Jerry Reichel REPORT ON EVENTS DELTA MUSEUM TOUR Saturday dawned clear, which was a change from the recent weather patterns, and nineteen members, spouses, and guests met at the McDonalds at Clairmont & I-85. Joe Smith & Bear came by to see the group off. Jerry Reichel led the group on their way onto I-85 promptly at 9:00 A.M. The group traveled down I-85 without incident to the Virginia Ave exit and then to the Delta Airline Museum. As the group was parking, they were met by Bob & Ann Butler. The group went into the museum promptly at 10:00 A.M. Everyone went through the museum at their own pace. There is a great deal to see that includes a DC-3, both a Stinson and a Travel Air, and the Boeing 767 Spirit of Delta. The exhibits are quite extensive and well done. Following the tour, many participants could not pass up a purchase in the gift shop. The group drove to the Barbeque Kitchen on Virginia Avenue that was a short drive from the museum. The owner had a room reserved for the group. Everyone gave their order and the meals came promptly. The meals were tasty and more than enough to satisfy this group s hunger. After lunch, everyone said their goodbyes and headed home. This was certainly an enjoyable tour and an opportunity to get the cars out in the sun.
4 Do You Know......Frank Arnold? Frank was born in Philadelphia in 1931, purchased his first car - a 1933 Plymouth at age 16, then owned a Washington Blue 1937 Ford slant -back sedan that he drove through college, graduated from Penn State in 1953 with a degree in Metallurgical Engineering and worked his first job at Lukens Steel in Pennsylvania. While serving his military duty, Frank became interested in mission. With no thought of entering pastoral ministry he attended seminary then went to work as a metallurgist at Reynolds Metals in Richmond. He volunteered as a chaplain in prison ministry, serving at the Virginia State Prison Farm near Richmond. While at Reynolds he was awarded a patent for bonding aluminum to stainless steel in a rolling mill. The Al/SS clad material was used to manufacture frying pans. The aluminum was the outside of the pan and distributed the heat uniformly over the surface. The SS cooking surface would not stain nor corrode. While in the Army Frank met Hope, an Iowa farm girl who had come to Philadelphia to train as a nurse. They were married in 1956, and recently celebrated their 58th anniversary. They worked as church pastor and wife before accepting a missionary call to Brazil from the Presbyterian Church. Frank and Hope arrived in Brazil just before the Archbishop of Rio de Janeiro led a national prayer and penance revival, credited with breaking the back of a Communist take-over of the country. Frank s missionary work lasted 33 years and was focused in the Amazon River Region, inhabited mostly by native subsistent farmers. The spiritual and health needs of the inhabitants were Frank and Hope s primary concern, but they also were active in community building, church building, teaching good nutrition and sanitation habits, health care and birth control. Frank assisted locals in establishing foundries to provide jobs, and showed the men how to make products that would benefit local families. One of the products he trained the men to produce was an aluminum charcoal stove with a bowl attached for cooking. Charcoal to melt the aluminum was made from the husks of Palm nuts. The Arnolds made many friends among the natives of the Amazon Region, and many are their best friends today. Frank and Hope returned home in 1996, when Frank retired from missions. Frank has two great car memories from Brazil. In 1969, he found a 1927 Model T deep in the interior of the Amazon Region. The T had to be loaded on a train and transported 300 miles through the rain forest back to Frank s home in Brazil. He restored it to perfection and the car now is part of a collection in a private museum in Brazil. The second find was a junk Model A which he had to load onto a small boat to float it back home. It was an exciting trip as the A nearly slipped off the boat into the Amazon River. Somehow Frank found an expert body man in the Amazon Region who restored the hulk to a nice car. During a 1970 furlough, Frank acquired a 1937 Ford 4-door slantback, like the one owned in college. He still drives it today. Frank has assisted Brazilian immigrants living in Metro-Atlanta to plant churches in association with American denominations. His advice to all is, One should remember what he was created for, which is get-right-with -God, and happiness will follow. Frank has been a member of RG#24 since by Wayne Deitrich
