ARIZONA ROUNDUP AZ UNIT WBCCI MONTHLY NEWSLETTER OCTOBER 2015 OCTOBER ON THE RIVER October on the River felt like 10 silver fish in a sardine can. 10 Airstream units came to our October rally on the Colorado River and found Havasu Springs Resort to be a multi-level complex with hundreds of RV sites in addition to boat slips and other maritime gear. because it had a room for our annual meeting. Kent and Dorothy Charles, the host for this rally, planned around the extremely limited venue. Gerry and Sandra Pyper, just returning to Arizona from their home in Alberta, CA, assisted in preparing breakfast supreme on Friday, Saturday and Sunday mornings. We gathered to share food and conversation each morning and then we were free to explore the Lake Havasu area. The site was selected because of its proximity to Lake Havasu and We have lived in Arizona since 1961 and have driven through the area, but never spent extended time. Mary Lou and I

explored 4 different state parks, viewed the Bill Williams River Wildlife preserve. Having free time to see and do what each person was interested in was how Kent and Dorothy dealt with the venue limitations. We gathered again at 4 PM for Happy Hour and shared what each had seen during the day and got acquainted with our first time rally attendees; Tee and Beth Taylor and George and Melanie Clark. On Saturday along with their girls Malia and Paris. We were able to check out Tee a d Beth s restoratio of their 1978 Caravanner and George a d Mela ie s eautifully decorated 2014 Flying Cloud. Jack Frost, who recently showed and received 1st place junior class at the International rally, also had his rig open for inspection. As I reflect on this rally, October on the River or newly named Silver fish in a Sardine Can, I feel that for this venue Kent and Dorothy with help from Gerry and Sandra delivered a perfect rally. Thank you. morning we were happy to see Stephen and Daniella Hauptman The membership report at our annual meeting was a very positive on in that we have many new members. We welcome all of you. I hope each of you will be able to join us at one of our upcoming events. We will be at Kartchner Caverns State Park

November and our annual holiday luncheon will be De e er th at Serra o s i Chandler. I especially want to welcome our new members from France and Belgium, you truly help to make WBCCI an international club. I hope our Arizona residents will get acquainted and pass on pictures and notes about our activities. A reminder to all that November 15th is the cutoff date for renewing your membership if you want to be listed in the Blue Beret publication, but December 31 is the date to renew for the 2016 year. I encourage all to renew and we want to see you at the next events. 5 Kent Charles, Acting Recording Secretary VACATIONING AMONG the PINES - PONDEROSA PINES THAT IS By Ed and Joan Feddern #5928 It may not be the most glamorous way to spend a few weeks vacationing throughout our beautiful United States that is in a travel trailer, but camping in an Airstream trailer puts camping into a class all by itself. As time continues on, the older Airstream trailers become even more desirable and popular for many reasons. Even those who can afford vacationing any way they choose and anywhere they desire are now acquiring and refitting Vintage Airstream trailers of any size trying to outdo so eo e else s le er and skillful interior designs. The cost is not an issue! They show their trailers wherever they can and even form large Vintage parades at the Airstream Rallies and Conventions. In the past 20 years Airstreams have become very popular in Europe and Japan besides in our country. Pulling an aeronautical aluminum design trailer is quite an attraction and has been ever since Wally Byam began his business of manufacturing Airstream trailers during the early 1930s. He chose the name Airstream because they pull behind a vehicle like" a stream of air. It was in 1932 that Wally Byam went into full-time production in Los Angeles with the first Airstream trailers being named the Torpedoes a d soo, or so ere gra i g A eri a s roadways. In 1934 the Silver Bullet was built and in 1936 it was the Silver Cloud. To say the least, these Vintage trailers are u h desired i todays orld of travel. We have visited the current Airstream factory in Jackson Center, Ohio, and every year newer and better designs for more ease of living and comfort in camping are individually built into each Airstream giving it the

reputation of being the BEST BUILT of all towable trailers in the world today. Currently the factory is doubling its size as the Airstreams continue to increase in popularity. Wally Byam was born in 1896 in Baker City, Oregon, on the 4th of July. His birthday continues to be celebrated on that special holiday at the International Rallies that are organized at a different city each year. We have attended many of these International Rallies and anywhere from 2,000 to 4,000 Airstreams continue to find their way for this special week over the th of July. Wally Bya s early life was anything but normal, but he held to these beliefs he learned as a young boy. These are hand written in his journal -. Do t li e i the past or the future ake history! 2. Get enjoyment out of the little things! 3. Cultivate will power! These were important truths which he held on to which helped make him the exceptional man that he became. In the 1930s he put together large caravans through Mexico and South America as well as Europe and Asia. He encourage people to go on these caravans saying: "With no worry as to where you are going to stay, or how the means are going to be when you get there... you have plenty of carefree time to see the sights instead of hurrying through them!" Today we cherish the photos of these faraway places in the beautiful Coffee Table book that we purchased and also in the collectible post cards. We accidently learned about Airstream trailers in 1979 when friends of ours acquired a used Airstrea that eeded to find a permanent home. Being young and without much money, we offered to buy this huge alu i u hate er a d try to put it to good use. Ed and I soon learned a great deal about fixing up old trailers to look and feel like home, and through the years, and with Ed being the chief of all handy men In every respect, we came to own 4 used Airstreams and one new Airstream of which we still

enjoy. We would spend time and labor but very little money on these used trailers so when it came time to sell in order to buy a different Airstream, we lost very little money, We started with a 26 ' trailer, then a 23', later a follo ed y a a d then in 2001 treated ourselves to our eautiful NEW Airstream which is now 14 yrs. old and still looks like new. Our family enjoyed this way of vacationing that continued well after the kids left home. By becoming a part of the WBCCI, Wally Byam Caravan Club International, we traveled to many cities and states throughout our country learning first-hand what a marvelous country we indeed are privileged to live in. When our kids left home, the empty nest was replaced by being active in the WBCCI. We took part in three (3) month-lo g ara a s, a d I so happy to have kept scrap books on all our caravan trips knowing that in time our memories are only good to a point. The Arizona Unit has been instrumental in covering the large state with rallies of all kinds. We never would have learned so much about our state and other states if it ere t due to ei g a ti e with other Airstreamers. Being that we no longer live in our home of 54 years where we had space for the trailer, we now leave our Airstream in a private Airstream Park in Show Low, Az. This is a wonderful park where 40 Airstream owners own 1/4 acre with a screened-in casita and a sizeable storage shed. A large recreation bldg. serves many of our recreational needs and we feel blessed to know our trailer is safe and waiting for us to enjoy come the summer months. The beautiful Ponderosa Pines surround us and give us the smell and enjoyment that words cannot describe. The White Mts. of Ariz. has the largest Ponderosa Pine Forest in the world where the showers come often but then the sun shines through the pines to give off the warmth of summer. At this stage in life Ed 83 and myself 81, we no longer feel comfortable trailering our Airstream, therefore Ponderosa Airstream Park fulfills our needs for a summer get-a-

way as it does for so many others in the park. We are truly blessed for the many memories and still many memories to come. Each lot in the park has guest RV parking with full hookups, so ya all come, ya hear!!! The offee s ready! Here s the address of our Airstream Private Park 5900 Show Low Lake Road, Lakeside, Arizo a. We re here to show you all around, and you can spend time on one of our lots to check us out. By Ed and Joan Feddern # E. Mayo Blvd. #42l04 Phoenix, Az work in, and now we can begin the great camping adventure. It would be nice to meet you someday. Our airstream will probably never be able to join us to the US, because transportation is around $ 6,000. Very best regards Johan and Carine Hello Bob, I enclose a few pictures of us, and of the airstream. There's also a picture of our airstream and our friends with their airstream. They are now also a member of the WBCCI. Regards, Johan and Carine NEW EUROPEAN MEMBERS CORRESPONDENCE WITH THE PRESIDENT Hello Bob, We are very pleased to be among the big WBCCI, Carine and I tow a 31 foot 1976 sovereign. We will have space for 145 persons and we hope to have a full house. There is parking on the street and behind the restaurant. The time is 12:00 noon to 3 PM on December 5, at Serrano's located at 141 S Arizona Avenue, Chandler. We are committed for one hundred so we want our members to make plans now to attend. The cost will be approximately twenty six dollars which will cover room, tax and gratuity for a four entrée buffet. Members should me at wdoster@cox.net, or call at or send a note to my office at W Arrow Dr., Buckeye, Arizona FROM THE PRESIDENT ELECT The January Rally, January 14 to 17, 2016, will be a Buddy Rally. That means you may invite a friend who pulls Some Other Brand (SOB) rather than Airstream. It will be located at the Yuma County Fairgrounds, Yuma, AZ, and co-hosted by Gerry and Sandra Pyper and Jack Frost. The February Rally, February 11 to 14, will be at Catalina State

Park, near Tucson. It will be cohosted by Larry Palmer, Samantha Betrus, Jim Hicks, and Nancy Fisher. The March Rally, March 10 to 13, will be at Distant Drums RV Resort, Camp Verde, AZ. I am looking for a host or set of cohosts for this rally. Please me, if you are able to host this rally. Shelley and I are looking forward to seeing everyone at Kartchner Caverns. Jim Moser, VP AZ Unit pjamesmoser@gmail.com FUTURE RALLY INFORMATION Our November rally is at Kartchner Caverns State Park. The Wright's are co-hosting with Mary Lou and me. They live nearby and will have some interesting ideas for other things to do while in the area. Some may think that having already been to the caverns there will be nothing new and that would be a mistake for you could be missing the best rally of the year. Please contact me at wdoster@cox.net to reserve one of the RV sites that we have reserved early so that we can park together. You will pay the Arizona Unit as these spaces are already paid. YUMA Some information on the YUMA BUDDY RALLY We have booked a Dinner Cruise on the River Boat for Jan 16th 3 pm - 6 pm if we have 25+ sign up before Jan 3rd we will have the boat for our clubs exclusive use and we would also have a choice on the buffet. We need a commitment on this if we would like exclusive use of the boat, otherwise we will be sharing the boat with others. The price for the Dinner Cruise will be $70.00 or $67.00 if we have more than 20 in our group. This can be paid by each person attending so we don't have to collect money. Jack has arranged for an interesting tour of the Window Plant here in Yuma. Unfortunately the tour is limited to 20 people on a first come basis. If anyone wishes to be on the tour then they should register early.

Over the 4 days we will provide breakfast Friday, Saturday and Sunday and Chili Dinner on Friday Night. We will advise of planned activities and suggested attractions worth visiting as we get closer to the Rally Date. We should invite other units and friends to this BUDDY RALLY. We can handle up to 30 units.
