sis ALABAMA UNIT #001 WBCCI NEWSLETTER September 2017 President s Message Hello Alabama Unit Attendees enjoyed a wonderful gathering at Mystic Springs Cove with the Region 6, Pensacola Unit 29. The host unit went out of their way to make us all feel welcome. They arranged for a cookout on Thursday as people were arriving. Perhaps there is a lesson to takeaway for some of our future activities. I will not recap all the activities, but they were all fun and everyone was well fed. Mike Hamilton called a meeting of all Alabama Unit members present to discuss the slate of Officers for the next year. The slate was agreed to by a voice vote, then we got right down to business with discussions of activities for the upcoming year. It looks like there will be lots of opportunities for everyone in our Unit to participate. Activities will occur in all parts of Alabama and three surrounding states. More on the activities, later. The main reason for this joint rally, was to allow for the Region 6 President, Ken Ritenour to install new officers for both units. The new slate for the Alabama Unit is: President 1st VP 2nd VP 3rd VP Corr. Secretary Rec. Secretary Treasurer(1/18) Treasurer(12/17) Membership Newsletter North AL Social Russ Pry Jerry Mitchell Mike Loggins Tony Olm PJ Pry Michael Hamilton Paul Pasley John Rylee John Rylee Andrea Patterson Central AL Social John Burton South AL Social Web Master Flip Aehnlich Ron Akridge We still need a recording secretary.
Andrea, John and Flip arrange our dinners and luncheons for designated areas of the state. Ron has worked on our present website ( and offered to continue in that role. I felt they should be recognized in our submission of the official New Officer Reporting Form. Russ Pry being installed as President by Ken Ritenour, Region 6 President During our meeting, we discussed plans for future Unit activities. Our goal is to visit the Airstream Parks in surrounding states to support their parks and provide maximum opportunities for our members to participate. We know we have members that like to caravan, so we are aiming to plan a couple Unit sponsored caravans. The Region Rally should already be on your schedule for October We will try to flesh out some of the plans for events below at that Rally. Newly installed Alabama Unit Officers with (l to r) Region 6 President, Ken Ritenour, Russ Pry, Jerry Mitchell, Mike Loggins, Tony Olm, P.J. Pry, & Mike Hamilton PJ and I are working on the schedule for the Veteran s Day Rally at Joe Wheeler State Park scheduled for November 9-12, The meeting room is reserved. Reservations can be made for specific sites at There are activities that we will try to coordinate and publish soon.
We, like most in North Alabama, winterize our Airstream from December to February, and we will have many holiday activities and guests. However, if you are looking for a camping trip, Mike Hamilton recommends the Fantasy In Lights of Callaway Gardens, US Hwy 27, Pine Mountain, GA Friday, November 17, 2017 to Saturday, January 6, I don t think there will be a Unit activity, but that can change if you let us know there is a lot of interest. Perhaps early in December would work. Mystic Springs Cove Rally will be February Last February this was a Mardi Gras themed rally held by the Pensacola Unit, but this year s theme will be The Mystic Jester s Ball. We plan to attend and then PJ and I will extend our time in the South to enjoy the beach. Perhaps other Unit members will be interested in making reservation at Fort Pickens, Pensacola Beach, FL starting on February 19, so the good times continue for a few more days. Jerry Mitchell mentioned the Corps of Engineers Caravan that was previously conducted by Julia and Paul Pasley. This would be a perfect fit for the March time frame. This caravan would hit a few COE campgrounds on the western side of Alabama. John and Carol Rylee have reserved Anchors Aweigh RV Resort for April to be our official State Rally. More to come on the itinerary in a future newsletter. We plan to invite surrounding Units. Mike and Cathi Hamilton want to plan a Unit Caravan to Top of Georgia Airstream Park. Turns out John Burton was already working on a plan for a rally there. Perhaps they can put their heads together to coordinate with the Unit and select locations for a caravan to meet up on the way there and terminate on the way home. This would likely occur in May. The WBCCI 2018 International Rally Salem, OR is June 17 30, at the Oregon State Fairgrounds. Some from our Unit will attend this Rally. PJ and I will be there, so we hope many of you join us. This may be an appropriate time for those who don t want to travel the entire way to Oregon to hold a Rally at Tennessee Cumberland Plateau Campground, near Crossville, TN. We will need
someone who is not travelling to Oregon to plan for this Rally. Any volunteers? We have contact information. July August are hard months to plan Unit activities due to summer travel plans and the many caravan opportunities. PJ and I will be on the North to Alaska Caravan. In September, we will hold another Rally to install new officers. Perhaps we can do this jointly with a Tennessee Unit or the Pensacola Unit. Anyone who would like to fill one of the positions listed above should let us know. Fresh ideas are always welcome. Throughout the year there are luncheons or dinners in North Alabama (Huntsville Athens Decatur), in Central Alabama (Birmingham) and South Alabama (Montgomery). We have two Unit caravans in the early planning stages. We have Rallies planned to support our neighboring Units in Florida, Georgia and Tennessee. We have some of our own Unit Rallies in the planning stage. We plan to invite the surrounding Units to join us at our rallies. There are lots of opportunities for participation by all members. There will be a function near where you live. We look forward to seeing each of the Unit members at one or more events. PJ and I are very enthusiastic about leading this Unit for the next year. We hope this enthusiasm is contagious. Join us at Unit activities. New Members We welcome the following new members to the Alabama Unit: Janna and Allen Summerall-Smith 3719 Sandfort Rd Phenix City, AL janna_summerall@yahoo.com lasuga56@yahoo.com Area Meetings Montgomery Area The September dinner meeting was cancelled due to the arrival of hurricane Irma. The next meet-
ing will be Monday, October 9, time and place TBA. Birmingham Area The Birmingham Area Dinner for September was also cancelled due to Irma. The next meeting is planned for Oct 9, time and place TBA. Let John Burton know if you can attend, , North Alabama Area Submitted by Andrea Patterson The North Alabama Lunch Bunch met at Clark s restaurant in Athens for the August meeting. We had our own dining room and enjoyed discussing past and future travel stories. Eleven attended. Russ Pry will lead the September and October lunch schedules while the Pattersons are on the American Revolution - Southern Campaign caravan. Submitted by Russ Pry There were 5 attendees at the North Alabama Airstream Luncheon at the Rail Yard in Decatur for September. Russ Pry & PJ Pry, Ron & Leslie Akridge, and Gerald Carruthers attended. Topics included the new Rocket City RV Airstream dealer and service center just north of Decatur Hwy 20. Ron mentioned his jet ski trip and recent surgery. Jerry asked about our Appalachian Trail adventures. We discussed adding rear view cameras to an older Airstream trailer and where to obtain them. The October luncheon will be at the City Cafe Diner, 2003 Drake Ave SW, Huntsville, AL on Oct 25.
