We had twenty (20!) units in attendance, as well as several others who either stayed in the on-site cabins or nearby at their own homes. It sure was a site to see with all those beautiful silver gems lined up in the campground! Although the weather was nearly perfect (cool evenings/ nights and comfortable days), we certainly found out why the nearest town of any size is called Cottonwood! We ll all be blowing those cottony wisps out of our trailers for many months to come! This rally was co-hosted by Bob & Mary Lou Doster and Don & Catherine Noah. The Dosters are old hands at hosting rallies and provided great mentorship for the Noahs. With the great attendance, we were easily able to fill out our volunteer sheets for meal prep, service, and cleanup thanks to all who pitched in! Notable meals included lots of potluck dishes, chicken from KFC, grill-your-own steaks, and a huge vat of sausage gravy over Red Lobster biscuits on Friday morning. I seriously doubt many folks lost weight during this rally! In the local area, we did not lack for entertainment and tourism. We visited the nearby fish hatchery run by the Arizona Department of Fish & Game; very interesting how many trout and other fish species they raise to stock the many waterways of Arizona. As we toured this facility just before lunch, I for one was tempted to snag a few for instant filleting! We had lunch at Up The Creek Bistro right on the banks of Oak Creek. They provided a special menu just for us and, again, no one left hungry. The afternoons were spent either in tours of Sedona, Cottonwood, Clarkdale, or several of the many wineries in the region. We also had several special treats during this rally. First, John Stephenson hosted us at his beautiful house/cabin in the nearby hills and he delivered an outstanding tour with commentary on regional geography and topography. His decades of employment in the Forestry Service made for great Page 1

2 stories. In the evenings, we were treated to several DVD movies in the clubhouse. The first was a documentary of the Page Springs Winery, started by a member of the rock band, Tool. Maynard James Keenan is their vocalist and developed an interest in wine-making and founded this winery just up the road from our campground. The documentary was informative and delightfully spicy! Another video we watched was the nostalgic 50th Anniversary video of the Arizona Airstream Club. The more mature members of the rally saw a lot of old friends and past acquaintances while the rest of us saw what those folks looked like with dark hair! Finally, as an added treat for those in attendance, Denny Kuller pulled out his guitar and basically gave a concert in the clubhouse. He truly is a gifted musician and vocalist and soon the place was SRO with more folks standing outside. Nest House Airstream By: Jack A. Frost This is your roving reporter again. Continuing the theme of Airstreams used for other purposes you may remember my articles about the astronaut quarantine facility onboard the USS Hornet in Alameda, California and the gourmet food pod in Oxford, England. I was in Tobaccoville, North Carolina where I found an old Airstream that s being used as a nest to raise baby chicks. Tobaccoville is a village in the northern Piedmont Region between the coastal plain and the mountains near Winston-Salem. It was named for a plug chewing tobacco factory that was operated here in the 1870 s. The area is a mix of agriculture, industry, tech, downtown, suburbia, arts and education. I landed in this part of the country on the 10th anniversary of my 2,200 mile thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail. I was hoping to commemorate that momentous experience with a 100 mile walk with my friend Rick, trail name Daddy-O, beginning at the southern terminus of the trail in Georgia. I learned of a rather unique use of an Airstream trailer from a young girl who had been walking Rick s goofy ole hound dog while we were gone. Ellis was born in this country and grew-up on the 11,000 foot Tibetan Plateau. After a decade on the Rooftop of the World, her family moved back home and founded NOMAD Farms where they are taking the lessons that they learned from the Tibetan herdsmen and in many ways replicating their livelihood on their own 100 acres of North Carolina grasslands. Livestock and poultry are raised according to ethical animal welfare standards; free-range and organic. Cows eat grass. Chickens peck for bugs and fresh salad. Pigs root and wallow. These creatures are Nomads! At NOMAD Farms, we let animals do what they were designed to do. --Mark Nicholson And its Ellis job to raise and tend-to the chickens. That s where the Airstream comes in. It began its life as a typical 1964 Overlander in Jackson Center, Ohio and was purchased by Charles and Nozelle Rossignol of Thomasville, North Carolina who became members of WBCCI and were issued numbers In 2015, the Nicholson s purchased the trailer and completely gutted it, finding it perfect for temperature control to protect the baby chicks until they are about three weeks old. They call it their NOMAD Nest House and find that it is much more economical than building a stationary structure and much more fitting with their nomad theme since it can be moved as needed. They would love to have a second one if their budget could afford. Now some may say that this is a rather ignominious end to such a proud icon of the American highway. But for a little chick, what better way to begin your life than in a recycled Cadillac of Travel Trailers (considering your ultimate destination)? Page 2

3 2019 Rally Update Hints for RSVP ing to a Rally By: Shelley Randall When you respond to attend a rally, commit to eating a meal at a restaurant, or participating in an activity that requires reservations, please be courteous and keep this commitment or notify the host of the rally as soon as possible if you will not attend. Restaurants hire additional wait staff to better serve a large crowd and lose money when our folks cancel at the last minute and/or just don t show up. Tour guides for planned events are arranged to handle a given number of participants. No shows put a burden on the company in planning for our group. Therefore, the reputation of our Arizona Club is damaged by no shows and businesses will be reluctant to provide a dinner or tour without large monetary deposits. Upon receiving a check for $95 made to Richard Hauptmann, I will let you know your site assignment. You can cancel up to the end of November 2018 and get all your money back except the $5 reservation fee. Shelley is working up a very active program so you don t want to miss this rally! February 21 24: Wickenburg Community Center, Wickenburg, AZ Site includes: power/water & dump station plus use of Community Center for Happy Hour and meals Rally Host: Judy Vergalia (circlevranch1@msn.com) There are 30 sites available at $25.55/night. Site cost will be collected at the rally. Reservations should be made with Judy. We already have 4 reservations. Since there is a lot to do around Wickenburg and it s a great time of year, we will probably fillup. Judy lives in Wickenburg and is already lining up activities. She s hoping we can get a tour of the Vulture Mine and ghost town on that Saturday. Late March/Early April: Looking for a site at 3,000 4,000 feet so we won t be too hot or too cold. Send me suggestions! Hopefully we can come up with something that has a central ramada and maybe power/water June 6 9: Rancho Sedona RV Park, Sedona, AZ Site includes: power/water/sewer. We managed to have 11 sites held for us and 4 are booked, leaving only 7 available. Book directly with the Park, Rancho Sedona RV Park Hurry they wont hold them for us too much longer! Rally July 20-27: National Rally, Doswell, VA October 17-20: Rally & Annual Business Meeting, Site to be determined November 14-17: Trying to line up a spot around Tucson with a group ramada/community house, with power/water. No luck yet. Please suggestions December 14: Holiday Luncheon & Officier Installation Restaurant to be determined Good Airstreaming to everyone. I believe we have quite a few Club Members that will be at National in Salem, OR in June and I look forward to seeing them. Page 3
