1 March/April 2014 Volume 51, Issue 2 SMOKE SIGNALS The Official Publication of the ANKOKAS Region AACA HIGH BEAMS Well, I think spring is finally here. It s about time. There is a lot of stuff coming up. Hope you will participate. Let s get started. After the Haddonfield show, I sent a letter to all registrants thanking them for attending, and included a membership application. The results? We have 21 new members. In This Month s Issue: ANKO, KAS Car Club High Beams 1 Meeting Minutes 2 South East of Laramie 3 For Sale/Wanted 4 Talking about new members, Greg Love got married on Saturday, April 5 th at Clark s Landing Marina in Marina in Delran. Greg wanted a small display of cars to greet his guests, and we were able to satisfy his request. Those that participated were Bob Petters and his 40 Oldsmobile, Bernie Schuster brought his 70 Eldorado, Bill Balkie and his 57 Eldorado, Larry Brandolf with his 41 Buick. I took my 2004 Cadillac XLR, Ed Mayberry brought his bright yellow and black 70 Challenger. Jeff Schulte and his 47 Buick, and not to be outdone the groom s father Steve (also an Ankokas member) brought his 30 Ford Tudor. A good time was had by all. Moving right along, Carol & Tom Amendola have kindly consented to host our Charter Luncheon again this year on Sunday, May 18 th. Those of you who attended last year will remember an incredible event in a spacious beautiful home and the Ankokas car show in the back yard. Of course we can t overlook Tom s radio and TV collection and his eclectic car collection. This year the model trains were running. In short there was and is something for everyone. More on the charter luncheon later. Shows and cruises this year? May 12 th Marketplace Cruise June 7 th Marketplace Cruise July 14 th - Marketplace Cruise August 11 th - Marketplace Cruise September 20 th Haddonfield Car Show Finally, at our meeting this month, Thursday April 17 th, we will have the judges from the Superior Court Family, Criminal, Civil, General Equity, along with the Supervising Judge of all municipal courts in Camden County, as well as the Chief Judge (otherwise known as the Assignment Judge). They will tell us about the cases they try and there will be a question and answer period. Don t miss this one. Get the metal ready for the road. This year s fun is about to start to begin. My wishes to all for a Happy Easter and Happy Passover. Allan
2 SMOKE SIGNALS Page 2 ANKOKAS MINUTES OF GENERAL MEETING 2/20/14 Meeting called to order by VP Villone in the absence of Pres Vogelson Treasurer s report: Jeff Schulte reported a balance at this time of $16, Membership: 88 members as of last report from membership chair Gundersen Smoke Signals: Mike not in attendance. No report from editor but a request for articles and information for the newsletter Sunshine: Old Business: Joyce Wickel recently had surgery but is home doing fine. Tony Mancuso is recovering well and doing fine Carl Villone and Jim Wickel assisted at AACA recently at the Philadelphia Auto Show by manning an information table. The annual AACA business meeting and seminars was held last week in Philadelphia and was attended by many of our members. New Business: New A/C auction event is coming up for next week and Ankokas members are not asked to help this year. There was no program The Show Finder annual club meeting is set for Sunday, March 9 th. Several Ankokas members will attend representing our club. At our last meeting a guest, Mark Stanley, requested Ankokas help them put on a car show as a fundraiser for Seneca High School s Robotic club. The group consists of students from Cherokee, Lenape, Shawnee & Senaca High schools and each year they create some kind of a robot for science experiments and contests. It encourages future engineers. The schools do not help much with finances and they are looking for a way to earn some money for their projects. This was discussed at length and the membership voted and approved that we will not host the show for them but would assist with information and maybe attendance for the show day. Bob Petters will contact Rich Howey (his guest) for more information and then notify them of our decision. A financial contribution was discussed and will be determined later if we do contribute and how much. A report back to the club will follow. No date has been set yet for our annual Charter Luncheon. Meeting was adjourned and refreshments made available. Submitted by Bob Petters
3 SMOKE SIGNALS Page 3 Somewhere South-East of Laramie.. By Myron Smith VP-Youth Development, AACA National My son Nathan & I enjoy junk yards, I have enjoyed them since I was a child. One of my memories is riding out a rainstorm in a peach colored 58 Impala coupe that in the condition it was then would be considered an easy restoration. Nathan, while wanting to do perfect work particularly enjoys the imperfect. The fresh out of the pasture cars that have been mechanically rebuilt but left cosmetically the way they found it we find particularly of interest. Vintage cars & trucks are interesting no matter what the condition. Antique cars are to be enjoyed no matter what the condition, and no matter what the age of the owner. Some articles cannot be improved on. This one came to me, not from near Laramie WY but from Laramie. I could not express thoughts better than Ted Preston has in the following so I offer here his thoughts in its entirety.. How can I get this restoration project moving? It s winter time, when some of us have free time evenings and weekends to work on those project cars hiding in our garages. I ve had one of those in my garage, too. I d like to say that I ve been working on it for the past six years. In truth I worked on it for about six months, then it sat for almost six years, mostly disassembled, and largely in the way. It seems I needed some motivation to complete the project. I remembered loving how the car drove when I first bought it. I liked it so much that I wanted to build it into a practical, classic daily driver. Seeking motivation, I decided I should reassemble the car enough to drive again, and that might motivate me to get it finished. Mission accomplished! I put the car back on the road a couple months ago, installed a drivers seat in the otherwise stripped interior, drove it a thousand miles or so, and shook out some drivability bugs. I liked driving the car just as much as I had six years ago, and I was, in fact re-motivated to get it finished. When I left off with restoration progress all those years back, I left the car with fresh paint on the hood and front fenders, and the rest in primer. I found myself wanting to spray paint and finish the bodywork... in November in Wyoming. It worked out better than I had hoped, thanks in part to some unseasonably warm weather. I found that you can easily sand, mask and spray a single panel at a time in the evening after work. It produces a marvelously motivating feeling when you watch the paint job proceed in that fashion, and the car looks a little better every day! I also learned that my amateur painting skills produce a much better finish this way than when I try to paint a whole car at once. Spraying a single panel gave me far more time and concentration to control the paint film, and my home air compressor was able to keep up just fine. It always struggled to keep up when I sprayed a whole car at once, even a small car. My paint job is complete now, and I found the motivation I need to finish this project. A new interior upholstery kit is on order, and I look forward to seeing the car finished by spring. I hope some of the rest of the High Wheelers and Oak Spokes can find their own inspiration to make progress on their projects during these long winter evenings. I m planning, as the new President of the High Wheelers, to implement a regular monthly garage night, and encourage the members to gather for wrenching and socializing in the environment I enjoy so much: the garage on a long winter evening!
4 SMOKE SIGNALS Page 4 Don t ever feel embarrassed to drive your project car. Getting it out on the street again may remind you why you started that project in the first place! Should we hold a joint project car show in the spring, where we can all show off our progress? It may also be a way to reach out to the next generation of restorers, whose rides aren t quite up to normal show standards. Happy wrenching! Ted Preston President, Hi Wheelers Chapter Thank you Ted, Myron Smith VP Youth Development. For Sale/Wanted 1930 Ford Model A cpe., 12V, hydraulic brakes, runs good, never restored, $9,000 or BO.
