2 Letter from President Hubert Sawyers III This past Valentine s Day marks the two-year anniversary of closing on our North Rosedale Park home. A lot has happened to my two-person-and-a-cat family in two years. We remodeled our kitchen. We connected with a bunch of young neighbors in Grandmont-Rosedale and formed a potluck group. I got laid off. I joined the NRPCA board. I reinstated my company and got a bunch of freelance work. Always Brewing Detroit opened. Eliza became block captain. We rescued a frightened kitten and an equally-frightened large dog [on different days], nursed puppies, and trap-neutered-released a fleet of feral neighborhood cats. Our potluck group got huge. Eliza got a new job. We experienced our first major home issue and fixed said issue. I got a new job. And on and on. Now I m president of our glorious civic association. Through it all, two things remain constant for us: 1. there is always a little more work to do tomorrow 2. and there are always good times to be had with neighbors I remind myself of this regularly. There are many neighborhood action items which need to be addressed weekly. While I am no stranger to Busy, it is still hard to imagine how I can get everything done. Regardless of how much gets done, I have to remember to enjoy myself. Or else, what is the point? The NRPCA board recently had its annual retreat at Always Brewing Detroit. It allowed us to really get to the heart of what we want to achieve this year. I am proud to share the leading goals for 2014: 500 NRPCA resident memberships 25% increase in block club formations Establishing formal partnerships with groups like youth sports, Girl Scouts, Zumba, et al This year will be focused on making connections. This means making sure neighbors are more familiar with those who live on their block. This can also means deeper relationships between the neighborhood and local businesses. Whatever it takes to build up the neighborhood culture in North Rosedale Park, this year s board is committed to doing it. I am excited to lead the initiatives necessary to bring more people into the fold. After all, that is what makes this neighborhood what it is. It is my hope that our efforts will inspire you to join our mission. There will be plenty of opportunities to get involved. Again, I want to hear from you. You may notice a change in my letter, which is due to feedback from my last one. Do you have any ideas on how we can achieve our goals this year? If so, please message me at President@ NorthRosedalePark.org and let me know. P.S. Our young neighbor potluck group is back in action. If you are under 40 years of age and live in the area, we welcome you to join us. me at the address above and I can get you details. P.P.S. You will notice on the last page the liaison for the various committees which support NRPCA. If any of them interest you, please contact the respective liaison and let them know. Know someone who s looking for a home? Invite them to the Grandmont Rosedale Neighborhood Open House! Now in its ninth consecutive year, the five neighborhoods of North Rosedale Park, Rosedale Park, Grandmont, Grandmont #1 and Minock Park are again inviting prospective homebuyers to tour homes for sale in our area. The Open House will run from 1:00 until 5:00 PM on Sunday, May 4 and will include homes currently being rehabilitated by our partner, the Grandmont Rosedale Development Corporation (GRDC). 9th Annual Neighborhood Open House Sunday, May 4, 2014 By Marsha Bruhn Registration will again be at the North Rosedale Park Community House where visitors can board a shuttle bus for a short tour of the neighborhoods, talk with vendors about tax abatement and financing, enjoy popcorn and refreshments, and find out about other services in our area. If you have a home for sale, consider including it in the Open House. If you know of a home near you that s for sale, contact the owner or realtor and encourage them to have it open. We had the largest turnout ever last year with well over 300 people attending this well-publicized and popular event that featured both rentals and homes for sale. Results were impressive. Of the 13 homes for sale, most received offers either prior to or during the Open House, and we ve welcomed new homeowners to our community. For more information, contact Mary Sue Schottenfels at To volunteer, call Kevin Johnson, The Rosedale Tattler

3 After enduring this terrible winter the past two months, N. Rosedale residents are finally in for a special treat that will bring a shot of sunshine into their lives. The Park Players spring musical, Guys and Dolls, is the ticket to a great evening of toe-tapping music with a funny storyline that will leave the audience with big smiles on their faces as they leave the Community House. This classic musical opens on March 21 with a Dinner Theater followed by seven more performances: March 22 (NRPCA Benefit); March 23, a luncheon matinee; March 29, a wine and cheese performance; March 30, another matinee with senior/ student discounted tickets; and also evening performances on March 28, April 11 & 12. Tickets can be reserved by calling Marcia Closson at Remember, the earlier you reserve your seats, the better seats you get. All seating is cabaret style at tables and chairs. Behind the Footlights By Sally Evalt The cast of over 20 people have been rehearsing three nights a week or more to prepare for another fabulous Players show. Director Jarrett Thomas, Musical Director Rich Alder and Choreographer Carollette Phillips make for one very creative team of dedicated professionals, and Players are so lucky to have them connected to this show. Co-Producers George and Sally Evalt are urging residents to leave the confines of their homes for just one evening to support and reward all those who have worked so hard on stage and backstage to entertain and delight their audiences. If you ve never been to a Park Players production before, this is the one to see! There is NOTHING like live theater! Also, if you d like to be a part of this production, volunteers are always needed to work in the lobby on show nights, either ushering or selling refreshments. Call the Evalts at to volunteer your help. Remember, Guys and Dolls opens March 21 for eight performances. Don t be the only one on the block to have missed it. Better yet, call your neighbors and friends and get a group together. You won t regret it! Bethanne McCall practices with Musical Director Rich Alder for the Players' spring production, Guys and Dolls. Kyle Sammy, center, takes center stage in the musical number, Sit Down You're Rocking the Boat, a song which is sure to rock the house, the Community House that is. 5 LET THERE BE LIGHT N. Rosedale Park to Get LED Street Lights by End of April By Kelsey Hartung North Rosedale Park and part of Rosedale Park will get new LED street lights under an accelerated program presented by Mayor Mike Duggan and the Public Lighting Authority of Detroit (PLA) in February at the Community House. Crews will finish installing lights on residential streets in April. Light installation on major thoroughfares will be completed in June. Mayor Duggan and PLA Executive Director Odis Jones said the new plan will upgrade the city s lighting system to national standards by installing Light Emitting Diode (LED) street lights and accelerate installation in the westside and eastside demonstration areas. The westside demonstration area is bounded by McNichols on the north, Southfield Road on the east, Fenkell on the south and the city limits on the west. The eastside boundaries are Eight Mile, Kelly Road, Hoover and Houston-Whittier. Once work in the demonstration areas is completed, crews will move to install lights in the remainder of the city. When work is completed in the demonstration areas, the PLA will take over responsibility of maintaining the lights in the area, and residents will report any damages, outages or issues with the lights to the Lighting Authority. Jones said the PLA has a goal of fixing any broken light within five days of it being reported. The lights being installed are more than twice as bright as the 70-watt high pressure sodium lights that have been the standard. The high pressure sodium lights installed in the initial phase of the demonstration project will be replaced with LED lights as part of a normal maintenance schedule, once the work in the rest of the city has been completed. In addition to providing a light at every street corner, the new plan requires a light in the middle of any block that is more than 300 feet long. Jones said neighborhoods like North Rosedale will have the option of maintaining decorative light poles. The City will pay $800 to install a standard light pole, however neighborhoods will have to pay an estimated $200 more to upgrade each light pole. In Detroit, there are 20,000 alley lights, with about 12,000 of them working. Nonworking alley lights will be removed and the 12,000 working lights will be left in place until they burn out. When alley lights burn out, residents will have the option of a replacement light from DTE at the cost of $100 for installation and $17 a month to operate it. Throughout the city, all neighborhood lights will be replaced by the end of All work on lights utilizing underground wiring, primarily along major thoroughfares, is scheduled to be completed in An engineering survey of the two demonstration areas completed last year showed that nearly half the lights in both areas are not working. The survey collected specific information about the condition of every single street light in both project areas. The survey work is now being continued in other parts of the city. To see the revised lighting plan, go to the Public Lighting Authority Web site at pladetroit.org. March 2014 Volume 89 5

6 Recently an informal group of Grandmont Rosedale residents met to form an ad hoc Traffic Calming Work Group to study ways to make our neighborhoods safer and cleaner through various traffic control measures known as traffic calming. Traffic calming is the most effective way to reduce speeding on residential streets, avoid traffic accidents, and prevent fatalities, according to the Institute of Transportation Engineers. Detroit s Palmer Woods neighborhood recently instituted some traffic calming measures and residents there are now very satisfied with those improvements. Grandmont Rosedale residents decided to explore how we might incorporate similar measures in our neighborhoods. Traffic Calming for Grandmont Rosedale This is an example of a chicane, a traffic calming design that slows traffic. Representatives from all five Grandmont Rosedale neighborhoods have begun to learn more about various ways to improve safety and reduce noise, pollution, littering and speeding in our area. The first step the work group is taking is sending out an interest survey to collect opinions from area residents about traffic, speeding, noise and pedestrian safety concerns. Watch your you ll be receiving the link to your neighborhood s survey. Please complete and reply to the survey ASAP, so that your input can be compiled. A paper copy of the survey will be at the Community House for those who do not have a computer. For more information on the Traffic Calming Work Group, contact Cheryl Buswell at cdbuswell@gmail.com or Susan Steigerwalt at spspnhp52@gmail. com. The Master Plan was developed as part of the Capital Campaign to raise funds to renovate the Community House and surrounding grounds and to provide increased programming. The plan was developed by Constantine George Pappas Architecture, the firm hired by NRPCA. Architect Gus Pappas also will provide design services for Phase One of the campaign. Other features of the plan for the Community House include: Moving the main entrance to off of the parking lot Converting the existing lobby, restrooms and office to meeting and multi-purpose rooms Expanding the building to provide corridor access to multi-purpose rooms Adding a concession stand and restroom near the kitchen for individuals using the park Upgrading basic wiring and installing wireless Internet connection For the grounds, the plan involves: Adding walking/jogging paths, concrete walks and a natural outdoor performance space Adding parking spaces near the playground and a turnaround near the end of the parking lot The Knight Foundation is preparing for the launch of year two of the Knight Arts Challenge! Campaign leaders believe it will take 2 or 3 phases to complete the entire What is the Capital Campaign? Master Plan. The addition will be completed during Phase One, with construction beginning as early as this fall. So far, $545,000 has been raised for the first phase. For more information on the Capital Campaign, to make a pledge or to become a volunteer, contact Marsha Bruhn at (313) or via at marshabruhn@yahoo.com. To see the campaign plan and the approved Master Plan, go to the NRPCA Web site at For nearly 75 years, the North Rosedale Community House and the sevenacre park surrounding it have been the focal point of our community. As with any building, time has taken its toll on the Community House. In order to address many of structural problems and the need to update the facility, the Capital Campaign was created. Funds raised will correct structural problems sinking floors, electrical and plumbing issues, and handicap accessibility and enhance activities by creating a new lobby, expanding the parking lot, installing additional lighting, and renovating the patio.
