FROM THE PRESIDENT The month of November found us literally circling the wagons at the Queen Mine RV Park in Bisbee, Arizona; a tidy little park positioned on a circle of land between the mountain and the mining pit, within walking distance to the historic district. I was happy to see so many new faces at this rally. Of the seventeen rigs in attendance, about half of the people were either new members or second time campers with the club. I think we made a good impression too. First-time hosts, John and Jenice Benton did an outstanding job of booking the venue, coordinating the events and arranging the entertainment. John set the happy hour hors d oeu res ar pretty high with his venison sliders and smoked pheasant with chutney on toast. Of ourse, you a t eat Bis ee s har. The settle e t was founded as a copper, gold, and silver mining town in 1880, and named in honor of Judge DeWitt Bisbee, one of the financial backers of the adjacent Copper Queen Mine. It remained an active mining community until the mid-1970's when the mine closed and a tremendous shift occurred in the local population. As many mining employees and their families left to pursue work elsewhere, an influx of creative free spirits found Bisbee's historic district to be an attractive, inspiring, and inexpensive location to settle and pursue their artistic endeavors. A highlight of the rally was dinner at a Mexican restaurant
followed by a presentation by a local historian who gave a history of the area and spoke a out the Bis ee Deportatio. On July 12, 1917, 1,200 striking miners and their supporters were rounded up at gunpoint by "deputies" of the sheriff, loaded onto railroad boxcars and deported 200 miles into New Mexico without money, food or water and warned against returning to Bisbee. Today though, Bisbee is known as a culturally rich community that includes an active and varied population. Bisbee retains its welcoming spirit, offering visitors a rich mix of art, music, history, architecture, outdoor activities, dining and nightlife. BISBEE PHOTOS BY JOSEPH THOMAS This was my last rally as president of the Arizona Airstream Club and one of the est that I e e er atte ded. I just want to say thank you to all of the Strea ers ho o e to these events, volunteer to host the rallies, or just help-out in some form or fashion. It is you who make Airstreaming fun.

participating in so I can have a proper count for the different venues. This is a big help to any host so if you haven't let me know please make it a point to me. I need to know the following If you plan to join the group for Friday breakfast - we have volunteers who will be providing breakfast near site 41 - no need to give me a count unless you won't be coming over for breakfast. We will shoot for around 8-9 to have time for it to warm up a bit - bring your own coffee and of course plates and silverware Kartchner Caverns For anyone who hasn't ed or called me that you are attending the January at Kartchner Caverns State Park please do so. I would also appreciate it if you would let me know which activities you are Friday tour of the Holy Trinity Monastery including lunch for $10 per person. It is more like dinner - their main meal for the day. We will pass the hat for the tour portion. Saturday breakfast at a nearby restaurant Saturday Dinner at a nearby restaurant
Thank you for helping me to give everyone a proper count. In case the State Park is filled - I checked 11/20 and there were still about a dozen sites for our rally time. There are two RV parks 10 miles south of the Caverns - Quail Ridge and Mountain Ridge that you could call and see if they have any openings. I suggest making your reservations soon for Kartchner. It is only $5 to cancel so better to have them than not Nancy Fisher hicksjandn@aol.com Mantle's Farewell After over 35 years of being members of the Airstream Club we have decided not to renew our membership. During these 35 years we have traveled from Alaska to Florida and Newfoundland to Baja and all points between. I have been Presidents of two Units in two Regions and President of Region Eleven. We have hosted and Attended many Unit, Region Rallies, Special Event Rallies and lead Caravans. These past years have been very Rewarding and fulfilling. We have more Yesterdays then Tomorrows it is time to "Hang em Up" We shall miss our many friends. Thank you again. Don and Clara #217 Charles' Farewell With this newsletter I will be concluding my time as editor of the ARIZONA AIRSTREAM CLUB MONTHLY NEWSLETTER, the "ARIZONA ROUNDUP." It seems only a short time ago I took on the duties, it is amazing how fast 2 years goes by. Dorothy will also be giving up her job as Directory Coordinator which she has performed for many years. I want to thank all our member who have contributed articles and photos to the newsletter and the directory, without your help we would have little to publish. We are fortunate to have a young couple, Stephen & Daniella Hauptmann, taking the
reins of leadership and service to the club. Stephen will be installed as our new President, and Daniella will take on editorship of the newsletter; Past President Jack Frost will take over the Directory. We have sold our Airstream trailer and will not be continuing membership in the club. We do this with heavy hearts as we will miss all the friends we have made and the adventures we have shared with this great club. I look back on our sixteen years with the Airstream Club with fond memories. The many friends we have made both with the Denver Club and the Arizona Club have given us the opportunity to share some wonderful experiences. We have visited almost every state in the union and Canada and Mexico with Airstream Caravans or 's. We had the opportunity to visit locations we would probably never see otherwise, and did it in company of two or more dozen airstream colleagues. How many people can say they have seen wild Polar Bears in Churchill or petted Whales in Baja? I know we have many members that have joined the club with the great intention to get more involved in the "next". The truth is that you really must participate to gain any benefits from the club. Dorothy maintained a log book of our travels over the years and we look back at these trips as some of the most enjoyable times of our life. We put almost 100,000 miles on our 34' trailer and good number of miles on the 25' Airstream we owned before it. As age takes its toll, it is now time to close that log and move on to other adventures. We wish all our friends in the Arizona Airstream Club "Safe Travels and Happy Trails."
