7 Copperstate 1000 Sunday Morning Send Off For Copperstate 1000 An early Sunday A M send off for the annual 1000 mile driving and social event took place on April 6th at Tempe s Diablo Stadium. The annual event is sponsored by the Phoenix Art Museum Men s Art Council, Bell Lexus and other sponsors of status. It is open to pre-1974 automobiles of significance. Oh! the collector cars you see there. Approximately 80 cars were parked inside the stadium for spectators to view, lust and faun over, just before they are to leave on a four day tour of the southern part of Arizona. All cars are privately owned and I wonder if this is the only chance for exercise during the year. The cost is $5,950 includes meals and double occupancy accommodations. Usually there are many more applicants than the limit of eighty. The route is not disclosed in advance to protect privacy. There are many Arizona cars, but there are cars from many states, especially California. Greg Nelson, our photographer, counted at least six Shelby Mustangs along with a complement of Cobras. My favorite was an early 60 s Bill Devin designed Devin SS roadster with a Chevrolet engine. There was a colorful cornucopia of marques including Ferrari, Maserati, Jaguar, Mercedes Gull wing coupes and roadsters, Packards, Porsches, Corvettes and many others. In the west parking lot was an open car show of every make and model:(street rods, orphans, sports cars, and of course our Mustangs). There were probably around three hindered. There was a mishap we discovered as we were leaving. A 1957 Porsche spider that was leaving on the Copperstate 1000 tour was hit in the front end by an oncoming pickup that turned in front of him ruining his day. Both front fenders and the lower fascia were severely bent. The driver remained calm while answering questions and waiting for police. It was serious note to end a very enjoyable event of enjoying automotive history and beauty. Mustang Scramble. Mustang Scramble or Trying To Put Humpty Back Together On Saturday morning, March 29 th, 2014the cars and drivers met at Fiesta Mall s South side. Everyone arrived in high spirits. This driving event requiring map reading skills (maps were provided), a good relationship with your copilot, to answer all questions on a sheet about 12 locations in Mesa and still drive the shortest distance, in a timely manner. Some familiarity with Mesa may have been an advantage. It was easy to whiz by locations without noticing and do U turns to see it one more time. The Falcon Field location was particularly challenging due to a sign being removed after Bob and Alyce s survey trip but before the scramble. One group went so far as to interview security about the question. One driver and copilot were an hour late not too timely must have parked. Most of the competitors clocked in at 58 to 60 miles. Bev and Dave Freet came close with 58.5 miles. The shortest distance turned out to be 52.4 miles and was won by Mike and Greg in a Boss 302. They since have been banned from future competition! The Teams of Jo Ann and Kathy and Chevie and Tom were runners up. Thanks to Alyce and Bob Ancell for preparing and running such a fun event. They were responsible for cleverly choosing locations to answer questions. They set up lunch arrangements at Golden Corral Buffet on Power Road. We all enjoyed telling stories about our copilots and got answers to the questions. Awards were provided by Bob and Alyce. Cash prizes for first, second, and third were donated back to the club s general fund. It was agreed that we should do more fun and exhilarating events like this one. Thanks Bob and Alyce!
8 AAHC May 2014 Report Arizona Automobile Hobbyist Council May, 2014 Report By Tom Martin May 6 th General meeting and election was held at Mel Martin s Museum on I-17. There were several new cars in Mel s collection. The speaker was Dr. Robert Falco, ASU professor, speaking on Alternative Fuels for Arizona. Traditionally the meeting is an end of year meeting with food and refreshments. It was well attended by 43 members. The board plans to continue general meetings and board meetings throughout the summer to increase participation. The petition drive has been terminated. The board plans to file another petition to get the Toll Road issue on the 2016 ballot. A number of announcements about car shows were made regarding Prescott, Laveen, and others. Details can be found on our website or at desertcruisers.com The general meetings are open to all. General meeting are at 7 P. M., the first Tuesday of the month with location on the website. Information about time and place can be found on the website, Arizona Automobile Hobbyist Council.com.
9 Tech Talk Last month we spoke about ignition problems with early Mustangs. Fox Body Mustangs , also had problems with ignition switches, especially Mustangs equipped with tilt columns. The ignition switches in the Fox Body cars were mounted up in the steering columns. These switches were constructed much like the switches in the early Mustangs. The first sign of a potential problem shows up when you wiggle the column slightly, or change the position of the wheel while the car is running. The problem will show up by accomplishing the above and the car will die suddenly. Not a problem while setting in the driveway, but a real problem when you are driving down the road and the car dies in traffic along with the loss of steering and diminished braking power. If you can not correct this problem with the following recommendations you will have to find a replacement. The switch is no longer available, but sometimes you can find a complete good used column to swap out. The mechanical and electrical sections were joined together with the three tabs crimped between sections. First thing disconnect positive battery cable!!! Remove steering wheel with appropriate wheel puller. Check physical condition of ignition switch, if the crimps appear loose, try recrimping the tabs to provide a more secure connection. Either use 2 part epoxy, or JB weld to hold sections firmly together. Allow to dry/harden per product instructions. It is difficult to secure the sections of the switch with any external fasteners. Also check the cable that comes up the column to the switch. These cables shrink with age, and high temperatures like the Arizona heat. Loosen the fasteners holding the cable, even a little bit will help. Hopefully this article will prove helpful in correcting the situation. Finally after completing the above procedure, re-connect the positive battery cable and check that all functions associated with the column like: turn signals, horn, wipers, hi/low beam switch (if equipped) are all functioning properly. Any questions or suggestions please contact me. Dan M.
