1 February OFFICERS PRESIDENT JEFF MINX MEMBER OF THE MONTH Greg Nelson My name is Greg Nelson. I have been a member of the club since My father was the second owner of the Mustang. He purchased it shortly after my younger sister graduated from High School. I believe he had enough of the family cars and since my two sisters and I were out of the house he wanted to have something fun to drive. It was not his daily driving car he had a new Ford Thunderbird he used for that. My father joined the San Diego Mustang club and was an active member for many years. I have the trophies at home to prove it. VICE PRESIDENT Don Cook doncookptbs@msn.com SECRETARY Sharon Maloley eyzservices@yahoo.com TREASURER Doris Minx Pending SGT. AT ARMS Andy Seivers As my father aged, the Mustang became a permanent resident of his garage. He had a car cover for it and kept it concealed with several old blankets to protect the car. When my father found out he was terminally ill and only had a few years left to live, he wanted to clean up his affairs to help my mother out and knew the Mustang had to go. He had me take pictures of the car and said he was going to use them to sell the car. Every time I would ask him if he had any bites on the car he would tell me that he had not put the Old Mustang up for sale. I think the thought of the Mustang being sold deeply saddened him. One day, I drove out to San Diego to see him and told him I would purchase the car from him.

5 Member of the month Cont. I have never seen him so happy. I went down to the California Department of Motor Vehicles with him to transfer ownership. At the last minute, he told me he could not sell me the Mustang but instead wanted me to have it. I think he was testing me to see if I really wanted the car and was willing to purchase it. I transferred the car into my name and became the proud owner of a 1965 Mustang Convertible. Since the Mustang had been sitting in my Dads garage for several years, it was not up to the Six hour drive over the mountains and through the desert to my house in Phoenix. I ended up having the Mustang transported to phoenix where I was able to work on the car and make it drivable One of the things my Father believed in was keeping the car as close to original as possible. The only deviation from this was the addition of some chrome parts. I wanted to keep the Mustang in original shape like my Father had decided to but, one hot November day I was driving in the Veterans parade the Mustang overheated. I decided that in order to drive the Mustang here in Phoenix I was going to have to make a few modifications. I replaced the water pump with a high efficiency water pump, I replaced the four blade fan with a 6 blade fan, added an over flow tank, added a transmission cooler and replaced the radiator with an aluminum radiator. I also replaced the ignition points with a solid state ignition. Other than that, the Mustang is close to being original. I still have the original plates and keep the Mustang register in California. Here are some interesting facts about the Mustang. Because it was registered prior to the Department of Motor Vehicles using computers to maintain registration records, most of the information on my registration is blank. I suspect that when they typed the original information into the computer, they only typed in the VIN number and that it was a 1965 Ford. There is no model information at all on my registration. If I was ever pulled over, the registration only says it is a 1965 Ford. The Mustang was built sometime in the latter half of I have the original documents and it was purchased November 2 nd 1964 in San Diego for approximately $2,700. I am not sure how it ended up in San Diego because the VIN indicates it was destined for Cleveland. Surprisingly it was manufactured in Dearborn Michigan instead of the closer San Jose facility. From my research it sounded like the San Jose plant had not transitioned over from the 260 cubic inch engine and the original owner wanted the 289. My Father purchased the car for $6, That s more than double the original price. The car had 135,500 miles on the car. It now has 153,000 Miles on the car. The engine had been rebuilt and the car was in excellent condition when he purchased it. My dad wanted to keep the car in original shape so he never made any changes to the car other than routine maintenance. My Father maintained detailed records of the car. The first tank of gas cost him $9.91 at $1.38 a gallon. His annual registration was $27.00 a year. My registration is now almost $90 a year and as you all know gas is higher than $1.38 a gallon. I enjoy the meetings and events that the club sponsors.

12 Arizona Toll Roads Issue Taken from the West Valley View Newspaper December 4, 2012 Who wants toll roads? Let me tell you what your Arizona state legislature and governor are planning to do for you. They want to provide toll roads to drive on. You don t get to vote on this, they know what is best for you. You can plan on paying 10 to 15 cents per mile tolls in addition to the 18 cents per gallon of gas tax. Plus you gave the feds 18.5 cents per gallon on the same gallon. Oh, and that s not the worst part, the roads will be built, owned and operated by a foreign company. The state will turn over to these foreign entities all your personal information so that when they bill you for driving on their road they will know all about you. Now you ask, where do these foreign companies get the money to do this? They borrow it from our federal government at about 2 percent interest. You think the state of Arizona will never have toll roads! They have passed a law allowing them to seize your car if you don t pay for tolls, and we don t have any toll roads in Arizona now. Do I have your attention yet? John Wazorick
