About 1,400 people attended the open day event at Leeds District Headquarters, in Elland Road, and had the opportunity to take escorted tours of the building, including limited access to the cells, and see demonstrations of police tactics, vehicles and equipment. A range of stalls and displays showcased the work of a range of departments and provided crime prevention advice and information for people potentially interested in becoming Special Constables, Police Volunteers or starting a Neighbourhood Watch scheme. There was also plenty of entertainment for children, including face painting, Percy the police car, finger-printing and wanted posters. Chief Superintendent Paul Money, Leeds District Commander, was on hand to meet the public and talk about the policing challenges in Leeds. The building s community café hosted a coffee morning in aid of Macmillan and a total of 1,200 was raised. Some of the money raised came from a custard pie challenge at a staff only event held on the rooftop terrace later in the day. It was also a great opportunity for staff to have some fun together and raise money for a good cause. We would like to thank all those involved who worked hard to help make the day a great success as well as the community for coming along.

Mark Burns-Williamson visited Leeds Central Police Station, in Park Street, to see first-hand how the new facility has been created from the redevelopment of part of the building that previously housed the Leeds Bridewell, which is no longer used as a custody suite. As well as providing a base for the City Neighbourhood Policing Team, the building includes a public enquiry counter which opens every day from 8am to 10pm. The station went operational when officers from the City NPT moved from Millgarth Police Station, which has been sold and will make way for the new Victoria Gate development. Mr Burns-Williamson said: This Leeds base will provide the city and local community direct contact with their Neighbourhood Policing Team ensuring good visibility in making sure our communities are safer and feel safer. Vantastic day in Morley Local officers took out the community Police van to get to the wheel heart of the community. PCSO Macgregor and PCSO Westle patrolled Morley town centre, engaging with members of the public and offering crime prevention advice. Mini uniforms were provided for children to dress up as a Police Officer. Paul the Padlock also made an appearance handing out crime prevention and purse bells to members of the public. It proved to be a fantastic day, with a great response from the local community!

Team West Yorkshire raised 10,097.00 and this was presented to Nicolas parents Bryn and Nat Hughes by Temporary Chief Constable Dee Collins.

This was to run 250 miles by April 2014 to raise money for PC Nicola Hughes Memorial Fund. Nicola and her colleague Fiona Bone were shot dead in September 2012 in Greater Manchester by Dale Cregan. Team West Yorkshire raised 10, and this was presented to Nicolas parents Bryn and Nat Hughes by Temporary Chief Constable Dee Collins.? WASP THE STORY A man was arrested after Good Groundwork in Gildersome breaking into business premises in Hunslet. The male, however, ended up in hospital after making the unfortunate decision to hide from the Police in a bush and thus disturbing a wasps nest. Once his swellings went down, he was charged with burglary. OUCH! The new police base for neighbourhood officers serving the centre of Leeds has been officially opened by West Yorkshire s Police and Crime Commissioner. The initiative involved Police, local residents and volunteers from the Princes Trust in conjunction with a team of workers tidied up the area, which was a known hotspot for anti-social behaviour. Over the course of 6 weeks some 23 tonnes of waste was removed from the area. It is hoped that this can be used as blueprint for similar projects in the future.

Consider a strong grille or heavy wire mesh to increase window security and the use of net curtains to deter casual viewing. Post-code items that you store in the shed or garage. Use a visible method of marking where possible such as permanent marker pen. Keep a record of any serial numbers. Use a chain to secure valuable items within the shed or garage, so even if someone does break in they won't be able to walk off with your valuable items. Remember to lock everything away in your shed or garage once you have secured it. Don't be tempted to leave things out overnight or while you just 'nip to the shops'. It only takes a minute for someone to walk off with your belongings.

The role is extremely varied and diverse, and a challenge to say the least! I have met so many different people from different backgrounds and aspects of life and have carried out a number of different duties. I have participated in a number of community events, as well as patrolling the local areas, dealing with burglaries, theft, public order and domestic incidents, to name but a few. There are plenty of opportunities to work with other departments within the police, including traffic and response as well as the other emergency services. Additionally, there are always important and interesting operations taking place, where Special Constables play a vital role. 9 Getting Wheel Protection Bike Security Local officers have been out offering crime prevention to cyclists. Working in partnership with Woodrup Cycles, we were out on Park Row trying to prevent the cyclists of Leeds becoming victims of crime. D-locks were fitted for just 10 instead of the usual 24.99, a free bike health check was provided, as well as an Immobitag given so that bikes were given a unique reference number that is recorded on Police systems across the UK. Please register your bike for free at and help protect it. Are you taxi aware? West Yorkshire Police are supporting a campaign being launched by Leeds City Council around taxi safety. The aim is to make visitors to the city centre aware of the differences between taxis and private hire vehicles and the potential dangers of plying for hire activity. The campaign will be predominantly targeted at students and party goers in the lead up to Christmas so there will be regular updates about this from Leeds City Council and West Yorkshire Police.
