1 MUSTANG CLUB OF MID-MICHIGAN JULY 2015 (VOLUME 17 - ISSUE 07) Horsin Around The Official Monthly Newsletter of the Mustang Club of Mid Michigan Member Spotlight: by Tom Dick s 50th Choice Welsh T he 2014 North American International Car Show (NAICS), Detroit's annual showcase of all that's new, was quite an inspiration to club member Dick Lebsack. The 2015 Mustang had just been announced in December, 2013, and Dick thought about the car show coming up in January (2014). Then, he got a call from his friend, State Rep. and former Bay City Mayor, Charlie Brunner, with an invitation to go to the Friday Night, Black Tie NAICS Charity Gala Event. After a short - very short - consideration, Dick said, "I'm game." Charlie had the tickets and rooms for the overnight stay; Dick's only requirement was to pack a bag with a tuxedo in it. Well, after the Gala's opening at 4:00, the two had a great time enjoying the food, listening to singer, Cheryl Crow, and then, the opening of the show. Dick and Charlie headed right for the Ford display where Dick was totally taken by the Mustang GT Convertible on the stand. While he Dick Lebsack and his Tux Dick at Midland Ford getting the keys couldn't sit in the display car, he fell in love with the design. Of course, the show was in January of last year, and the 2015 Mustang didn't go on sale until last fall. Dick had to hold back because he was ready to order, but... he wanted a convertible, and they could not be ordered until this past January. Chad Wilson, of Midland Ford Lincoln, knew of Dick's plan, and called him as soon as the convertible was available to order. Dick's choice was a premium GT convertible in the optional, ruby red tinted clearcoat metallic, with the 50 Years Appearance Package. Dick ordered the car in January, and took delivery in early March. He was really taken by the limited edition (limited to 1,964 examples) 50th Anniversary Mustangs, but wanted the convertible and really didn't want the extra expense of the short run edition. The available, 50 Years package was a good compromise that included some to the desirable elements of the limited edition model, and was still a one-year-only option. The longtime MCMM member barely got to enjoy his new Mustang, when he was diagnosed with a flex tear on his Achilles Tendon, What s Inside for July: 1 Member Spotlight: Dick Lebsack 2 John Clor speaks at June Shortcake meeting Member spotlight cont. 3 President s Corner Editor s HorseSense Cool City Show 5 Ford Dealers in Mid-MI Spotlight Request Treasurer s Report 6 June Meeting Minutes 7 MCMM Board & Appointed positions Events Schedule 9 Classified Ads Roster Updates 10 MCMM Web & Facebook Contacts Other club contact info. 2 John Clor featured guest speaker at the June Strawberry Shortcake Membership Meeting! MCMM Members present at our June meeting met, and heard a presentation by noted auto journalist and author John Clor, a former SVT PR man who today manages Enthusiast Communications for Ford Performance. John was the Guest Speaker at our club s Strawberry Shortcake Meeting held at the Levitte residence in Caro on June 15th.. John presented Mustangs in Ford Performance History followed by a Q&A session answering ourford and Mustang-related questions. Pat and Quentin Levitte, longtime members, hosted the meeting and offered up delicious Strawberry Shortcake and other treats, a tradition started by Ruth and Stan Bentley many years ago. Clor s presentation covered many aspects of the Mustang in Ford s history from a marketing, design, and performance standpoint. See June Minutes for more information on the meeting. H-A On behalf of the MCMM, our president, Al Selesky, presented John Clor, featured speaker at our June membership meeting, with an original Ford Wrench Plaque, created by Quentin Levitte. Spotlight, Continued from page 1 requiring first a protective boot, then a cast. This really compromised Dick's driving, rendering his behind-thewheel time, as of this writing, to just over a thousand miles. In fact, it was his friend, Charlie, that turned over that first thousand miles. Dick commented that as an MCA member, he enjoys reading the MCA monthly magazine, Mustang Times. A favorite column is the Ford Performance Corner by John Clor, and, as is usually the case, Dick found a close tie to the article in the June, 2015 issue. In it, John tells another of his great stories about Sam and Nina Graybill, owners - like Dick - of a first generation Mustang convertible and a sixth 2015 Dick s first and sixth generation red Mustang 289 & 302 V-8 Convertibles. generation convertible. Dick saw "his" car(s) in the Clor article, right down to both cars being the same red, and both having the same color convertible tops with the 2015 GT having the same options including the 50 Years Appearance package. Dick enjoys being fully active and supportive of his memberships in the MCA as well as the MCMM. He is a past president of our club, has served on many committees over the years, and is currently overseeing our club merchandise offerings. Dick plans to keep his 1966 in the family and on the road for local shows and events and enjoy the '15 for longer trips and events where comfort is more important. Side note: John Clor has commented to us on several occasions that Mustang club members, as well as other Ford product club members, are a real source of new car sales prospects. You can look at our own club for examples to back that up. Members Carol and Harry Davis, featured in the May newsletter, just purchased a 2015 Mustang EcoBoost coupe, and many other MCMM members own Ford products. Some are purchased new; others used, but all show the support of our fellow Mustang club members for Ford products. H-A PAGE 2

3 President s Corner Greetings to All: Happy July 4 th to all We have reached the high water mark of summer and so far it has been good. As reported, we had ten Mustangs from our club at the Coleman Car Show; we have attended/participated in the Birch Run, Grand Rapids, and Frankenmuth shows/parades; and, we had a wonderful speaker and delicious strawberries at Pat and Quentin s home. John Clor did a great job and we need to continue to look for fun/informative activities. A few items I want to mention coming up soon 1. Lori and Jan will be a providing a list of Stampede workers we will need for the September show with job descriptions and event requirements. I expect the July and August meetings will be dominated by these Stampede topics. 2. I am sure Tom Welsh and Dick Lebsack will be reporting in this newsletter a list of activities and volunteers that helped on the Cool City Car Show in Bay City held this past weekend, on July This is one of our key sponsorship shows and one we (as a club) have agreed to support. 3. Del Zimmerman put together a list of Ford dealerships in our area. I will get a list to everyone in our club so we may make personal contact with each By Al Selesky MCMM President of the dealerships to sell our club, create sponsors for our activities, and, possibly have the dealerships give each Mustang customer a flyer on our club. This is a win-win for us, Ford, the dealerships, and their customers. Please take a look at the list and let me know who is going to contact who. This is a big step in our club s promotion and can pay big dividends. 4. I know from time-to-time, we have had discussions about the MCA and its benefit to us. Earlier this month, I sent a detailed to Allen Steward (head of judging) at the MCA, suggesting we work toward uniformity of judging criteria, scoring, and processes for small, medium, and large Mustang shows. I believe we can get more people to participate in all shows if the participants know what to expect from us as they climb the ladder of larger, more detailed type shows, as well as what s expected of them. Allen sent me back a very nice , thanking me for my input and offered his agreement. If we are going to keep this sport alive, we need to make sure we include everyone, from all age groups, and all car qualities. I was not sure I was going to get a response, but it was heartwarming to receive an appreciation for a suggestion from our sized group. My hat s off to Allen and the MCA. Good driving, and good tidings, H-A Al HorseSense 4.6 By Tom Welsh MCMM Newsletter Editor Out with... In with... The Old The New We redesigned and printed 500 of our membership brochures this spring. I have reproduced them at the left. Please check your glove boxes or other places for the old ones, with the single Mustang Grill photo, and recycle them! The new ones have the 64-1/5 and 2015 Mustang photos on them. We have actually given out all 500 copies to members, dealers or potential members, and will be reprinting them. You can pick up copies to carry in your glove boxes to give out next time you are at a meeting or event. Elsewhere in the newsletter, is a list of Ford dealers mentioned in Al s newsletter. Note that Midland, Hagen, LaFontaine and McDonald (tentatively) are currently 2015 sponsors. Their ads appear in the newsletter. Each sponsor has a date on their ad now to let you know the status. A special thank you to our members that were able to help park cars at the Cool City Cruize for a Cause on Friday and the Show on Saturday. Members also helped direct entrants, judge Ford product cars, roll and hand out posters, and membership brochures. After the excellent meeting and dessert at the Pat and Quentin Levitte (Thanks to both of you for hosting the meeting!), our next meetings will resume at Fritz s Restaurant in Richville (M15 at M46 at 7 PM). We hope to see you there! H-A PAGE 3

4 Reflections on the Cool City Car Cruize & Show Reflecting on the just finished Cool City Car Cruise and Show, both events took place under near-perfect weather, for the first time in over two years. Almost 300 cars participated in the Cruize for a Cure event on Friday, July 10th, running from Hampton Twp., through Essexville, eastern Bay City, then on to Midland Street on Bay City s west side, finishing at Bay Lanes on Euclid, just south of Wilder Road. Dick Lebsack lead the cruise with this year s American Cancer Society cruise marshall. Thirteen MCMM members organized and parked the estimated 300 cars in the cruise at the Mall, then sprinted to the Bay Lanes destination to help park the cars at the Street Party that ended the cruise. On Saturday, many MCMM members gathered on South Washington in our designated area for the MCMM Show News show itself. MCMM members joined with others to help park cars, judge the Ford brand vehicles, promoted our club and the fall show, and give out club brochures and posters to Mustang lovers. A big Thank you to all the members that helped on both Friday and Saturday. Members Dick Lebsack, Charlie Reinhardt and Tom Welsh represent the club on the steering committee that runs the annual show. The committee meets monthly (Jan. to Sept. in Bay City for planning and organizing the event. Together with the sponsors and participants, the group has given over $180,000 to the Bay District of the American Cancer Society. It is expected to go over the $200,000 level with this year s expected donation.
