On Friday morning, Ken and Sun, assisted by Gerry and Sandra Pyper, provided a hearty breakfast enjoyed by all. Photo by Jim Moser During the day on both Friday and Saturday, various, Airstreamers visited many sites of Cochise County. Ten of us visited Gammons Gulch, an oldwest movie set and museum, where there was a movie being produced. Others visited the military museum in Fort the OK corral, Bisbee mining and historical museum, Coronado National Memorial, and a variety of canyons, vistas 1

AZ Club Vests We ordered extra vests as part of our last order for the beige Arizona Airstream Unit Vests. They range in price from $22 to $26, depending on size. They seem to run a bit small, so, for example, if you normally wear a medium, then you would be comfortable in a large vest. If interested, see me at the Holiday Luncheon.

4 Welcome New Members Steve and Lisa Parr, Gilbert, AZ, Welcome to the Arizona Airstream Club. We look forward to meeting you at future events! My grandkids My grandkids text me plz because it is shorter than please. I text back no because it is shorter than yes. Tennessee A trooper pulled over a pickup truck on I-75, and asked the driver, You have any ID? The driver replied, Bout what? See you down the road, Jim A VISIT TO FAIRBANKS by Bob Doster Fairbanks is located on AZ 82 between US 80 and AZ 90 along the banks of the San Pedro River. It is now designated as a ghost town and a riparian area. Frey Marcos de Niza explored the area in 1535 followed by 4 Father Kino in In 1854 the Gadsden Purchase was ratified and the area became part of the US. The New Mexico and Arizona Railroad opened a depot in 1882 to provide service for nearby Tombstone. Tombstone was, at this time, a city of 12,000 residents and the second largest city in the west. A town site was established around the new depot with the usual businesses. One such business was a mercantile in which Barry Goldwater s Uncle Joe had a store. This building is still standing. A one room school house and a teacher s house were built along with numerous private homes. An underlying issue was the Boquillas Land and Cattle Company which was owned by George Hearst who had acquired ownership after the Gadsden Purchase. This ownership had been contested for years and was finally ratified in 1906 voiding all other claims. Some residences were burned or torn down, but others began to lease their property from the Hearst

5 heirs. In 1910 the census was 242. In 1942 an increase in population occurred when the highway was being widened, but time catches up when school consolidation occurs. The highway widening takes the hotel and when railroad service ends the mercantile closes. Mercantile and post office by Bob Doster In 1988 the area is designated the San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area. In 2001 the school house is restored and is opened as a visitor center. Numerous hikes originate from School house and teacher's house by Bob Doster 5 the location. If you decide to visit this area be sure to pick up the Arizona Geological survey, Down to Earth Series 6, to learn what was happening in the San Pedro River Valley 12,000 years ago. This publication is available in the school house gift shop. Be careful if you go hiking and be sure to carry plenty of water and a stick as this area is home to many snakes. Dancer, the rattlesnake resides under the school house and there are many postings along the trail to the old Silver Mill. SHRIMP & SPINACH DIP by Judy Vergalla 1-8 ounce package of cream cheese, cut into quarters 8 ounces of cooked salad shrimp, defrosted 1 small package of frozen chopped spinach, thawed and drained 1 cup of shredded Parmesan cheese 1 large shallot, finely chopped 4 Tablespoons butter 1 teaspoon garlic powder 1 teaspoon lemon juice

6 Preheat oven to 350 In a large skillet, heat the butter at medium high heat, and toss in that shrimp, spinach, shallot and garlic. Stir gently and consistently until the shallot has become translucent. The ingredients should be heated through, about five minutes. Add lemon juice. Pull off of the heat, and add one half of the Parmesan cheese and the cream cheese. Mix well. Place the entire mixture into an 8 x 8 baking dish. Sprinkle evenly with the remaining Parmesan cheese, and bake uncovered for 15 to 20 minutes until heated through and slightly browned on top. Serve warm with crackers (I used harvest stone toasted sesame brown rice and chickpea crackers) The Copper Queen Mine article and photos by Kent Charles with Historical information from Wikipedia 6 The Copper Queen Mine in Bisbee AZ was started in the 1880s. Its orebody ran 23% copper, an extraordinarily high grade. In the early 1900s, this was the most productive copper mine in Arizona. While copper mining declined in the area in the 1930s and 1940s, the Copper Queen continued to be mined by the open-pit method until it closed in The underground mining work was extremely hazardous. The Phelps Dodge mine operators routinely demanded unpaid work, subjected miners to physical strip searches, and followed dangerous practices like blasting while miners were in the mine and not permitting safety operators on drills and elevators. There were also widespread claims of discrimination against non-white miners. A miners union organized in 1917, when the mine was the site of an Industrial Workers of the World miners' strike. Phelps Dodge resisted union organizing and illegally used private police to arrest

7 more than 1300 miners. They put them on railroad cars and expelled them from the town and area in what became known as the Bisbee Deportation. In the 1950s, Phelps Dodge developed open-pit mining at the Copper Queen; this enabled mining operations to continue. Underground work was also done. By the middle 1960s, the grade of ore from the Copper Queen had declined to 4%. The underground mine ceased production in As proposed by the mayor and volunteers seeking an alternative economic base, the company agreed to allow part of the mine to be open for tours. This area was renovated by paid and volunteer workers to create a heritage tourism site. More than one million visitors have seen the mine since it reopened in Phelps Dodge's former headquarters building in Bisbee has been adapted as a mining museum, which offers interpretation of the mining era and its effects in the region. 7 The tour starts out with an issue of hard hat, miner s headlamp and a yellow safety vest followed by an introduction by our guide, a former miner. He entertained us with stories of life in the mine and life in Bisbee during the mining era. I should mention that we also had to sign our lives away in the form of a waiver that relived the owner of all liability in the event of our injury during the tour. As part of a group of about thirty we boarded the mine shuttle train

8 Mined cavern and were driven into the bore thru the large metal door guarding the entrance. We were allowed to get off the train in several locations to view mined caverns and rock chutes as well as shafts and elevators. Several displays demonstrated mining technology from hand drills to air drills. The guide talked about the hazards of mining and dust that resulted in a high death rate from Silicosis among early miners. Thousands of Bisbee visitors descend into the Queen Mine Tour each year heading underground and back in time. Tour guides, retired Phelps Dodge employees, lead the group 1,500 feet into the mine 8

9 and recount mining days, techniques, dangers and drama. Shack. The train was met by an Ambulance and emergency workers indicating an onboard problem that partially explained the 4-hour delay in scheduled arrival. I think Barbara has lots of fun things planned and AZ unit members are welcome to attend. There are some speakers planned and I think it is Thursday that there is a free day and plans in the works for carpooling to the Olive Mill and many other options of things to do. Some of the attendees will be in this area for the first time and a hop down to Tucson or up to the Phoenix area 10 if they have never been before will be fun for them and there are things to keep the AZ unit busy I'm sure. I know that Barbara will have plenty of things going on and will need help so volunteering is another possibility to fill the days. Many are coming in on Sunday so AZ Unit members may want to get settled in then as well or Monday is no problem either.
