The Ride for Father Fred and the Salvation Army Food Drive are the two major community fundraising events held by this chapter. Congratulations to all who participated for helping make a positive impact for those in need. Moving ahead, I want to encourage everyone to attend our chapter picnic on August 19 th. POSSE RIDE UP-DATE FROM MIKE O CONNOR We are now in Missoula, Montana. We ve traveled just over 4,200 miles since we left home. There are about 550 riders from around the world traveling with us. Tomorrow we leave for Kenniwick, WA, then on to Portland, Oregon for the final Dealer Party and then home again. By the time we get back to Traverse City, we will have almost 8,000 miles under our belts. In Wilmington, Delaware, we met a woman from the Sherwood Chapter in England traveling by herself. We adopted her and have been tour guides across the US. Some of us have been talking about going to Great Britain and touring England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland next year. She has agreed to be our guide if we go. As most everyone knows, we had some bad luck early in the trip. It happened about a mile before we got to the York, PA Harley Plant. As we came up to a light, Lew hit his brakes on an oil spill and went down. Besides the damage to his pride, he suffered only minor scrapes and bruises, some scratches to the fairing (which has a band-aid on it), saddlebags, and engine guards. Dick managed to stop on the oil slick, but slipped and did a slow roll when he put his feet down. Again, minor scratches to some of the bike parts, but none to him. I was the luckiest. I hit my brakes to avoid the two downed riders and found myself skating on oil. My advanced training kicked in and I was able to bring the bike under control, get out of the lane and kiss a cop car (she happened to be stopped in the left lane at the light) with my Lew Kirchner, Dick Rusas and Mike O Connor (w/guest from England) Posse riders (L-R): Dick Rusas, Jim Dow, Lew Kirchner, Mike O Connor and Jim Johnson front tire.. no damage to the bike and only a little black from my tire on the cop car. We ve experienced beautiful weather, thunderstorms and 100+ degree temperatures since leaving, kind of a smorgasboard of summer weather. Hope Father Fred was a success. See you in August! Mike O Connor

7 Page 7 WOW! What a great weekend for the Father Fred ride. A great big THANKS to all those involved. It was a tremendous effort put forth for a very worthy cause. As I rode along on the poker run on Saturday my mind began to wander a bit (yep, it was a short trip) and I started thinking about all those who are not as fortunate to belong to such a great group of people known as motorcyclists. Riders from all over came out with all different types of two and three wheelers to support a common goal. Ride, have fun, and somehow give back to our community a token of their appreciation. I also began to think about the choices we make every day. As soon as we are young enough to crawl and walk, we are told of the dangers of the world, do not put your finger in the electric socket, be careful going up and down the stairs, etc. So you say, what does that have to do with motorcycles? Over and over again this weekend I heard riders say, I like the hand signals your group uses, it makes me feel safer and I sure do not want to put my bike down. The choices we make on our bikes I believe follow us when we are in our four wheel cages of steel. We do not run red lights, run stop signs, drive like madmen, slam on our brakes without notice, and turn in front of people. We are much more conscious of our surroundings, and along with that, we are aware of what we do and the consequences from those actions. As a whole, I see motorcyclists obey the rules of the road. Sure, there will always be those out there who push the envelope and travel way too fast, weaving in and out of traffic, and doing wheelies on the roadways. But those are the choices those riders make, and if they screw up, they are likely to be the ones who pay for it. Like everything else, it gives all of us a bad rap. We had to leave downtown early Saturday evening to join a small group of friends to go see the Moody Blues at Interlochen. We (my wife is almost always with me on the bike, she only lets me ride to work by myself) were in the lead of four bikes. On South Long Lake Road we got behind two vans when suddenly the second van decided it was going to try and pass the first one. Yep, that s right, on that road, looking ahead of the first van, I saw a vehicle pull out into the other lane and head towards us. I think to myself, self.this could get real ugly real fast! Almost without thinking I m off the gas, hand goes out to warn the rest of the group, on the clutch, and brakes, at about which time the vehicle passing the van sees the other vehicle and pulls back in. Now that was close, but that is how quickly things happen, even at 45mph. Ok, so another what s that got to do with safety? By now, every one knows how strongly I feel about safety, taking safety classes regularly and practicing bike handling. But the other thing I believe is the quality of people I choose to ride with (yep, there is that CHOICE word again). I enjoy riding with people who have been on the road for a long time, and I feel I can learn from them, because I see the way they ride. I also believe there are some things out there that I can share with others, to make the road safer for us, hence the New Members Ride. Many years ago, when I played sports, one of my coaches always mentioned sure it is fun to win games, but if you win all the time, it means that you are not playing quality teams, and by playing those teams, you have the opportunity to learn new things. So, keep on challenging your skills, fine tune yourself into a really good riding machine, and every time you get on your bike, give a tip of the helmet to the big safety guy in the sky and thank him for the opportunity to participate in this fine sport. Tom Whilden, Safety Director HARLEY DAVIDSON GEARING UP FOR 105th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATON Plans have been made for those of you who are interested in attending the anniversary celebration in Milwaukee,WI. 15 rooms have been booked at The Radisson Hotel North Shore Price: $ per night Telephone: Wed., August 27th thru Sunday, Aug. 31, 2008 Any members interested in participating should call and make your reservation as soon as possible. RIDE LIKE A PRO MARK YOUR CALENDARS! The Ride Like a Pro class will be held Saturday, September 29. Much more to follow as we finalize plans for this really neat class on bike handling. I m expecting two sessions AM and PM. There will be bikes per session. The cost is $ per person, and Harley will reimburse $50 of that cost. NEW MEMBER RIDE Friendly reminder! August 13th at 6pm is our next New Members Ride. Terry Coates/Shelly Dayton John Emanuel working the crowd with 50/50 tickets Eric Fischer and Kris VanDeusen Lew Widrig The success of the Father Fred fundraiser lies entirely with the Northern Chapter H.O.G. What a great job by our organizers and the multitude of volunteers. Without all of you this annual event would be hard to accomplish. This year s event brought in the following numbers: Close to 300 entries for Saturday s Poker Run; More than 400 bikes and 600 riders participated in the ride to Old Mission Peninsula A grand total of approximately $13, will be presented to the Father Fred Foundation by the Northern Chapter H.O.G. We had great media coverage! Did you see the Record Eagle the day after the event? Front page news and a whole page of pictures. Our Director, Paul Jarboe, and our Membership Director, Vicki Beam, could be heard on the radio! Don t forget to thank the Traverse City Police Department for the wonderful escort through our beautiful area and the VFW post for providing a wonderful Biker Brunch! More than all of the above, our efforts will directly benefit those less fortunate in our community! Kudos to one and all! CLASSIC LEGEND TIMES

The following appeared in the Traverse City Record Eagle on Monday, July 30th in the Editorial Section: Cheers To the 600 or so motorcyclists who participated in the 15th annual Father Fred Foundation benefit ride. The event raised an estimated $13,500 for the local non-profit, which provides services to the area's low-income residents and families. Kudos also to the Northern Chapter Harley Owners for organizing and running the event. Each of the riders donated $15 to the ride and about 90 percent of the earnings go directly to those in need.
