1 MUSTANG CLUB OF MID-MICHIGAN JUNE 2015 (VOLUME 17 - ISSUE 06) Horsin Around The Official Monthly Newsletter of the Mustang Club of Mid Michigan Member Spotlight: Getting to the Fox! S pending my teenage years in the 60 s, I got to experience the muscle car era first hand. On second thought, maybe second hand would better describe it because many of my friends owned them and I had the pleasure of admiring them and getting an occasional ride. What does this have to do with our 1982 Mustang GT? It will become more clear as i explain. Shopping for my first car was easy. The (289/4-speed) I brought home on a test drive from Burton- Moore Ford, parking it so my dad couldn t see the smashed in passenger side door, seemed to me to be the perfect car. Like I said, the shopping part was easy; the buying part was more difficult. My dad s idea of my perfect car was my aunt s 1963 Falcon Futura ragtop, powered by the 170 CID power house. The only thing that could make things worse would be a 2-speed automatic. Yes, it did. It turned out to be a dependable car. I could depend on loosing every race I had the dumb idea to accept. Now, for the reason for this story. In 1990, our son, Matt, was in need of a car. In a desire to not subject him to the same fate I had endured, we looked at an 82 Fox body GT. The Boss is Back was Ford s ad slogan for these first GT s since The H.O. 302, 4-speed car, rated as the quickest domestic car produced in 1982, was quite acceptable to Matt and I. His mom, Jean, seemed on board too, for she was also born with a lead foot. Even it s 145,000 Jean and Vic Trisch by Vic Trisch miles were just considered as extras. In 1991, the Mustang was parked due to a gasket leak and the purchase of a four wheel drive Blazer which was better suited for winter commutes to Ferris State University. So there the Mustang sat in our garage for 20 years. It dawned in me one day - I m a very quick and strategic thinker - why not get Matt involved in a father-son bonding car project? Well, it turned out that Matt was busy bonding with his own children, and too far away to participate. So he sold the car back to Jean and I, at which point, I started bonding with myself! Upon review, I realized the title was still in my name. I told you I was a quick thinker! The car was taken to a talented mechanic who agreed to do a mechanical restoration including brakes and brake lines, bearings, fuel tank, joints, and all things that make for a safe and dependable car. Did I mention the engine? This is why I told you of my high school humiliations with the Falcon. I asked for some extra horsepower; anything over 400 would be fine, I thought. After nearly two years, we got the car back Jean and Vic Trisch s 1982 Mustang GT looks ready for another show or cruise! 2 M-24 John Clor featured guest speaker at the June Strawberry Shortcake Membership Meeting! R.S.V.P. by Fri., June 12 tolevittes by phone or by at: You've read his columns in Mustang magazines for years. You've seen him talk Mustangs on The History Channel, SpeedVision, Velocity and various videos. You may even own his limitededition, sold-out hardcover history book "Mustang Dynasty." Now you can meet him in person! Noted auto journalist and author John Clor, a former SVT PR man who today manages Enthusiast Communications for Ford Performance, will be the Guest Speaker at our club s Strawberry Shortcake Meeting. John will be making a Mustangs in Ford Performance History presentation, followed by a Q&A session to answer your Mustang questions. Don t miss this chance to hear and meet one of Ford s best-known Mustang spokesmen during our meeting! Pat and Quentin Levitte, longtime members, are hosting our June membership meeting, featuring John Clor, on the 15th at their home, 150 (North) Fenner Road, Caro. An R.S.V.P. is requested so they plan on providing delicious Strawberry Shortcake in an MCMM tradition started by the Bentleys many years ago. Gilford Rd M-81 To Saginaw Higgins Rd Watrousville Fenner Rd Pat & Quentins X CARO To Lapeer Spotlight, Continued from page 1 (never tell your mechanic you re in no hurry), and I could not be happier. The car runs and rides great, and looks OK for a oncepainted, unrestored car. I wish I was back in high school again! Recapping, in 1990 we bought a Mustang GT for our son. In 2011, we bought it back to begin investing money for it s repair, and in 20xx, our plan is to give it back to Matt. How s that for quick thinking? The Trisch s were married in 1970, while Vic was a student at CMU, and Jean worked on campus. They bought a 69 Mach I with 351 Windsor in Yellow. The car - Jean loved it - was sold after Matt was born - big mistake! The Trisch s have owned several other Ford products, including a 64 Fairlane, 74 Mustang II, and an 88 Mercury Cougar SE - their first new car purchase as a married couple. Also owned were several Ford pick-ups. The couple have two children, Matt, and his sister, Kristy. Three grandchildren that luckily live nearby keep them busy along with travel and winters in Florida. In addition to the 82 GT, the couple also own a yellow, 2000 GT convertible, Spring Edition, one of only 971 manufactured. Both Vic and Jean are active in the MCMM. HS 2015 Vic and Jean Trisch with their 1982 Mustang GT, left, and the 2000 Spring Edition GT convertible. The 2000 also includes black graphics package on the hood and side scoops behind the doors. Both Mustangs look like they are show ready! PAGE 2

3 President s Corner Greetings to All: Summer is upon us and the car shows have started. I want to extend a huge thank you to everyone that helped with the Bottom Line Car Show and fund raiser on May 16 th. The weather was good not great but, for May in Michigan it worked out well. I am continually amazed at the number of hard workers that come out in support of our club activities. It makes the shows more fun and it is a very positive reflection on our organization. I ran across a Hemmings Magazine recently and saw an ad for an RM Classic Car Auction in Plymouth, Michigan, on Saturday, July 25, The contact information for potential sellers and buyers is or, for those that might wish to attend. I know it is the same day as the HorseSense 4.6 This week, I read... I read the updated story of Quentin Levitte s 1969 Mustang Super Cobra Jet told by his son, Nathan, in the MCA s Mustang Times magazine. The story originally appeared in our Horsin Around in the Nov to Jan editions. It was cool to see the article in one piece in a national magazine with updated information. I caught up on my reading of the Ford Performance newsletter, Fast News, that is a part of John Clor s job for Ford Performance. Now here is an excellent newsletter to see what s going on in Ford s performance realm, and so much more. Check it out at or Click on the Newsletter icon, at to p right to sign up. Click here Fast News has a Ford Fan Spotlight that highlights Mustang owners like us, the latest Ford and Ford Racing news, new parts, and articles on other Ford products. You need to get this newsletter! See the box above that shows you where and how to get it. At our May meeting, we established a committee to By Al Selesky MCMM President Capital City Car Show, but I thought I would mention it. Some time ago I promised the club I would do some research on insurance costs. To date I have identified four major firms and am in the process of getting competitive quotes. The insurance companies are JC Taylor, Grundy World Wide, Heacock Classic Car, and Hagerty. If you know of any more, let me know and I ll put them in the mix. Lastly, Jan and I would like to invite the club to our house after the Coleman Car Show, between 3:30 and 4:00, on Saturday, June 13, Please let us know if you plan on attending so we can have the right amount of food and liquid libation. See you at the next meeting (and board meeting) on Monday June 15, Drive often and drive safe. HS By Tom Welsh MCMM Newsletter Editor review and revise our web site, so I read up - again - on what other Mustang sites are doing, and our committee is working to make more improvements to better serve both our members and the guests that look to our site for the latest information on our club s events and plans. I just read that our not-so-friendly BowTie competitor has just announced a revised, 2016 version of their always late-to-the-party Camaro. Seeing photos and reading the article in Motor Trend tells me that Ford is on the right track with our Mustang. GM is adding a turbo-four with just 270 hp and continues the bunker-look widow treatment to even shorter openings that looks so confining - and ugly. The front end, if you haven t yet seen it (also appearing on Hot Rod s cover). looks a lot like any new Lexus model, which is one of my top choices for front end uglyness. Read this as an invitation: I m really looking forward to the June membership meeting with our special guest speaker, John Clor. I ve had the opportunity to hear him speak on several occasions, and have enjoyed discussions with him at MOCSEM meetings. He is, I believe, single handedly getting long overdue respect for the Mustang II. He presented the John Clor Award to our own Steve Caesar for his Mustang II at last year s MOCSEM show. I expect to see you there! HS PAGE 3 Al

4 MCMM Show News Bottom Line / Armed Forces Day Show Bottom Line Auto Service owner, Roger Nowaczyk, put together a successful 4th Anniversary Car Show on Armed Forces Day, May 16th. For the Mustang Club of Mid Michigan, it was our 11th Armed Forces Day show and we turned out in good style to fill our position in registration, parking, judging, prize drawings, and award announcements. About 75 cars of a broad cross section of American Iron - and a couple of foreigners - participated. Attendees kept coming in up to and even past the noon registration deadline. The Colors were hosted and presented by the Saginaw County Veteran s Memorial Plaza, and called to attention by the playing of the Star Spangled Banner at 11:00. The Plaza was also represented by volunteers that manned a table with information on the Plaza. Our club members sold prize raffle tickets and held a 50/50 drawing with all proceeds going to the Plaza. Together, these two promotions garnered $364 that will be a direct donation to the Plaza. The show was held at the same location as last year, the old Shooters Night Club, 8845 Gratiot Ave., (M-46), west of Saginaw, in Thomas Twp... Show hours ran from 11 am to 4 pm. A key plus was that, unlike last year, the weather cooperated with cool but The Good The Good reasonable temps and a dry day overall. Check out the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, in the photos below.
