ARIZONA ROUNDUP AZ UNIT WBCCI MONTHLY NEWSLETTER MARCH 2016 FROM THE PRESIDENT S DESK: Camp Verde Rally Our hosts, Rod and Joann Gamble, kicked off the rally with an afternoon English tea, featuring hot tea, and freshly baked English scones with clotted cream and a variety of jams. Yum, yum! Later, we shared happy-hour and a potluck dinner. Our venue, Distant Drums RV Park is one of the best-maintained RV parks anywhere.
Friday morning began with a delicious hot breakfast, served by our famous breakfast chefs, bear. We watched a show in which a tiger was induced to Jerry and Sandra Pyper. Then we spent much of the day at the Out of Africa Wildlife Park. Lions, and tigers, and bears! Oh, my! The park contains a huge jump into a pool in pursuit of inflatable toys, and in another show we were introduced to collection of wild critters who roam in out-door enclosures. Some of us fed celery to a giraffe up real close, and we watched our tour-guide offer meat snacks to hyenas, lions, tigers, and a very exotic unusual animals from various parts of the tropics.
For dinner, the Gambles prepared traditional South African Bobotie - a beef curry casserole (beef curry topped with a creamy egg custard) served over white rice and topped with desiccated coconut. Side dishes included a piquant tomato and onion salad, sliced where Alice provided a delicious brunch of breakfast casserole, fruit, and assorted pastries. The bananas, and chutney. What a wonderful combination of flavors! Even Shelley, who usually turns up her nose at curry, thought the whole thing was delicious. Later that evening, we enjoyed a trivia game in which teams of four persons competed for prizes. On Saturday morning, we enjoyed a visit to the home of John and Alice Stephenson, Stephensons live on a beautiful site next to US National Forest land. Several Airstreamers enjoyed hikes through the countryside, easily accessible from Stephenson s home. We
hiked past ancient ruins of an Indian settlement, walked along Spring Creek in a lush valley breakfast provided by Ken and Sun Bauman. We said our goodbyes and prepared for our departure. I wish to thank Bob Edwards for preparing the coffee and hot tea water each morning, Jerry and Sandra Pyper as well as Ken and Sun Bauman for preparing breakfasts, and especially the Stephensons for brunch at their home and the Gambles for the planning and hosting the rally. A good time was enjoyed by all. featuring Cottonwoods, Sycamores, and wild flowers, and trekked on a high desert path. Later, back at the RV park, we grilled meat and shared a potluck supper. Sunday morning, we were treated to a delicious continental Upcoming Rallies My wife, Shelley, and I will host the April rally at Lost Dutchman State Park (near Apache Junction) April 7 to 10, In addition to beautiful photo opportunities and hiking trails in and near the park, we plan to offer an afternoon Nature Cruise on Canyon Lake and an evening Dinner and Show at the Arizona Opry. Later in April, the unit will celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Route 66. Barbara Vaughn and
Mary Lou Doster have organized a caravan along a portion of this fa ous old high ay. Do t miss details of this exciting event elsewhere in this newsletter Also, at Camp Verde we enjoyed the company of new affiliate members Dwight and Lana Olson New Members Peter and Dawn Malleo, from (primary unit Nebraska) and Tucson and New Jersey, joined us at Camp Verde for their first Airstream Rally. Peter shared delicious fresh fried bread. Thank you, Peter. Patricia Schwarzlose of Lake Havasu City has renewed her unit membership, and Kathleen Jamsa of Tucson has joined our unit. Welcome, and we hope to see you down the road.
Mike and Monique Labossiere (primary unit Alberta Saskatchewan). Welcome. Special Guests Richard Girard, future WBCCI International President, and his wife Jan joined us for dinner on Friday evening. Also, Jerry Larson, past WBCCI International President, and his wife Joan visited us for the day on Friday. A Telephone Conversation Good or i g. Sheriff s Deputy Jones speaking. And the best of the day to yourself. This is Father O Malley of St. A s. There s a jackass lying dead in me front lawn, and would ye be so kind as to send a couple of yer lads to take care of the matter. Well now Father, it was always my impression that you people took care of the last rites. After a lo g o e t of sile ce Father O Malley replied: Aye, tis certainly true; but we are obliged to notify the next of kin first, which is the reason for me call. Please consider sharing your travels with us as the club reduces our activities during the heat of the summer. Send you stories and photos to me at kdcharles@q.com As many of you know, Past President and Former First Lady Bob and May Doster have a son in the Navy. Captain William Doster is currently the Commanding Officer of Naval Air Facility El Centro. Bill is a uniquely qualified Naval Officer holding both Gold Dolphins for Submarine Service and Wings of Gold as a Naval Aviator. He completed five strategic deterrent submarine patrols including the first Ohio class strategic deterrent patrol to the Mediterranean Sea before transitioning to naval aviation. He is a combat veteran having flown sorties in the opening weeks of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM. I share this info with you because Bill was the host to a number of AZ Unit members that were invited to attend practice sessio s of the Na y s Aerial Demonstration Team The Blue Angles. The team has their winter home at El Centro where they practice twice a day during the weeks leading up to their annual show schedule. Several Airstreamers were permitted to enter the Naval Air Facility to observe close up the hard work and dedication of the Blue Angles team training for their arduous public show
schedule. The practice sessions were held twice a day for several days and included at least one emergency landing after one of the aircraft struck a bird. You cannot help but get a proud feeling when you meet such skilled and dedicated members of our armed forces.
iairstreamers with Blue Angles US Navy Photo CAPT Doster with Bob and Mary It was also a pleasure to travel on to Death Valley National Park
along with the Dosters after our visit to El Centro. The news wires were hot with reports of the wildflower bloom in progress after heavy rains last October. We took our trailer to Stovepipe Wells which was a central location within the Park. The reports of the widespread flower bloom were accurate. Dorothy lived and work in Death Valley for more than 10 years and never saw such an extensive show of color throughout the valley.
