Harehills Prepares for Festival Fun On 20th September 2015 Leeds City Council alongside residents, local community groups and local businesses in the Harehills area are hosting the Harehills Festival. The Festival will be from 12pm until 4pm in Banstead Park, involving a mixture of food, entertainment, activities and information stalls. Sport and Active Lifestyles will be delivering some multi-sport activities for local children, young people and adults and Fever FM will be supporting the festival with music. Due to the amount of interest from local people and the limited space in Banstead Park, we hope to be able to deliver some of the activities on surrounding streets. To make sure that this is safe and secure for participants, we are offering residents the opportunity to apply for a Play Street licence. This will mean that your street will be closed to traffic between 12pm 4pm on 20th September Officers from both Leeds City Council's Communities Team, ENE Locality Team and Local PC's delivered information regarding the opportunity recently. We enjoyed meeting local residents and seeing the park busy with people having fun. Find out more about Play Streets here : Streets Taking illegal Taxis to Task Recently officers were out on an operation with both Council Taxi Enforcement staff, a police volunteer and a civilian observer. Multiple taxis were stopped and checked for both safety and documentation compliance with several being taken off the road until improvements have been made. The observer was a 17 year old student called Sophia, she had come along with Tomas, a police volunteer to see what the police get up to and gain a valuable insight into modern policing.

Green Flag Award for Allerton Grange Fields Local PCSOs have been lending their support to Allerton Grange Fields, after it was named as one of the best public green spaces in the UK. PCSOs Stuart Thompson and Phil McHale were on hand to show their support and represent Inner North East Leeds Neighbourhood Policing Team as we often work them on community projects. Allerton Grange Fields is among a recordbreaking 1,582 parks and green spaces across the UK that have this year received a prestigious Green Flag Award the mark of a quality park or green space. Allerton Grange Fields is a 3 hectare public playing fields located in the heart of north Leeds with a traffic free cycle path linking Lidgett Lane to Talbot Avenue, two sports pitches, a community orchard, edible flower beds, wildflower beds and a wildlife area. Volunteers from Friends of Allerton Grange Fields work in close partnership with Leeds City Council Parks & Countryside to protect, maintain and enhance the fields. The award recognises and rewards the best parks and green spaces across the country. Bhupinder Dev, Chair of Friends of Allerton Grange Fields said: We are absolutely delighted to receive a Green Flag Community Award from Keep Britain Tidy. This Award recognises the work of our volunteers and highlights that residents in this part of Roundhay and Moortown are benefitting from access to a public green space of the very highest quality. We look forward to making further improvements to the fields in the year ahead with benches, outdoor gym and junior trim trail provision. 73 parks and green spaces across Yorkshire and Humberside are proudly flying a Green Flag Award, after being judged to be some of the best in the country. The Awards are judged by an army of more than 700 greenspace experts, who volunteer their time to visit applicant sites and assess them against eight strict criteria, including horticultural standards, cleanliness, sustainability and community involvement. If you would like to get involved with the work of Friends of Allerton Grange Fields then visit the website: for further information.

Brewing up Great Memories Here are a couple of cracking snaps from the second ever Cop Shop Memory Café at Elland Road Police Station today, following the launch last month. It was another great event, with approximately 25 people affected by dementia and memory problems and their carers attending. It was lovely to see some familiar faces return as well as see some new ones. This month's café run by West Yorkshire Police and South Leeds Live at Home Scheme and supported by Care & Repair Leeds who brought their Reminiscence Library which included books, nostalgic pictures, memory jogger cards and fun games to encourage conversations and reminisce. Whilst enjoying coffee and cake, Nick Whitcombe, one of West Yorkshire Police's Crime Reduction Officers, spoke to people about staying safe in their homes and personal safety when out and about. The next café will be held on Wednesday 26th August at Leeds District Headquarters, Elland Road, from 1pm-3pm, we d love to see you there. Driving out Bad Driving Members of the public recently informed officers about problems with motor vehicles turning left at the junction of Chapeltown Road and Harehills Lane, which is prohibited and clearly marked by signs. PC Goringe and PC Ward attended and took some action: 3 x drivers were issued with traffic tickets for contravening traffic signs. 1 x driver was issued a Traffic Offence Report for having no insurance and contravening traffic signs. This is a ticket for an offence, meaning the Central Process Bureau will then decide whether to issue a fine or a course. After a search of a person and vehicle under section 23 of the Misuse of Drugs Act. Cannabis was seized and a cannabis warning was issued.

Operation onto a Champion Winner Day 1: Local Officers have been out in both Chapeltown recently, along with Housing staff, Leeds Anti-social Behaviour Team, Off Road Bikers and Environmental Action from Leeds City Council as part of a pro-active partnership operation. Here is an outline of what we got up to on the day : - Officers spent the day in the area carrying out extra patrols, delivering leaflets with information with regards to anti-social behaviour. - PCSO Dan Scott was based at Reginald Park giving out some crime prevention freebies and showing the local children around the Police van. - Leeds City Council visited numerous addresses doing tenancy checks. - The road sweeper was out cleaning up the Sholebrokes/Scott Halls/Mexboroughs and Saviles. Leeds City Council Environmental Action Team were patrolling the area, paying particular attention to fly tipping as there has been a lot in the area lately. Leeds Anti-social Behaviour Team, Housing Leeds and Leeds Environmental Action Team also attended at The Chapeltown Nursery with our mascot Paul The Padlock. Day 2: Partners came together on Wednesday 6th August for a highly visible day of action in Burmantofts. Operation Champion lead by Housing Leeds and West Yorkshire Police brought together a range of council services, community payback and the customs service to carry out an intensive day of action around the Torre s in Bumantofts. Staff from the Locality team were out in force tidying up hedges and cleaning up rubbish, residents got stuck in bringing out there waste to fill the skips that had been paid by Housing Leeds. Housing officers door knocked the area to carry out annual tenancy visits and handed out information on local services. The Police were out in force checking private hire cars and following up leads from their ANPR camera. Community payback did a great job of clearing the bind weed off the railings along Torre Drive. Cllr Khan(Burmantofts and Richmond Hill) said it was great to see so many partners coming together to deliver Operation Champion, real practical partnership working on the ground makes a massive difference

Going on a Summer Holiday? Make sure you have no more worries for a week or two. When arranging your holiday make sure you think about your home security for while you are away. Just because you are on holiday does not mean burglars are taking time off too. If it looks like you are away then your home could become a target. Follow our simple tips to secure your home against burglars: As you start to plan and prepare for your well-earned break, make sure you have a secure place, such as a safe in your property to store your passport, foreign currency and travel documents until you go away. Many holidays have been ruined by passports and cash being stolen a few days before people set off. Use it for jewellery, cheque books and credit cards not wanted on holiday. Make sure the garden looks cared for and that passers-by can see the front of your home so that a burglar can't work without being spotted. Some people think large overgrown hedges help hide their property, but they can be a blessing to those wanting to break in Remove and secure items that may be used to break in or climb up such as ladders and garden tools, and securely lock your shed so that burglars can t use the tools inside. Use automatic timer-switches to turn on a light and perhaps a radio when it gets dark. Cancel any newspaper or milk deliveries Work with your neighbours to keep an eye on each other's homes, Neighbourhood Watch groups are good for this. A pile of post on the doormat is a clear sign that you are away. Ask a trusted neighbour to pick up your post, or use Royal Mail's "Keep safe" service; they will keep your mail for up to two months A trusted neighbour may also be able to help by coming round and opening and closing curtains and could even park their car on your driveway making it look like people are coming and going from your home. Never leave keys anywhere near the front door, including your letterbox; a potential burglar knows where to look Consider fitting a letterbox cage or other restrictor to prevent burglars from putting their hands or gadgets through and opening the latches from the inside. If you have a burglar alarm make sure it is serviced and you have mutual arrangement with a neighbour to hold keys and check the property. False calls are annoying and the genuine one may just get ignored. Don't advertise that you are away. Social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter can be a risk if people know you are away and your home is empty. Ensure you check your privacy settings on these accounts. Community Group take Tour of HQ PCSOs Biscombe and Nasir with the help of Police staff member Adele Attree took children from the Northern Region Study Guide Group on a tour around West Yorkshire Police Headquarters at Elland Road recently. The Group (NRSGG) who are based at The Leeds West Indian Centre in Chapeltown were able to explore the Headquarters whilst trying on some mini uniforms, thoroughly enjoying their insight into the world of policing.

Pride of the force put on a show The Force Band stole the show at the big Leeds Pride event which was attended by thousands of revellers on Sunday, August 2. There was also a WYP Special Constable recruitment stand involving WYP LGBT. Band Manager DC Simon Marshall, Kirklees District Programme of Change, said it was a tremendous atmosphere. Corporate Communications retweeted and posted messages supporting the event and highlighting the Special Constable recruitment opportunities. Positive tweets from festival goers included: WYP band leading the parade great atmosphere and loads of friendly banter WYP band playing Lady Gaga this is awesome!! WYP band well done, you were amazing - couldn t have asked for a better lead for the parade You guys properly rocked the station Caught the band playing in the station on the way home absolutely brilliant A very big thank you to the Band See you 2016! 10 Golden Days at Meanwood Olympics West Yorkshire Police and Zest Health for Life have been celebrating a successful community event. Meanwood Olympics is a free event run each summer, promoting healthy living and sporting opportunities in the community. The event involves lots of different sports games such as dodge ball and wellie wanging. There was a Yorkshire themed quiz hosted by PCSO Michelle Winn, music and dancing with a DJ, a colouring competition and even banner making. The event was opened by the Lord Mayor of Leeds, Councillor Judith Chapman with MP Fabian Hamilton also attending. PCSOs Andy Moffatt, John Hutchinson and Phil Cannon provided a stall with activities for the children, whilst PCSO Nicki Cox organised the Tour de Meanwood. The lads then got out on their bikes for some cycling action with the locals. PCSOs Sian Riley and Josh Lowcock turned out for the second weeks events which included tag rugby with professional coaches. Got a question about policing and the Law?
