase the Police Presence in the town centre, which has no doubt helped by preventing incidents. Burglary. I m very happy to report there have been no house burglaries in Farnborough Central this month Road Safety. The SpeedWatch volunteers have updated their locations in the Farnborough Central area. They are currently focussing on Prospect Road and Union Street due to the reports received by you. #YourVoiceCounts SpeedWatch: There have not been any SpeedWatch updates as yet. Upcoming Events: Keep your eyes open for new events being planned for the New Year. We will continue to use Twitter to advertise events, so make sure you follow

FARNBOROUGH NORTH (Fernhill & Cherrywood Wards) Your SNT team are: PC Mark Ranola PC Andrea Shoetan PCSO Kirstie Bough PCSO Gordon Pengilley PCSO Mitchell While PCSO Nilam Rai Vehicle Crime: Farnborough North Policing Team would like to make you aware about a number of vehicle s had their windows smashed and wing mirrors broken whilst they were parked up in Cherrywood Road, Mayfield Road and surrounding side roads. These incidents are mostly happening after hours and until day light. Please report any suspicious activities to us via 101. You can also consider installing CCTV overlooking where you park your vehicles or putting a dash cam in your car. Upcoming Events: Don t forget to attend your Local Councillors Beat Surgeries every first Saturday in Fox Pub, Chapel Lane and Prospect Centre, Mayfield Road (from 10am 12pm) Arson incidents: There has been two garage fires in Cromwell Way and a rubber part of a swing in Fairfax Play Park was set alight. These incidents were attended by the Rushmoor Fire Service and fortunately no one was hurt. Due to the seriousness of these incidents, a community event was held near to the play park. Fire, Police and Housing Association attended the event offering fire prevention advice and appealing for witnesses. Anti-Social Behaviour: We are still receiving reports of nuisance youths causing issues around the Co-Operative Store in Fernhill Road. These youths have been caught and are being dealt with. Speeding: The speed watch camera is currently being updated and we have no speed data at this stage. If you have concerns regarding vehicle speeding in your area, please do not hesitate to contact us via 101. You can also help by volunteering in the Speed Watch Volunteer Group. Please rushmoor.police@hampshire.pnn.police.uk for more detail regarding volunteering opportunity. Burglary: We received one burglary report and several garage breaks where tools were being targeted. Please consider installing a good garage defender to secure your property. You can obtain one from us for a cost price. If you wish for further information, you can again contact us via rushmoor.police@hampshire.pnn.police.uk.

FARNBOROUGH SOUTH (Knellwood & St Marks Wards) Your SNT team are: PC Mark Hoban PCSO James Charlton PCSO Terry Wellerd SC Dave Browning Happy New Year from the Farnborough South team; hopefully you have had an enjoyable and crime free Christmas period. The big issue for December seems to have been theft from motor vehicle, with 11 reported incidents of vehicles being entered and items removed in the South area. A couple of these have been forced entry to target tools or valuables but the majority have been opportunistic incidents where the car has been left insecure overnight. It is a hectic time of year and easy to forget to secure your vehicle when returning home with armfuls of Christmas shopping. It is always best practise to double check you have locked your car and to park it, where possible, in view of your property or a trusted neighbour s property. Also please don t leave valuables on sight in your car or better still remove them entirely. For further burglary prevention advice, please visit our Hampshire Constabulary web page with information regarding safer homes. Upcoming Events: There are currently no events planned. Last Month we ran a small crime prevention advice event called Coffee with Cops in North Camp. This was fairly successful so we hope to run another one again this Month and will circulate the details as soon as we have a date and venue set. There has also been a couple of scams from rogue traders in the area this Month. Please be mindful of who you are letting into your home and make sure you have checked a company thoroughly before having any work done. Trading Standards have a certified list of approved traders available in the area on their website. If you do have elderly or vulnerable neighbours please look out for them too and make a note if they have traders coming to their doors. If you do have any concerns over anyone you have at your door or a neighbours door then please report this to Police or Trading Standards. If the trader is still in the area then you can call 999 or ring 101 if calling retrospectively. Speeding. Unfortunately this Month our Speedwatch equipment had to be sent for repairs. There was one operation conducted on Lynchford Road on Monday 12 th December between 10.00am and 11.00am. 454 vehicles were checked in this time and 14 were recorded exceeding the limit. The letters have been sent out to these drivers. We are looking for new Speedwatch volunteers, so if you feel you could spare a few hours a month and would like to join a team to help tackle local issues of speeding, please get in contact with PC Lee Jeffers via lee.jeffers@hampshire.pnn.police.uk 2. Burglaries. This month there have been 2 dwelling burglaries and 2 non dwelling burglaries in the Farnborough South area. One of these dwelling burglaries was linked to a rogue trader as mentioned above. The other was due to an insecure front door; please remember to lock all doors and windows at night. Leave a light on to deter burglars when you go out and consider target hardening equipment such as CCTV, alarms or spot lights. Also remember to secure sheds and out buildings if they contain anything of value.

FARNBOROUGH WEST (Cove & Southwood Ward, St John s Ward & West Heath Wards) Your SNT team are: PC Lee Jeffers PC Neil Prescott PCSO Lisa Atwood PCSO Michelle Curtis During December 2016, Farnborough West has had 4 thefts and 2 attempt thefts from Motor Vehicles. These incidents occurred in Links Way, Coriander Close, Weir Close, Giffard Drive, Brookhouse Road and Southwood Road. Several of the incidents were as a result of vehicles being left unlocked overnight and the others were work vans which were forced open and had expensive tools within stolen. These type of crimes can be reduced in part by owners remembering to lock their vehicles overnight. Earlier in the month of December, Farnborough West had a couple of House Burglaries in Brewers Close and West Heath Road. Both properties were accessed by forcing entry to doors at the rear. Both of these investigations are still ongoing by our CID office. On 14 th December 2016, there was an armed robbery at a Bookmakers on Cove Road. After a rapid response by various police departments, a suspect was identified, arrested and charged to appear at Winchester Crown Court. The detained male has since made his first appearance in court and has been remanded in prison pending his court trial. To reduce the community concerns / fear of fraud type crime. This being the perception of the community, rather than any immediate or heightened risk of fraud in the Farnborough West area. Due to the Speed Indicator Device being returned to the manufacturer for repairs, no SpeedWatch operations have been conducted in Farnborough West during December The Equipment has now been repaired and returned and so we will resume with operations during January SpeedWatch: During November 2016, the Speed Indicator Device developed a fault and had to be returned to the manufacturer in Germany for repair. As a result, no SpeedWatch operations were conducted on Farnborough West during December Upcoming Events: Your Neighbourhood Policing Team will be holding the following surgeries each month: 1st Saturday each month, 10 am to midday in the restaurant at The Plough & Horses, Fleet Road, Farnborough. During December 2016, your Farnborough West NPT have circulated the first six Fraud Prevention advice leaflets via Hampshire Alert. We have also held a Fraud Prevention presentation for residents at Blunden Hall on 29 th December To tackle and reduce incidents of Nuisance Behaviour in the Pyestock Estate area around Whetstone Road, Kenilworth Road, Melrose Avenue and Ladywood Avenue. During December 2016, the Farnborough West NPT have conducted regular patrols throughout the Pyestock Estate. As a result of these patrols there have been no reports of any Anti-Social Behaviour. The only incidents of significance on the estate during this period, were two drug related incidents involving persons in vehicles with cannabis and a noise complaint about a Christmas party. To tackle and reduce incidents of speeding vehicles on Fleet Road, Fernhill Road, West Heath Road, Giffard Drive, Minley Road and Southwood Road.

ALDERSHOT NORTH (Wellington & Rowhill Wards) Your SNT team are: PC Natasha Farr PC Daniel Eaves PC Aaron Webb PCSO Marie Park PCSO Treeshna Rai PCSO Durga Thapa PCSO Heidi Neilsen We hope you had a good Christmas and wishing you a prosperous New Year During the festival period, local beat officers have set up an Anti-theft Operation in town centre. Anti-social behaviour in town centre continues and officers have been challenging them whilst out on patrol. Anti-social behaviour in town centre remains our local beat priority. The reports have mostly been noise related. Officers have come across different groups in the park. Officers have tried to engage with the groups to deter criminal activities. If you witness any suspicious activities around the area, please contact on 101. Anti-theft Operation - Local Officers have conducted plain cloth patrols in town centre to prevent and catch the shoplifters. Officers have been successful in arresting two males for shoplifting. These males are also well known to the police. They have been charged for theft from a shop. When you are out shopping in town, we would like to advise you to stay alert and vigilant of your surroundings. Carry your handbags close to you. If you suspect any suspicious behaviour, please make the staff members aware. Local beat officers work closely with the Rushmoor CCTV and the Wellington Centre securities team. If you require police assistance dial on 999 in case of emergency or 101 for non-emergency incidents.

ALDERSHOT SOUTH (Aldershot Park, Northtown, & Manor Wards) Your SNT team are: PC Karen East PC Sarah Hill PC Simeon PCSO Phil Pitkin PCSO Kathryn Poulton Blanchard PCSO Ethan Worsell. We are pleased to welcome PCSO Ethan Worsell into the team in replacement of James COOPER who left us at the end of last year. The lead up to Christmas is historically a time when crime can increase. An increase in acquisitive crime is often seen as a means for people to fund their own Christmas festivities and an increase in the number of social functions can lead to an increase in alcohol fuelled anti-social behaviour and violence. In order to combat these issues the Aldershot South Neighbourhood Policing Team have been involved in the following. Working alongside our Aldershot North NPT colleagues we have conducted a number of uniformed and covert anti-theft patrols in Aldershot town centre to tackle thefts from shops and theft of bags or purses from shoppers. These have seen intervention with known previous offenders as well as prosecutions for offences found being committed. Licencing and night time economy patrols have been conducted around Aldershot to reduce the likelihood of alcohol fuelled ASB and crime. Our licencing team have conducted a test purchase operation in the lead up to Christmas to assist in the prevention of alcohol being sold to underage persons. Together with colleagues from across the district we have launched Operation Bastille, which will see us working with partner agencies to target violence associated with the use and supply of illegal drugs. Crime. Fortunately, at present the Aldershot South beat area is not suffering from any discernible pattern of crime. As with any urban conurbation there are always irregular reports of crimes including the occasional dwelling burglary, thefts from vehicles and nondwelling burglaries. Whilst we are still in the period of dark evenings, meaning properties are often left in darkness before occupants return home after a working day, there are several precautions you can take to make you and your property safer. House security: Use timer switches (available from most D.I.Y stores) to switch on lights, radios while you are away from the home to make it look and sound occupied. Ensure you shut and lock windows and doors when you return home and settle down for the evening. Ensure you have used padlocks on the side gates to deny access to the rear of the property. Ensure your outside lighting is in working order (consider low level ambient light on a dusk to dawn sensor) this will activate even when you are not at home. After the summer, secure your garden tools and garden equipment in a locked and alarmed shed or garage for the winter so that they cannot be used to gain entry to your home. Property mark belongings with your house number and postcode, keep a list of any makes, models and serial numbers. Take photos of jewellery. Register your items for free at Using this service will assist the police in returning property to the rightful owner should it be stolen. window locks. If you are feeling vulnerable or are elderly, ask for a free home safety and security survey by the Bobby Trust, call for an appointment. Personal security: Plan how you are going to get home, avoid going home alone. Stay with your friends. Make sure that your cash, mobile phone and personal items are not on display. Let someone know where you are and what time you'll get home. If you use a taxi, ensure it is a registered taxi company. If you do use public transport, sit near the driver. Don't go down dark alleyways, parks, subways and car parks. Stick to well lit, busy streets. If your New Year Resolution involves being out running, please remember to wear something bright and reflective so you can easily be seen. Beat priorities Anti-social behaviour in Manor Park. We have conducted regular patrols in Manor Park and have not had any recent reports of anti-social behaviour. Anti-social behaviour Aldershot Park. As with Manor Park there have been no recent incidences of anti-social behaviour. Vehicle related nuisance. Springlakes Industrial Estate. After moving a few vehicles on from this area there have been no further problems encountered. Upcoming events PCSO Blanchard is conducting a professional s presentation regarding crime prevention for the elderly and vulnerable on 16 th January. This is a power point presentation to carers of the elderly or vulnerable and what to look for regarding doorstep crimes, e- mail and mail scams, courier fraud and rouge trading. If you are a carer or work in the care industry and would like PCSO Blanchard to come and do a talk, or you wish to attend on the 16/01, please contact her via 101 or katherine.blanchard@hampshire.pnn.police.uk Look out in Wilkinsons for a crime prevention stand in the month of January, remember this time of year if someone knocks on your door offering to do work on your roof or guttering etc to bear in mind rouge traders, you may not need the work doing, or they may not be qualified to complete this and over charge you. Look out for elderly or vulnerable neighbours who are having work completed on their houses. PCSO Godbold is keen to set up a Community Speedwatch scheme. If you are interested please contact PCSO Godbold via ; dominic.godbold@hampshire.pnn.police.uk. This is a good time to address your security, fit extra door and
