If you happen to be riding in a group with riders that you don't know ALWAYS leave room between you. You never know how much riding experience or bad habits they may have.

Reservation information can be found in the ABATE State news Letter. This is a very informative seminar on motorcycle rites from all over the world.

So remember when you are doing these runs and volunteering for other events that we are asked to partake in.

Please remember to always ride defensively, be aware of your surroundings and never ride beyond your ability. None of us want to be a statistic. If you happen to be riding in a group with riders that you don't know ALWAYS leave room between you. You never know how much riding experience or bad habits they may have. We have talked about it at the meetings and I want to remind everyone about the MRF Meeting of the Minds. 3 Page 3 Activities: Brenda Well hello everybody, do you believe it's already July? This months membership meeting will be on Sunday July 11th at the Harwood Post. It is our summer cookout and starts at noon for lunch and meeting and ride to follow. There will be several local and state politicians there so if you want to hear what they're all about you should be there too. Please bring a dish to pass, we will be having pulled pork sandwiches. South Suburban's Helmet Roast is from July 23rd-25th at Glenwood RV in Marseilles, for more info go to As usual the chapter will have a group area set up. Barb is taking care of making the arrangements. If interested please be at this months meeting to discuss. Hooters and Scooters is only two months away. We still have room for more anxious volunteers, so if you would like to help please me at activities@willcoabate.org. Right now we need some people to guide traffic at the stops for parking. This year is going to be a special one, we have a few surprises in store and your sure going to like them, I know I can't wait. For now, ride safe and have fun doing it! 4 Page 4 Legislative: Brian Hello, Will County Chapter, ABATE of Illinois continues to appeal the ruling that the Cycle Rider Training funds can be "swept" by the Legislature and put into the General Revenue Fund. The Appellate Court ruled that although the Fund is a legal trust, it's a "revocable" trust, meaning the Legislature can swipe it any time they decide to. We're now appealing the decision to the Illinois Supreme Court. We'll have to see what happens... The campaign season is upon us. We've already been asked to appear in some parades and represent our legislative friends, and we've been asked to help at least one campaign so far. I don't want what I'm about to say to be taken the wrong way--it's not my intent to insult anyone. BUT- -if you read our mission statement, you'll see that Will County ABATE is a political and educational organization; not a riding club, not a social club. We do put on a lot of events, which is great. That builds a strong bond between members and welcomes new members into the fold. We have a really large number of members who help out other causes, such as sending off soldiers, welcoming them home, and (God forbid) providing funeral escorts, which is

5 Page 5 the least we can do for these brave men and women. We have a bunch of members who help other organizations raise money. Again, great. But when it comes time to help *ourselves* it's always the same few people (mostly officers and backups, or PAC members) who step up to the plate. What do I mean by helping ourselves? It's simple. By helping the elected officials who've stood with us and helped us preserve our motorcycle rights, we're helping not only ourselves, but all the motorcyclists in the state. ABATE doesn't have the deep pockets that other organizations do. Hell, we can't even compete with a lot of individual contributors. What we DO have is man- and woman-power. We're known by politicians as the organization that can get it done--making signs, putting them up, handing out literature-- whatever it takes to get our friends elected. Will County Chapter is continually held up by ABATE of IL as an example of what a chapter should be. But we're in danger of losing that distinction because of apathy. When the call for help goes out, PLEASE respond, so we can continue to be (as State Coordinator Mike always says) FREE AMERICAN BIKERS! 7 Page 7 Safety & Ed: Monty Ladies & Gentlemen, The school year has come to an end, but that doesn't mean that our mission for the school year is over. On June 14, I was at Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais in the morning and Olivet Nazarene University in Rolling Meadows in the afternoon training 70 brand new Driver's Ed instructors. Some of these instructors will end up in Will county schools and others will end up in the surrounding counties. That leaves us with 48 presentations to 1147 students this year so far. Sorry about missing the June meeting, but the Blackhawks were playing in the Stanley Cup. The last time they won the cup was the year I was born and this is the year I am tying the knot, so the game had significance to me. Hockey is very near and dear to me. I still play hockey, I'm a Goalie. Yeah, say what you want, I'm not crazy, just a thrill junkie. Anyway, hockey is the greatest sport in the world and I had to witness Chicago winning the cup!!! I will be sending out renewals to people very soon but I would appreciate that if you see someone on the list that you know to remind them that it is time to renew. I have a brand new batch of applications so if you need any for you to carry on your bike you can pick them up either at the Post or get them from me at the next meeting.
