2 Letter from President Hubert Sawyers III Question of the month: what is a neighborhood without its children? As a young(er) resident with no kids, I have experienced slight discomfort when kids are present. There is something to a smaller being buzzing around to humble a man my size. Either I scare a child or I m afraid I might hurt him or her, like the Of Mice and Men character, Lenny with the rabbit. I have since gotten used to having little kids in my midst. In fact, I quite like being around them. Many are still afraid of me and I m still awkward when trying to play with a toddler, but I now actually enjoy the experience. Through this change, my empathy for my neighborhood parents has heightened. When we first moved here, there was only one child between the four couples in our original potluck group. Now we have many more in our young family collective, even one from our original core group. When I meet with my young(er) neighbors, it is not uncommon for the discussion of schools or kid-friendly events becoming a topic. It is an active discussion, which is a deep reality for young families in northwest Detroit. Fortunately, we can influence the amount of kid-friendly events in North Rosedale Park. It is even a major concern of mine, even without having any kids of my own. The issue of schools, on the other hand, is not an area where we have a ton of influence. Yet. We are working on it though. As I write this, there are two events addressing the two major issues for young families. Best Classroom Project s northwest Detroit meet-up, hosted by neighbor Sarah Hulett, will have likely passed by the time you have read this. The other is North Rosedale Park s storied festival, June Day, which happens Saturday, June 14. Most of you reading this know June Day has been North Rosedale Park s landmark community event. As a kid, June Day ranked up there with Christmas and my birthday. From the parade to the calliope to all the midway games on the park grounds, June Day was magical. I think we can all be honest and say June Day has lost some of its luster for those who remember the event 20 years ago. A lot has changed. The number one difference today in my mind is the number of children living in the neighborhood. Now I believe that will change. New families with kids are moving into Grandmont-Rosedale on a regular basis. In the meantime, there is a definite need to diversify some of our programming to provide families with kids more to do locally. That is why supporting events like June Day is very important, regardless if you have children or not. The future of our region depends on it. 2 Next year will be the 85th anniversary of our storied festivalslash-carnival. Co-organizers, Julie Hacker and Tamara TK Kamara, have our current version down to a science, but they need more support to make it the event it deserves to be. This year, we need everyone to participate. Here are the best ways to do so: Volunteer to help with the event; we will need support pretty much all day Work with your block club to enter a float into the parade Consider contributing sponsorship funds, whether it be your or your employer Encourage your neighbors, extended family, and close friends to attend with you If you have questions on how to get involved, please contact me at President@NorthRosedalePark.org. I will be sure to make sure you get whatever information you need. Again, that s Saturday, June 14th. Julie and TK, along with Amy Good on the 5K run and Mary Davis in the kitchen, work miracles to produce a fun event. I am thankful that we have such great neighbors keeping our traditions alive. These ladies especially are tops in my book. Okay. If enough people read this and help, we can restore the luster to June Day. The key will be to maintain momentum into Let s think bigger. I m talking getting the mayor here, a neighborhood reunion, and possibly some carnival rides. Let s go! P.S. If you are interested in learning more about The Best Classroom Project, you can find them on Facebook. Just search Best Classroom Project. Tell Sarah I sent you and thank her for leading the charge. P.P.S Next month, I would like to see some feature stories or interviews of some of our fascinating neighbors. Could you suggest some neighbors? If yes, contact me at President@ NorthRosedalePark.org. The Rosedale Tattler

3 No doubt, you've heard of Alice in Wonderland. Well now she is coming through her living room mirror to celebrate with us. Joined by a panoply of fantastical characters, Alice will take us on a curious journey of delights. "The time has come," The Walrus said "To talk of many things: Of shoes - and ships - and sealing-wax - Of cabbages - and kings - And why the sea is boiling hot - And whether pigs have wings." Do you recall this bit of verse from your childhood? It is a small excerpt from the Lewis B. Carroll work: ALICE THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS. And it is the fall production of your own Park Players. The play is taken directly from the story, part prose, part rhyming poetry. The long list of characters can be cast with great flexibility. Many roles can be played by young or old(er), man or woman, boy or girl. You will notice some familiar characters in the list below. Behind the Footlights Alice in North Rosedale Park By Roger Loeb We start, of course, with Alice. She is joined by the Red and the White Queen, the Red and the White King, the Red and the White Knight (note a certain pattern? chess pieces), Tweedledee and Tweedledum, the March Hare, the Mad Hatter, Humpty Dumpty, the Walrus and the Carpenter, Pudding, Fawn, Gnat, Unicorn, Lion, Sheep, Beatle (bet you caught another pattern), Rose, Daisy, Larkspur, and Tiger Lily. The story can be enjoyed at many levels. The assorted humorous, charming, or curmudgeonly characters will captivate the youth. The remarkably clever and insightful puns and word-play will enchant the young at heart. Auditions will be held on Wednesday, September 3 at 7:00pm and Sunday, September 7 at 1:00pm. Many of the roles are only in one or two scenes and thus will not require attendance at all of the rehearsals. Always wanted a bit of whimsy in your life? Here it is beckoning you. Want to learn more about Alice Through the Looking Glass and Park Players? Come to our end of season picnic (just bring a dish to share) at 6:00pm on Sunday, June 8 at the North Rosedale Park Community House. And mark your calendar for performance dates: Nov. 14, 15, 16, 21, 22, and 23. I'll leave you with one more Alice snippet: "Well, now that we have seen each other," said the unicorn, "if you'll believe in me, I'll believe in you." On a warm summer morning in North Carthage, Missouri, it is Nick and Amy Dunne s fifth wedding anniversary. Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick s clever and beautiful wife disappears. Husband-of-the-Year Nick isn t doing himself any favors with cringe-worthy daydreams about the slope and shape of his wife s head, but passages from Amy's diary reveal the alpha-girl perfectionist could have put anyone dangerously on edge. Under mounting pressure from the police and the media as well as Amy s fiercely doting parents the town golden boy parades an endless series of lies, deceits, and inappropriate behavior. Nick is oddly evasive, and he s definitely bitter but is he really a killer? 5 Opening Day for Rosedale Grandmont Baseball And the parks are buzzing with the sound of baseball once again! Crack... you can hear the roar only it s not Tiger Baseball- it s Rosedale Little League with Baseball, T-Ball, Coach Pitch, and Soft-Ball, and our season is in full swing! We kicked off the beginning of the season with our Annual Opening Day festivities on April 26 with Parade & Music performed by Cass Techs Marching Band; plenty of Community support and our All You Can Eat Annual Pancake Fundraiser Breakfast sponsored by our own Rosedale Grays Sr. Baseball Team Coaches. What a fantastic day it was for every child and parent apart of this annual festival and the start of our Spring & Summer Baseball Season. You can continually follow and support the Rosedale Baseball Little League by coming out to our games on Saturdays and throughout the week once school ends, with games being held at the Stoepel Park Diamonds, South of Outer Drive & East of Evergreen. You can visit our website at: for team schedules and play dates and more pictures and videos of this past Opening Days festivities. We d also like to give a BIG shout out to the ardent efforts of our Rosedale Grandmont Sr. Grays Coaching Staff along with the Rosedale Grandmont Development Corporation s Staff for raising the funds necessary to bring about major park changes at Stoepel Park, such as the Walking Track, fencing and new & improved baseball diamonds, lighting and parking lot renovations, and even more improvements to come in partnership with the City of Detroit Parks & Recreation and In Kind Sponsors. Because of their persistence we will have a community park with baseball diamonds to continually be proud of for generations to come! Thank you very much! Go Rosedale! Thanks again, JoA Zuberi-Clark/Parent Volunteer Coordinator June 2014 Volume 89 5

6 How to recycle CFLs Recycling bins for used CFLs will be available soon at participating retailers. Check back for more information. To find other local recycling centers, go to com or contact your local municipal solid waste agency. HOW TO CLEAN UP A BROKEN CFL The EPA recommends the following steps for CFL clean-up and disposal. 1) If a CFL breaks in your home, open a window or door and have people and pets leave the room for at least 15 minutes. Also, shut off your central forced air furnace/ air conditioning system if you have one. 2) Scoop up the powder and glass fragments with something stiff such as two pieces of cardboard or index cards. Don t use a metal dustpan because the mercury will stick to it. 3) Put the broken fragments in a glass jar with a metal lid or in a sealed plastic bag. 4) Use the sticky side of duct tape to remove any fine particles. 5) Wipe the surface area with a damp disposable rag or paper towel. 6) Put all waste, duct tape, and cleanup materials into the jar or plastic bag along with the broken bulb pieces. 7) Wash your hands and face. 8) Place the jar or bag in an outdoors trash container or take it to a facility that accepts household hazardous waste. If the bulb breaks on carpeting and you need to vacuum, remove or empty the vacuum bag into a sealed plastic bag when you re finished. You can also get more information from ENERGY STAR on CFLs and what to do if your CFL bulb breaks. My First Year as a Cooke Elementary School Student This is only my first year here at Cooke School and I love it! I have really enjoyed Cooke very much because I have made many friends. It has made my educational experience even better than all the other schools in Detroit that I have attended. All of the teachers are nice and I get along with them quite well. I love it! I am coming back for fifth grade but not for sixth grade because I m moving back to Florida. When I grow up and become a doctor, I will owe it all to Cooke School. The Star of the Junior League of Detroit 2014 Designers' Show House By Maria Bryant North Rosedale Park resident Loretta Crenshaw studied design at Wayne State University and has been decorating homes for over 20 years. Previously a partner in a home décor/antique shop in Indian Village, Crenshaw and Associates has decorated numerous private homes in the Detroit Metropolitan area. This year's "Sophisticated Beauty" living room, is her third consecutive Junior League Show House endeavor. Ms. Crenshaw has lent her artistic touch to many historic neighborhood home tours including Indian Village, Boston Edison, Rosedale Park and Palmer woods. The Junior League of Detroit is a charity that supports Detroit area projects. In 2012 they gave $1000 scholarships to 100 Detroit Public school students. The Show House is their largest fundraiser. The May 2nd issue of the Detroit Free Press ran an article about Ms. Crenshaw and a picture of her sophisticated living room was featured on the front page of the "Homestyle" magazine. Both can be viewed online at detroitnews.com/homestyle. You may contact Ms. Crenshaw at crenshawdesigns.com and crenshawdesigns4you@yahoo.com. Congratulation Ms. Crenshaw for a job well done!
