3 PRESIDENT S LETTER Hello BMW club members, While I am writing this, it is bitter cold outside. I think the prediction for tomorrow morning is -4 here in Pewaukee. Luckily many of you visited the Chicago motorcycle show. I have to hear during the meeting what that was all about, as I was occupied with work during that weekend. It looks like my job at GE is getting more demanding every year. It is 9:30pm, and I am on the speaker phone with GE Shanghai while I am writing my article. What March events can we look forward to? March is traditionally the month for the frozen snot ride that starts off in the Riverwest district of Milwaukee. Don t miss this great event. I was there last year and had a great time. It all starts at the Fuel café at 8 am (818 E. Center street) on March 16th. At 9am we depart for the Nomad, 10am to café Lulu, 11am Franks power plant, and finally it all ends at the Palomino in the Bay View neighborhood. March is also traditionally the month of the President s opening ride, and for this year I have decided to do that on Saturday, March 23rd leaving Hardee s on Hwy 83 & I-94 at 10:30am. We will do some nice roads for an hour and a half and then find a place to eat where we can warm our frozen bones. Of course if you only want warm weather to ride in, then consider Daytona bike week if you don t mind being among the Harley crowd. This year Bike week takes off on March 8 and ends March 17. Next month around this time we should also have considerable more day light as the sun crosses the equator, and the days become longer than the nights. Daylight savings time starts March 10th. This coming meeting I will also ask for volunteers for our 2013 Round Robin. Volunteers are needed to host our club members for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Volunteers are also needed to lead the rides between the three destinations Also, Ron Feurer will be asking people to volunteer to be a ride captain this year. This means that you organize the club rides for a particular month. You can ask others to lead rides, or lead rides yourself. It is a very rewarding experience. I have always liked doing it, since I can determine the destination, like one of my favorite restaurants, or some historic place, a museum, a concert and so on. I encourage you to sign up. See you all on March 1st for the Monthly meeting. Ed Secretary s Report * Highlights from the February 1, 2013 Club Meeting Meeting called to order at 8pm. December minutes read by Tom S. 8 EVENTS/NEWS We would like to invite you and your members to join us for the AMA Sponsored Smoke Chasing Grand Tour 2013 (SCGT13). SCGT13 is a BBQ themed self-paced grand tour designed to combine your love of great food and great riding and is a perfect complement to your day trips, weekend rides, team rides, club rider events, and can easily be part of your long distance adventures and rallies. SCGT13 is open to all makes and models of motorcycle and all types of riders. Since our inception we have been joined by more than 700 riders covering the spectrum of motorcycle brands and riding styles. This is a truly open GT for all those who love to ride. This year we have changed the scoring format and added some new twists to keep the ride fresh. As always, we have incorporated bonuses we call Side Dishes which range from extremely challenging to the unusual and quirky. Our event can be completed in a single state or province or can include every province and territory in Canada and every state in the U.S. for those who enjoy long distance challenges. A rider simply documents visits to 20 or more BBQ and Smoke restaurants, streets or cities while taking photos featuring their motorcycle cycle, GT Flag and signs. The Grand Tour is extremely affordable at only $27. All finishers will receive a certificate and a chance to win prizes including free entry into rallies, cash, gas cards, a radar detection system, and a spot tracker in addition to the prizes customarily offered by the AMA (tires, gear, etc). We will also name a Grand Champion based upon points earned that will have bragging rights, a fancy plaque, and first choice of prizes. To reduce some of the guilt that may come with all of the riding, eating, and fun associated with SCGT13 we donate all event proceeds to the Eddie James Foundation for Children (AKA Eddie s Road). Eddie s Road is dedicated to changing the lives of abused and neglected children and is operated entirely by unpaid volunteers. You can register and learn more at The SCGT13 runs from March 1st to November 30, Registration will be open February 15th through June 30th, An open letter to the Wisconsin Club membership. Dear fellow enthusiasts, I'd like to take some time out from our busy riding schedules this winter to address a growing discourse among our ranks. It appears that we have a small group of ne'er do wells who have become a splitting headache in our collective craniums. Of course I m speaking of the WoM,The Women of Mayville. These "ladies" have been terrorizing the beautiful gateway to the Horicon Marsh Wildlife Area for some time now. Whether it has been cruising up and down Ruedebusch Ave, or rumbling with their main rivals, the Women of Mayberry over local turf, the impact this group has made on the local community and our club has been troubling to say the least. Their purpose appears to be two-fold. The first is nebulous, and the second is indefinable. But I digress. What chance does a decent, hard working family have of getting a delicious sandwich from the Main St. Quizno's, without being accosted by one or more of these hooligans? And need I mention the extra security that had to be hi red after the Audubon Days incident? I think not. I would like to suggest to these troubled females a possible name change. Perhaps the Women of Mayfair. You could have rides to go shoe shopping. Or perhaps you could peruse some frilly undergarments to entice the significant others in your lives. This change might finally bring long-awaited peace back to this Dodge County city. Next Month... A Reptile Dysfunction, Fact or Fiction. Submitted by John Policht 8
9 EVENTS/NEWS The BMW RA Rally Biltmore Estate Asheville, NC June 20th 23rd By Kent Skoug In 2007 my wife, Ursula, and I decided to retire from twenty-five years in the Seattle area. I have one of the best wives in the world. She flat out told me I WOULD retire while I was still able to ride. We started to decide on places to retire to (the Seattle area has great scenic routes and I can tolerate the rain, but not the tax structure) so we started to look around. Our children and grandchildren were just north of Atlanta, but there was no way in He** I was going to return to Atlanta and the congestion and traffic in that area. So, we decided on the mountain area of North Carolina in the Asheville area. Now, I once read that you cannot explain real mountains to an Easterner and you cannot explain hot and muggy to a Westerner. That is probably true. Out west the mountains are almost twice as high as they are in the east. But out west the climb is gradual and there are lots of sweepers. On the east coast you go up quickly and down just as fast. My friends, those are called switchbacks! Much like what you find in the Alps. But in the Alps you usually have twenty-five to fifty meters of straight road between the switchbacks, here it is one after the other and you do have to watch for gravel in the turns. It is a lot more challenging. I mentioned 2007 because that was the year we had decided to fly east and look at the Asheville area. Shortly after Christmas 2006 I was reading some of my magazines and I saw the BMW RA was having their national rally that year in Asheville at the Biltmore Mansion. I yelled to Ursula, Guess when we are going to Asheville and guess how we are traveling! She was able to guess! We were impressed with the area, the tax structure, the cost of housing, and the roads! In 2009 I sent her ahead and told her to buy us a home and in July I followed her. Other than totaling the R1200 RT in Kansas while heading to NC, I have had no regrets. However, that s another story. There is no state, other than Hawaii, that I haven t ridden in many times and I have never found riding that I have enjoyed as much as the North Carolina mountains. Many of you have heard about the Tail of the Dragon, believe me, it s overrated! I could show you a hundred routes with more curves, switchbacks, elevation changes and just plain fun, with less highway patrol and no 35 MPH speed limits! In fact, if you come to the BMW RA rally at the Biltmore in 2013 I ll show them to you! Since moving to the south-east I have joined four BMW clubs, the Upstate BMW Riders of Greenville, SC, the Knob Mountain BMW Riders of Morganton, NC, the Asheville BMW Riders of Asheville, NC and the BMW Riders of Knoxville of Knoxville, TN as well as becoming a Regional Representative for the BMW RA while still remaining a member of the Washington State BMW Riders. Currently I am an officer in the Asheville Chapter and for the rally I will be laying out the on-road rides. So, like I said, come on down and I ll show you! The cost for the rally this year for pre-registration is $65.00 per person for RA members and $75.00 for non-members which is really inexpensive because it allows full access to the Biltmore Mansion (camping will be on the grounds) which is usually a $50.00 charge by itself for a single day, and the rally fee is for the full three days. If you don t know about the Biltmore, look it up on line. It is the largest single family dwelling in the United States with 250 rooms, 33 family and guest bedrooms, 43 bathrooms, 65 fireplaces, 3 kitchens and an indoor swimming pool. They also have a hotel on the grounds and their own winery. The RA is the only organization that the Biltmore has ever allowed to camp on the grounds. They are also allowing us build a GS track fairly close to the camping area. The rally is June 20th to the 23rd. By the way, the trip and the rally can easily be done in a two week vacation period from anywhere in the continental United States. Ursula and I did it in 2007 from Seattle with a two day side trip to visit our children north of Atlanta after the rally and on our way home. Hope to see all of you in Asheville this coming summer. 9
