1 Scuttlebutt Happy Birthday America Model A Friends We had a good turnout for the two 4 th of July parades this year (Bethany and Edmond). Several of our members also attended the picnic at the Powell s home with the Heartland A s. We appreciate them inviting us the past few years to share in their celebration picnic. It is a great place to cool off, have a good lunch and visit with friends. The Tulsa Model A Club has announced the Fall Tour will be in the Hugo, OK area the weekend of October 27, 28 and 29. The hotel information is on the Activities page of this newsletter. It is best to get your reservations early as the rooms do go fast. The room rate is only $79/ night. We always have a great time at the Fall and Spring Tours. If you have never attended, it is a great time to get to know the club members better and have great food and fun. Sign up now before the rooms are gone at this rate. We also had a good attendance at our third Steering Committee Meeting for the 2017 MAFCA National Awards Banquet. Please continue to contact business for raffle items. If you have questions about raffle items, Don and Marilyn Mitchell and chairing the raffle and would be glad to talk with you. Registration forms and hotel reservations may also be made at this time on our website, MAFCA website or directly with the hotel. We will be having our ice cream social at the July meeting and we are a little short of volunteers to bring ice cream and desserts. If you were not at the June meeting to sign up, you may contact Sheryl Hoyle or just bring ice cream or desserts to share. Come to our July meeting and enjoy. See you there. VaughnCille Weidner President Tamara Brooks sent me a news bit this A.M. and confirmed my earlier report. The whole family left O.C. June 19 and drove the Cabriolet to Dubuque to the Tri-State Antique Auto Show, where the Cabriolet took third and Tamara won a third place trophy in the fashion show. They went on to Milwaukee and stayed with friends in the Mil. club drove home via Chicago in the Cabriolet all the way. Lots of fun!!!!! The Best of Show was won by Robert Schnieder of Tulsa our sister city, so we are close. When balancing the tires on type wheels, I used a strip type weight that is now used on the new mag or aluminum wheels. This weight comes by the roll and has a pressure sensitive backing and is marked in half-ounce segment. We removed the hub caps and used a modern tire balancing machine, stuck the weights on the inside of the wheel and painted the weights the same color as the wheel. 4 Page 4 "Tour to Hugo October 27-29, 2017 This year s Fall Tour is taking us down to the southeast corner of Oklahoma to the town of Hugo. Hugo has a history in lumber and as a railroad town but is know still today as a town where traveling circuses winter. For years, various circuses would travel around America with their huge tents offering shows of animals, acrobats and clowns plus much, much more. The people of Hugo really made the circus people feel at home and several circuses established roots in Hugo during the non-traveling winter months. Scuttlebutt but hotel reservations can now be made. Refer to attached information sheet for details. Ken and Tory Brust and Kent and Jeanne Washburn are the tour leaders. Call Hiway Inn Express, to reserve Friday and Saturday nights, discount rate of $60+tax/ night, Mention that you are with Tulsa Model A Ford Club. In 1993, one circus established the Endangered Ark Foundation as a home for some of the older elephants. We will visit on Saturday morning this Endangered Ark Foundation which offers a retirement home to the second largest herd of Asian elephants in North America. We will experience elephants in a very intimate and close up environment while the staff delivers an interactive educational presentation. 5 Volume 50, Issue 7 Page 5 Omaha Regional 2017 Jim and Vicky Yates At about 9:00 AM Sunday June 4, Vicky and I set sail on our adventure to Omaha Nebraska for the 2017 Nebraska Regional Meet. We had hoped to convoy with other Sooner members but circumstances forced the other members to cancel their Model A drive. The Tallys attended, but drove a modern car because of engine trouble with the A. So Vicky and I were on our own. We left our home in south Logan county and drove through Guthrie on highway 77. We continued on north through Mulhall, Orlando, Perry, Tonkawa and Blackwell. The temperature was in the low seventies with intermittent rain showers. It was quite comfortable. Vicky just about died laughing every time I turned on the vacuum wiper. It would wipe vigorously going down the hills and stop while going up the hills. In Kansas we went through Arkansas City, Winfield and El Dorado. We had lunch at Braum s in El Dorado. Five miles east of Eldorado we turned onto 177 to drive through the famous Flint Hills. The Flint Hills are scenic and the road is curvy, unlike most Kansas roads. We drove through a heavy shower near Strong City. We had to close the windshield to keep our feet dry, but it didn t last long. We bounced up and down on the brick streets in Council Grove, turned right on 56 to 75 and found a room at a Day s Inn in Topeka. We were tired, but it was a pleasant drive. The next day s drive to Omaha was quite a bit warmer with temps in the high 80 s. We drove up to our hotel, a Red Lion Inn, at about 2:00 PM with 494 miles on the speedometer. The Meadowlark Model A Club did a great job. The regional was well organized with interesting tours and great buffets with charming entertainment. The main tours were to the Strategic Air Command (SAC) Museum, Boys Town, Lincoln Highway, Omaha Zoo, and the Claas tractor factory. We were given a booklet that described the tours including detailed maps and driving directions both to and from the attractions. Also included in the booklet were tours to secondary attractions like the Union Pacific Museum in Council Bluffs Iowa. We went to all the featured tours except the zoo. We went to the Union Pacific Museum with the Tallys and the Brusts. We had one glitch. The first tour was Tuesday 6th to the Strategic Air Command museum. Our car wouldn t start for the first tour to the SAC Museum, but we able to hitch a ride with Ken and Fran Coleman from Iowa. Later figured out the cause was operator error. I wasn t turning on the Pop-Out switch correctly. The Okie contingent from our Sooner Club and our friends in the Tulsa Club had a good showing at the regional. Ralph and Connie Hudson won first and second place in the Hubley races. The Tallys won recognition in the car games. Best of all, Chuck and Lisa Ramsey took Peoples Choice with their AA Express Truck. The ride back home was not nearly as pleasant since we had mph southerly winds and temperatures in the mid 90 s. We arrived home after 494 miles and were pleased that our A performed so well.

BOX OKLAHOMA CITY, OK The SOONER MODEL A CLUB is a non-profit organization affiliated with the Model A Ford Club of America. All correspondence for the club should be sent to the address above. General Meetings are held on the third Tuesday of the months of January thru November. Meetings commence at 7:00 p.m. and are held at Will Rogers Garden Center at 3400 N.W. 36th in Okla. City. All members are welcome to attend the club s Board Meetings, which are held on the first Tuesday of each month at a location designated by the President and advertised in the Scuttlebutt. Membership dues are $20.00 per year. The primary requirement for membership shall be an interest in the objectives of the organization and a desire to participate in its activities. Actual possession of a Model A Ford is not a necessity. A member must be of good character as to be of benefit to the club, its functions and activities. An active member must be a member of the Model A Ford Club of America.
