Temporary Editor Lamar Hart January 2012 Our 43 rd Year Annual Dues Membership dues for the 2012 calendar year are now past due. If your dues have not yet been paid, please do so as soon as possible. The dues are still only $20.00 and should be sent to Bert Steele. We would certainly like to include you in the 2012 roster. January Tour Tuesday January 24 Governor s Mansion Host, Fred Lindquist The January tour to the Governor s Mansion will begin at the Waffle House located at the corner of Piedmont Rd. and Pharr Rd. in Buckhead. We will depart at 9:39 A.M. from the parking lot, so if you want to eat breakfast or have a cup of coffee, come early. If you need information about getting to this location, call me at (404) We will leave and drive through Buckhead to the Mansion. The guides will take us through the home. Following the home tour, we will be able to individually take a picture of each of our V8 s in front of the mansion as a souvenir of your visit. We will drive from the mansion through an area of fine homes to arrive at the Landmark Diner on Roswell Rd. for lunch. The owner has indicated that he would like some of the cars parked directly in front of the restaurant to show them off to the passersby (actually, he might be hoping they will draw some customers in). Bring your appetite because they have super desserts here. After lunch, we will drive south on Roswell Rd. to Peachtree Rd. and then to the Rhodes Hall. This is the former home of A.G. Rhodes who constructed the home in The architecture is based on the Rhine River Castles that he and his bride saw on their honeymoon to Europe. The home sits on what was a large piece of property in the Pershing Point area and is owned by the State of Georgia and now houses the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation. There will be a $6.00/person fee to tour this home. If you plan to participate in this tour, please call me at the above number so that I will be able to notify the Governor s mansion, the restaurant, and Rhodes Hall about the approximate number they could expect. This is a rain or shine activity, so if it is raining, drive modern. There is plenty of parking at all three locations. For more details about this event, please see the December Running Board.

Photography From Lamar Hart As part of the team that furnishes the articles and pictures to the V-8 Times describing the activities of our Georgia Regional Group, we need some help. Fred Lindquist writes the articles, and I send the pictures, but neither of us has much photographic skill or equipment. Most of the pictures we send to the V-8 Times do not reproduce well in print. Some of you are much more capable with a camera than we are. So we are appealing to those individuals for a little help. We are asking that willing parties bring those good cameras to meetings, tours, and other special events. I will loan you a memory card to record your photos and you can return it at the end of the event. Your help would be greatly appreciated and our pictures in the V-8 Times will probably look better. 10 THE FORD RUNNING BOARD Georgia Regional Group #24, Early Ford V-8 Club of America, Inc. Temporary Editor Lamar Hart February 2012 Our 43 rd Year March Meeting Tuesday March 6 th at 7:30 PM Will s Automotive Machine Shop 3149 Chamblee Dunwoody Road Chamblee, GA Will and Mark Hodges have opened their shop for our March Meeting. The Hodges have made generous contributions toward the V-8 flathead engine that is being raffled to raise funds for the 2012 Eastern National Meet. We sincerely appreciate their help. Please keep them in mind when you need machine shop services. Directions to Will s meeting: From I-285 take exit 32, Turn South onto Buford Highway / US23. Go 1&1/10 th mile and turn right onto Chamblee Dunwoody Road. Go 1/10 th mile and look for Will s Machine Shop on your right Eastern National Meet Hiawassee, Georgia, June Update by Wayne Deitrich Q: HOW MUCH DOES IT THE COST TO HOST A NATIONAL MEET? Several RG #24 club members have asked this question and it struck me that many of you may be interested in the answer. Not counting lodging which meet attendees pay directly, the cash outlay necessary to host the meet will be in the range of $40,000-45,000. Surprised? Are you wondering how RG #24 can afford such an expense? The meet committee composed of RG #24 members must plan and prepare to host the meet. While this duty is a heap of work, the committee has a second equally daunting task - to raise funds to offset the expense of hosting the meet. The goals set by the committee are to host a fun-filled and well-orchestrated meet that all attendees enjoy, AND to have a financially successful meet that breaks even, thus leaving no financial burden for RG #24. Continued next page

11 How could it possibly cost so much to host a meet? We host two dinners - a Welcome Dinner on the opening night and an Awards Dinner to close the meet. Each dinner can cost about $8000-$10,000 just for the food, preparation and serving. There is a weekly rental fee for a very big tent, tent lighting, sound system, tables, chairs, table cloths, plates, glasses and flatware for folks, and we provide complimentary refreshments at the Welcoming Dinner ($9000-$10,000). We rent the North Georgia Fairgrounds and pavilion for the week ($1500). Awards and plaques for the show cars are provided ($8000). There are essentials like a dozen porta-potties, hand sanitizing stations, a fleet of golf carts to assist folks from place to place, security guards to watch the cars at night and assist during the day ($5000), judge s breakfast for folks ($2000), and cases of bottled water to keep the attendees hydrated. Then there is a slew of items too small to account- envelopes, letterheads, information and direction signs, ads in the V-8 Times and other publications. Postage alone for the many mailings to other RG s, registrants, suppliers, advertisers, etc. will cost an estimated $1000-$1500. How do we plan to pay for the meet? We pay for the meet by raising sufficient funds (hopefully) to offset the costs. We charge attendees a fee for each activity and meal, but we have to balance what we believe is a reasonable and fair price against the cost of the event. Sometimes we can lose money on an event if we price it too high and too few folks choose to participate. Attendees pay a registration fee that helps pay for judging awards and various rental fees. We sell various items such as club logo clothing, meet memorabilia such as gearshift knobs and posters at a small profit. There are three other significant avenues for raising funds that we employ, but each requires a tremendous amount of personal effort or contact and followup work: - As you know several members have built an 8BA engine for raffle. These members donated their time to build the engine, Wills machine shop donated their services to prepare the block and crank, and 5-6 members contributed many weekends to taking the engine to car shows as far away as Hershey, PA to sell tickets. We expect ticket sales minus expenses for parts to net $10,000. Our club could not break even on the meet without the personal contributions of time and effort from these members. - Suppliers as big as Drake and Carpenter and as small as V-8 club members who do specialized repair work as an avocation are solicited for ad placement in the meet booklet and/or donation of an item or service that can be auctioned at the meet. - We request individuals and other Regional Groups to donate cash or items that can be auctioned in a silent auction at the meet to raise funds for the meet. I thank every member of RG #24 for your interest in the 2012 Eastern National Meet, and your willingness to be involved and participate in hosting the meet. It is important that we make Hiawassee 2012, a memorable experience for all who choose to attend.

12 Spaghetti Dinner and Auction Saturday March 24 th starting at 12 Noon Jerry Reichel s Car Barn This is our major fund raising activity to help finance our local club. We need a wide variety of good useful items for both men and ladies, including Ford parts, tools, antiques, collectables, decorating things, home made cookies, fudge, cakes, and anything that could be useful. 14 Report On February 4 th Saturday Night Social By Fred Lindquist Members and guests met at the Blue Ribbon Grill for the regular monthly social activity. The owners of the shopping area are adding another facility that limits the parking somewhat, but everyone was able to find a parking spot. Fortunately, reservations had been made, as the restaurant was full. There was a lot of lively discussion among our group and everyone seemed to enjoy the lighthearted banter. There were 26 people in our group this month. This is a casual club activity and if you can find time in your schedule to participate, plan to join the group next month and enjoy the food and conversation. Participants: Bill & Allison Swilley, Roy & Janelle Hatcher, Jerry & Cheryl Reichel Bert & Lorraine Steele. Ken & Jean Wells, Fred & Katie Lindquist, Bob & Mary Ann Padovano, Joe & Jean Smith, Charles & Ann Stroup, Debbie Padovano, Stacie Maddox, Laura & Judson Abbott, Tom & Connie Hart, Lamar Hart & Nancy Bireley. Report On Governor s Mansion Tour By Fred Lindquist After several days of cool damp weather, Tuesday dawned clear and dry. Members of Regional Group #24 assembled at a Waffle House in Buckhead in preparation for the January day tour. There were Waffle House customers and employees who came out to admire the V8 s. The group left for the Governor s Mansion, construction completed in 1968, after receiving the day s driving instructions. The Georgia State Patrolman at the Governor s Mansion gate instructed us to park in the circle in front of the Mansion instead of the side parking area where most visitors park. We were greeted by a hostess and then the Governor s wife, Mrs. Deal, greeted us in the foyer. Following the tour of the first floor, the group assembled on the front steps along with Mrs. Deal for pictures. Then everyone was able to drive their car in front of the Mansion for an individual picture. This picture was a great souvenir of the visit. Mrs. Deal was very interested in the V8 s and Bob Padovano showed her each one, which she seemed to enjoy. We left the Mansion with the assistance of the State Patrolmen who stopped traffic on West Paces Ferry Road so we could leave together. The group took a leisurely drive through the northwest neighborhood of fine homes before arriving at the Landmark Diner. The staff was waiting for us and had a table set in a separate dining room. The meal was enjoyed by everyone and true to form Bob Padovano was served his meal last, the tradition continues. Cheryl and Wayne each had one of the huge delicious desserts they serve. As we left, everyone was provided a cookie. Continued next page

15 Continued from previous page The group departed driving south on Roswell Road into Buckhead and then south on Peachtree Road to Rhodes Hall. This home constructed by A. G. Rhodes in 1904 that originally included 114 acres has been owned by the State Of Georgia since The docent gave the group a tour of the three floors of the restored home (9,000 square feet) and provided almost more historical information than we could absorb about the home, Atlanta, the South, the Civil War, and his family history. It was a fascinating tour of one of the last of the large homes that used to line Peachtree Street. The group said their goodbyes after the tour and headed home. There were eighteen people on this tour. Participants: Cleve & Pat McAfee, 1957 Tudor, Bert & Lorraine Steele, 1939 Coupe, Bob & Mary Ann Padovano, 1951 Tudor, Wayne & Sue Dietrich, 1940 Conv, Jerry & Cheryl Reichel, 1951 Fordor, Fred & Katie Lindquist, 1939 Coupe, Jim & Grant Brown, Modern, Don Morris, 1941 Conv, Jerry & Vina McIntosh, Modern, Frank Sessions, Modern. 20 2012 Eastern National Meet June Wayne Deitrich Q: WHAT IS A CHINESE RAFFLE? A Chinese raffle is a type of silent auction that we will use at the Eastern National Meet to raise funds to help pay for hosting the meet. Here is how the Chinese Raffle or auction works. We ask suppliers, vendors, other Regional Groups and RG#24 members to donate items of interest that will attract the attention of those folks attending the meet. The donated items are displayed in a room at the host hotel where meet attendees can easily view the items. Each item is accompanied by a description and a container. Meet attendees purchase raffle tickets at a price of $1.00 each and can place as many tickets as they wish into the containers of the items they hope to win. Of course the more tickets an individual places in a particular container increases the opportunity of their winning that item. On Friday morning the raffle is closed and a winning ticket is pulled from the container of each item in the Chinese raffle display. The winner of each item is posted and winners take their prizes home. We have collected a varied and interesting array of items for the Chinese Raffle, and would like to add to this array items donated by RG#24 members. What could you donate to the raffle that would add to the following array of items already in-hand? Crisp $50 bill & $100 bills; $50 American Express gift cards; Illustrated Ford posters; a magnificent 2 ft. diameter professionally hand painted EFV8 club logo, yellow on blue; framed photo of 1935 Ford V-8 Indianapolis race car; large GMP model flathead engine kit; Edelbrock super dual intake manifold for flathead Ford or Mercury, 18 old style gas pump; 1936 Esso map of New England; $100 gift certificate from LeBaron Bonney; gift certificates from Joe Smith Antique and Hot Rod Auto Parts, Antique Auto Battery, Lucas Tire, C&G Auto Parts, Mac s Auto Parts; EFV8CA Restoration Books; metal scale models of old trucks; old issues and complete years of Woodie Times and various auto magazines; R&M Auction books for the Nick Alexander Woodie Collection and the Dingman Flathead Ford Collection auctions; various gift baskets of Georgia items... and more. ADD YOUR DONATION TO OUR LIST. Q: HAVE YOU REGISTERED TO ATTEND THE MEET? If not, what are you waiting for? COME JOIN THE FUN!! Contact Bob Schwartz for registration information ( ). If you have pre-registered, but not submitted your full registration package, please do so as soon as possible BECAUSE, WE ARE GETTING CLOSE to the maximum number of folks that can be seated at the WELCOME DINNER and AWARDS BANQUET! Don t procrastinate. As my dear Mom would tell me, HE WHO HESITATES IS OFTEN LEFT BEHIND. So heed the simple WISDOM of my MOM!! Mom made sure she was never left behind.

The music (maestro Bob Padovano and the V-8 men's choir singing "Let Me Call You Sweetheart") was up to its usual standard. Attendees: Fred & Katie Lindquist, Bob & Mary Ann Padovano, David & Becci Jumper, Ray & Barbara Allen, Dan & Helen Rolader, Jerry & Vina McIntosh, Lamar Hart & Nancy Bireley, Bert & Lorraine Steele, Mike & Bonnie Pertsch, Gary & Nila Benton, Roy & Janelle Hatcher. Big Turnout For Interesting Program We had 31 members and guest at Will s Machine Shop for the March 6 club meeting. Mark and Will Hodges again took great care of us. We especially appreciate their contributing the food and refreshments. Please keep them in mind when you need any machine shop services. They do good work and deserve our support. Ed Preston who has extensive experience with racing engine oils and additives presented the program for the evening. Both NASCAR engines and early Ford flatheads use flat tappets riding directly on the cam. They both need ZDDP additive to prevent rapid wear in this area. However recent unannounced changes in oils with a rating of SM and SN include additives that reject the ZDDP. Ed Preston recommends that we use engine oil with an API rating of SL or lower. By lower, he means lower on the alphabetical scale of the second letter. For example SK or SJ and on down the scale. Such oils will allow the ZDDP, that you add, to adhere to the cam and tappets. Ed says these oils are available but are hard to find. This recommendations would apply to older motorcycles, motor scooters and other small engines that do not have roller cam followers. Dale Dewberry won the $25.00 Burns Cox Attendance Drawing. He also drove his 36 Ford to the March meeting at Will s Machine Shop. Raffle Tickets Please return the proceeds from selling your 6 engine raffle tickets to: Wayne Deitrich, 2710 Satinwood Drive, Roswell, GA Checks should be made payable to: 2012 Eastern National Meet Thank you to the members who have supported the meet by selling raffle tickets. Members have sold $1010 worth of tickets!! (so far)

22 Sundown In Tucker Twenty members and guest got together Saturday evening, March 3 at the Blue Ribbon Grill. I hear they enjoyed good company and good conversation. I missed it, cause I was celebrating my birthday, a big birthday, a really big one. My six children and stepchildren and their off springs came from Chicago, Washington D C, Nashville, and Jacksonville for a family reunion / birthday celebration. It was the first time we have all been together in years. It was a rewarding and memorable weekend. Meeting Minutes, March 6 th, 2012 Regional Group 24, Early Ford V8 Club of America Hosted by Wills Machine Shop. President McIntosh called the meeting to order at 7:30 PM President McIntosh led the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance. Bill Swilley gave the Invocation. Break for supper. Meeting was reconvened at 8:15 PM President McIntosh thanked Will, Mark and Derek, owners and operators of Wills Machine Shop, for hosting the meeting and contributing the supper. The minutes of the February meeting were not available due to the absence of the club secretary at the meeting, they will be provided later. Treasurer Lamar Hart reported a February ending balance of with 97 dues paying members. Approved VP Padovano gave the meeting schedule for the next 2 months, April 3 rd at JDK collision, in Snellville, May 1 st at Miller powder Coating in Lilburn. Upcoming Club Events March 24 th at Reichel s car barn, spaghetti dinner, bake sale, parts auction. April 8 th Easter parade April 14 th car/air show Peachtree city April 8 th Tucker cruise-in May 28 th Dacula Memorial Day parade 10:00. Guest speaker Ed Preston gave a very informative talk on the problems with modern motor in our flathead engines. Modern engines with roller tappets require oil that is very destructive to our older engines. He recommended we use only oil with API rating of SL or the new racing oil available through Wills machine shop. Tonight s attendance 31. Being no further business the meeting was adjourned. Attendees: Bob Padovano, Dan Rolader, Wayne Dietrich, Jerry McIntosh, Ed Preston, David Jumper, David Quam, Ken and Jean Wells, John Trout, Fred Lindquist, Carl Smith, Don Morris, Dale Dewberry, Wayne Hicks, Bill Swilley, Lance Bucky, David Posey, Paul Harrelson, Lamar Hart, David Early, Doug Smith, Jean Smith, Harold Smith, Joe Smith, Mark Hodges, Will Hodges, Derek Piper, Frank Sessions, Jerry Reichel, Faron Stephens.
