1 WAGGA RSL AND COMMERCIAL CLUBS THLY NEWSLETTER TWO THOUSAND & FIFTEEN A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT... Welcome to 2016, I hope you all enjoyed the festive season and shared some memorable time with your family and friends. As the new President of your Club I would like to thank all the members and visitors who have supported our club during the past twelve months. Clubs can only survive and continue to assist their communities if they experience good patronage and thanks to all of you we continue to achieve this goal. Our clubs recorded a massive 321,735 visits and with a membership of 21,974 the Wagga RSL and Commercial Club is an integral part of the Wagga community. Your support has allowed us to donate over $450,000 to our community in the last twelve months. This has included free room hire to many charities, the free use of our courtesy bus and the Kids Club, immaculate bowling greens and countless organisations across the Riverina who have received monetary assistance. Your clubs supported 158 community groups during Both clubs employ a staff of 108 who are employed in the ten function rooms and five bars. Between our clubs we have two cafes and three restaurants on offer to members. We would like to thank Mat and Lauren Oates and their team who have successfully taken over the catering at both clubs which has been positively received by members and guests. Congratulations to our Managers of the RSL Motel & Apartments, Brendan and Bronwyne, who were recently awarded a Stella Stays property by Hotels Combined. Our four and half star Motel was this year complemented by the opening of two luxuriously appointed two bedroom apartments. They offer the ultimate in comfort, space and privacy for families and groups of up to twelve and are ideal for short and long term stays. A special thanks to every staff member and my fellow board members. I welcome Andrew Crakanthorp, Tim Rose and Adam Drummond who were recently appointed to the board. They bring with them different expertise and experience which will be beneficial for our clubs. Our board members can now be easily recognised with the new displays at the main entrances to our clubs has been a year of great respect as we honoured the centenary of the First World War. Many ceremonies were held across the Riverina with record numbers attending. The Wagga RSL Club officially opened the new Anzac Centenary Memorial at the front of the club which has been very well received by all. Most recently the RSL Club, in association with the RSL Sub Branch and Wagga City Council, unveiled the Kangaroo plaques in the Victory Memorial Gardens in a moving ceremony. We invite visitors, members and their families to pay their respects and take time to visit these locations will see major renovations to the top floor of the RSL Club. You will notice some changes to the restaurant and the coffee shop as well as some significant changes to the main bar and lounge area. Renovations are expected to start in mid January and be completed by late March/early April. Again a special thanks to all our staff for providing friendly and helpful service that results in exceptional member patronage to our clubs. On behalf of myself, the board and staff at both clubs we wish you all the best for a safe, happy and healthy Peter Thomas President Wagga RSL and Commercial Clubs

3 ENJOY YOUR CLUBS BOWLERS SUPPORTING WAGGA BASE HOSPITAL From left: Jack Whyte, Lex Plant, John Gerber, Pam Rawle & Andrew Bell On the 9th of December, Wagga RSL Men's Bowling Club kindly donated $3,716 to the Wagga Base Hospital Children's Ward. The generous donation was the biggest amount raised to date and was collected through a number of fundraising events held by the bowling club throughout the year. Special thanks goes to Lex Plant, Wagga Hot Bake in Morgan Street, Kooringal Butchery and other various business houses for their assistance in the fundraising efforts. EXCEPTIONAL WORK BY STAFF Thanks to all our staff at the Wagga RSL and Commercial Club for their fine efforts in making our members and guests visits to our clubs a memorable experience. Many staff go above and beyond their normal duties and develop great relationships and repour with our members. We thank them all for helping make our clubs a great place to visit. Recognition also goes to both Roger Allen and Lil MacAuslan. Roger has worked at the Wagga RSL for thirty years. He has been a valued employee over the years working as a barman, supervisor and most recently cellarman. Lil has reached her tenth anniversary of working at our club. She previously worked at the Wagga RSL and has now reached ten years since returning to the club. Lil is a dedicated member of our staff who works in our bars and gaming areas. Congratulations to Roger and Lil, they are a credit to our clubs and we thank them of their loyalty. KANGAROO MARCH UNVEILING Plaques with the names of the 88 men who left Wagga on the Kangaroo March were unveiled in the Victory Memorial Gardens last month. The plaques were a joint project of the Wagga RSL and Wagga RSL Sub Branch to commemorate the men who sacrificed their lives when they left Wagga 100 years ago. Past President John Keyes initiated the project some time ago. His uncle, Sid Keyes, was one of the men who selflessly took on the March. 'I am honoured to be invited back to unveil the plaques which are something I have dreamt of,' John said. 'They will be there for eternity'. Sid Keyes, along with the other 87 Kangaroo's are featured in the exhibition 'The Kangaroo March: Our Local Boys Walk to War', currently on at the Museum of the Riverina's Historic Council Chamber. The exhibition reveals the stories of the Kangaroo's, their sweethearts, families and friends whose lives were changed irrevocably. The exhibition runs until the 31st of January. DEFEAT THE HEAT Heatwaves are Australia's 'silent killer' with more Australians dying as a result of heatwaves than floods, bushfires or cyclones. Most people know the devasting 2009 Victorian fires killed 173 people - what is less widely known is the heatwave before the fires led to 404 deaths. Clubs Australia and Australian Red Cross have launched a new program to help keep people safe during heatwaves. Wagga RSL Club is one of the three clubs to pilot the program. The Defeat the Heat initiative will give people who are at risk a place to escape the heat and raise community awareness about the dangers of heatwaves. In the event of a heatwave this summer, Wagga RSL Club is a designated cool spot for you to take respite by providing you with shade, airconditioning and activities. If you would like to check whether a heatwave is forecast please visit bom.gov.au/australia/heatwave RSL WOMEN'S BOWLING CLUB Barbara Inglis and Marie Wallace who have both been with the club since its formation in 1980/81. Recently it was with great pleasure that Barbara Inglis was awarded Life Membership to the Wagga RSL Women's Bowling Club. Barbara has been with the club since it's formation in 1980/81. In that time she was secretary for 20 years and is still on the committee at present. What a wonderful achievement, congratulations Barbara. Ladies if you are free on Tuesday and/or Thursday mornings, like to be out in the fresh air, get some exercise and enjoy good company, why not come to play bowls. Wagga RSL Women's Bowling Club would love to welcome new players in A 'come and try' mufti day will be held on Tuesday 19th January at 9am for a 9.30am start. For further information phone the secretary, Carol Parkinson, on DIRECTOR PROFILE Name: Andrew Crakanthorp Occupation: Director Planning & Regulatory Services at Wagga Wagga City Council What do you love to do in your spare time? My wife and I are lucky enough to have three healthy and active teenagers. I get great pleasure from transporting them to and from sport and watching them participate in team events during winter and summer. At other times I really enjoy getting away for one on one time with my wife Fiona. The occasional bush walk and fitness is also part of my spare time. What is your favourite movie of all time? That would be 'The Shawshank Redemption'. The cast was outstanding with Tim Robins and Morgan Freeman, with Morgan being one of my favourite all time actors. A real feel good movie with great acting and a genuine ending. If you could change one thing in this world what would it be? Tough question and hard to put into words however I m really passionate about gender equality and gaining appropriate representation of women across all workforces, having women on various boards and on committees of sporting clubs. I believe that women add new dimensions to discussions, debates and decisions and I am active in this space at the moment. What is your favourite holiday destination? Having grown up in Moruya on the South Coast it is always great to get home with family and spend time catching up with friends and also at Broulee or Moruya beaches. We get down there as often as we can. Our family loves getting up to the Sunshine Coast every couple of years and it looks like Tasmania is our destination in What do you hope to achieve as a Director of our Clubs? As I mentioned earlier, as the opportunity arises I would be keen to improve the representation of women on the board. In addition, I am keen to see the facilities offered by both clubs to be readily available to the community for fundraising events. I would also like to see our clubs emerge as an employer of choice during my tenure on the board. LEISURE COMPANY'S BUSINESS BOWLS COMPETITION Summer is here and there is no better way to spend time having some fun with family, friends or business colleagues than playing barefoot bowls! Join in the Leisure Company Cup on Friday evenings, 6pm to 8pm. Get a team of three together and take part in this great event. Teams can choose to play one game or all four, the choice is up to you.
